Chapter 101: Family 2
Annie was also present when Adam's father had thrown him out of the house all those years ago. She had seen how Adam had reacted at that time.
He was very scared. He was crying. He was begging his father for forgiveness. He was asking for just one more chance.
She remembered how he didn't want to be separated from his mother's old house no matter what his father made him do.
Now remembering that painful moment Annie looked at the new Adam who was standing there in front of her. And she felt really surprised.
Suddenly Adam stood up from the dining table. And he said "I'm going back to my room." And while he was leaving he added. "The one that has always been mine."
Annie was shocked and a little angry. Because that room was hers now. She had been living in it for years. But she also knew that Adam was talking about the fact that originally that room did indeed belong to him. And only later her stepfather Ricky had given it to her.
As Adam left the room Ricky clenched his fist and hit the table hard. The plates and glasses rattled from the impact. Rachel quickly calmed him down saying. "Dear don't worry too much about him. We won't have to keep him here forever."
Hearing this Annie's eyes widened. She wondered what her mother was planning now. She knew how controlling her mother could be. Whether it was with her or even with her stepfather Ricky. Her mother always got what she wanted.
Rachel smiled and added. "But what happened today proved one thing for sure. Adam still hates you. And that's actually good for us. Because if he stays angry with you then in the final part of our plan we won't face many problems at all."
Ricky looked shocked. He asked how that could be possible. Rachel replied. "We just need to speed things up a little. Tomorrow I will take Adam to meet Samantha."
Still angry Ricky stared at the food on his plate. He had lost his appetite. He said. "Do whatever you want. But just get this boy out of my house as soon as possible. I don't want him in this house for any longer than necessary."
Annie who was listening quietly to their entire conversation felt conflicted. She couldn't help but feel bad for Adam. Anyone would if they knew the difficult condition he had lived through all these years. But she was young. And she knew that if she spoke out against them both her mother and her stepfather would pressure her heavily. They would make her life difficult.
She remembered her real father. He had loved her dearly. It was something she could never say about Ricky. After all the very first thing she had seen from Ricky was how he had thrown out his own son from his own home just because he had remarried. For this specific reason Annie had never truly accepted Ricky as her father.
The scene shifts.
Adam entered his old room. And he was shocked to see that everything had changed. He had expected this of course.
But seeing it in person was still a jolt. But when he checked the old wooden closet he noticed that something was missing. A small framed image of his mother that he had taken a picture of with his old phone before he had left. Seeing that it was gone Adam smiled.
Just then the door to the room opened. Annie walked in. And she saw Adam standing there smiling to himself. She teased him. "Are you crazy? Why are you smiling all alone like that?"
Adam replied. "The last time I saw you you looked much older than you are now. The stress of living here must have been a lot for you."
Annie made a face and said. "Why are you talking like you are some kind of old man?"
They exchanged a few more words back and forth. And then Adam asked a more serious question. "Did you find anything of mine in this room when you moved in?"
Annie remembered that she had in fact found many of Adam's old things tucked away in a box in the back of the closet. But she quickly looked away from him and lied. "No I didn't find anything at all."
Adam was surprised by her quick and defensive response but he decided to let it go for now. He did not realize that she was hiding something important from him.
Annie then said. "You know that father doesn't like you being here right?"
Adam surprised looked at her. He replied. "You may be young but you know quite a lot about what goes on in this house."
She continued. "Do you also know that they are planning your marriage?"
Adam was startled for a moment. But then he smiled and said. "Of course I know that. That's the whole reason why I'm here."
Annie was very confused. If Adam already knew all of this then why did he come here? Why did he agree to their demands?
Adam then laid down on the bed as if he owned the place. Annie got very angry. She shouted. "That's my bed! Get off!"
Adam calmly said. "It's my bed as long as I'm staying here."
Furious Annie walked over to him and punched him right in the stomach. Adam fell to the floor in pain. He clutched his stomach. "You're crazy! I didn't think you'd actually hit me." He was genuinely surprised by her strength.
Annie yelled back at him. "Don't you know that you shouldn't touch a girl's things? This is my bed!"
Just then the door to the room opened again. Rachel came in. She saw Adam on the floor holding his stomach. And she saw Annie standing there with her fists still clenched. Rachel looked very angry at Annie.
Before Annie could say anything Adam quickly stood up. He hid his pain. And he said. "Oh we were just playing around. We are siblings after all right?"
Rachel's expression softened. She smiled. "Exactly. That is how siblings should be. Always playing together." She then warned Annie to behave properly with her older brother. And then she left the room.
Adam sighed in relief. Annie pushed him aside. And she warned him. "Don't you dare get back on this bed. Or I won't hold back next time."
Adam was shocked for a moment. Then he suddenly started to laugh. He told her. "I always wanted us to be like this. To be like real siblings." He was not joking.
He had always wanted a real family. A real connection. And in that small moment of chaos he had felt a spark of it.
Hearing this Annie was a little surprised. She looked at Adam and said "What do you mean you wanted to?"
Then Adam looked at Annie with a smile.
He said "I always wanted to have a good relationship with you. When your mother and you came home for the first time. When I was ready to move on from my... I thought that maybe if I had a little sister in my life then my life could be much better. I could forget my old sorrows." Saying this he started to remember the time when he had no one except his father.
His mother had left him. Annie was also looking at Adam.
She could understand. Then she started looking at the bed. She said "I also thought the same way." Hearing this Adam was a little surprised.
He looked at Annie. He said "What? I thought that you were very rude. And you didn't like to talk to anyone." Hearing this Annie immediately looked up.
She was looking at Adam very angrily. And she said "That's why I was not talking to you." Saying this she lay down on her bed and started to turn her face to the other side.
And she shouted and said "Just lie down on the floor somewhere here and sleep. Don't bother me." And saying this she started looking at the poster on the wall in anger.
She had not expected this reaction from Adam. She thought that he would not say such a thing. This was also a reason why she did not want to say such a thing.
She did not want to feel embarrassed in front of anyone.
Especially Adam. After saying this a lot of time passed. Many minutes passed. And Annie did not hear any movement behind her. Curious about this Annie turned back and looked.
She thought "Did Adam really go to sleep on the floor? Without clothes?" As soon as Annie turned back what she saw was very surprising. Because Adam was still sitting there. And he was looking at Annie. Then Annie immediately stood up. And she said "Why are you staring at me like that?" Adam smiled.
He said "I knew that you would definitely turn back and look. I was waiting for this very reaction of yours." Annie was very surprised. And she let out a deep breath.
And she stood up from her bed. Then Adam also stood up. He said "So are you ready to give me your bed?" Then Annie pointed her finger at Adam.
And she said "If you talk like this again I will break your face." After saying this she went to her closet. And from there she took out some blankets and threw them at Adam's face. And she said "Just lie down quietly." Saying this she lay down on the bed.
