Chapter 28: Echoes of Darkness
The morning sun broke through the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and gold. One Kick Man and Zephyr soared above the landscape, the tension of their battle with Obsidian Shade still lingering. The pendant around his neck felt heavier now, its energy simmering like a dormant volcano.
"Where to now?" One Kick Man asked aloud, half expecting the pendant to respond. It didn't.
Zephyr whinnied, banking slightly to the left, as if he knew the answer. Below, the dense forest gave way to an expansive plain, dotted with ancient ruins. In the center stood a towering obelisk, its surface covered in glowing, intricate runes.
"Guess that's our destination," One Kick Man said, patting Zephyr's neck. They descended toward the obelisk, landing softly amidst the ruins.
As One Kick Man approached, the runes on the obelisk flared to life, casting the area in an ethereal light. A low hum filled the air, resonating with the pendant. The runes shifted, forming words in a language One Kick Man couldn't understand—yet somehow, he felt their meaning.
"Seek the Guardian of Knowledge. The path forward lies within the Citadel of Echoes."
"The Citadel of Echoes?" One Kick Man repeated, frowning. "Sounds like a place where trouble brews."
Before he could ponder further, a soft rustling came from the ruins. Zephyr tensed, his ears swiveling toward the sound. One Kick Man turned, his senses sharpening.
From the shadows emerged a figure cloaked in tattered robes, their face obscured. They carried a staff adorned with glowing crystals, their presence exuding both wisdom and mystery.
"You wear the Pendant of Eternum," the figure said, their voice like a whisper carried by the wind. "It has been centuries since it chose a bearer."
"Yeah, about that," One Kick Man said, crossing his arms. "Why does everyone seem to know more about this thing than I do?"
The figure chuckled softly. "Because it is older than you can comprehend, a relic of creation itself. You must seek the Citadel of Echoes to unlock its true potential."
"And who are you?"
"I am but a guide," the figure replied, their voice tinged with sadness. "My purpose is to prepare you for the trials ahead."
The guide raised their staff, and the crystals flared with light. A swirling portal formed in the air, shimmering with colors that defied description.
"Through this portal lies the Citadel. But beware—the path is treacherous, and the Void's influence grows stronger with each step."
One Kick Man glanced at Zephyr, who pawed the ground, ready for the challenge. "Guess we don't have much of a choice," he said, stepping toward the portal.
As he crossed the threshold, a surge of energy enveloped him, and the world shifted. He found himself standing in a vast hall of mirrors, each reflecting not just his image but countless versions of himself—some heroic, others shadowed and twisted.
The air crackled with energy, and a disembodied voice echoed through the hall. "Face your fears, confront your past, and embrace your destiny."
Zephyr appeared at his side, his presence a comforting anchor in the surreal environment.
"Here we go again," One Kick Man muttered, stepping forward into the unknown.
To be continued...
