Chapter 17: Hangout

After two more classes, the bell rang, signaling the end of the school day. The group packed their bags and made their way toward the school gate.

Gwen and Ben lingered behind while the others started walking ahead, knowing that only Ben had a bike.

"I'll stay here," Gwen said, "so I can talk to my dad when he gets here."

"Alright," Ben replied. "You talk to him, and I'll go grab my bike."

As Ben walked toward where his bike was parked, he glanced back at Gwen. Her father, Captain George Stacy, had just arrived. Ben could feel the tension already building in his chest. A police officer was still a police officer, no matter how casual the setting.

Ben rolled his bike up to where Gwen and her father were standing. Captain Stacy turned his attention to him, his sharp gaze making Ben feel like he was under interrogation.

"You must be Mr. Ben Tennyson," Captain Stacy said, his tone steady but authoritative. "I presume you're taking my daughter somewhere?"

Before Ben could answer, Gwen quickly interjected. "Dad…" she started, trying to ease the moment.

Ben swallowed hard, trying to keep his voice calm and respectful. "Yes, sir. Me and some friends are going out for pizza. It's just a quick outing."

Captain Stacy studied him for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, but I want her back home before 9. Can that be done?"

"Yes, sir," Ben replied quickly. "I'll make sure she's home on time."

"Good," Captain Stacy said, still eyeing him closely.

Before the conversation could get any more awkward, Gwen chimed in. "Okay, Dad, we're going now!"

Ben gestured to the bike, and Gwen hopped on behind him, adjusting her grip on his shoulders.

"Be safe," Captain Stacy called out as Ben started the engine.

With a deep breath, Ben revved the bike and zipped down the road, feeling Gwen's light grip tighten slightly as they took off.

As Ben and Gwen zipped through the streets toward the pizza shop, the wind rushing past them, Gwen leaned slightly forward and said, "Oh my gosh, Ben, what is this bike? I've never seen anything like it before!"

Ben smirked under his helmet. "Custom-built. Made it just for myself."

"Wow," Gwen said, her voice filled with awe. "And these glowing green lights? They look incredible."

"That's the electricity running through it," Ben explained. "I just added the color for the aesthetic."

"This runs on electricity?" Gwen asked, her tone rising in surprise.

"Yep," Ben said, casually maneuvering around a car.

"But... isn't that still in research stages for most companies?" Gwen said, her amazement clear.

"Well," Ben said with a chuckle, "they're not me."

Gwen laughed. "Man, you really are a genius. I think the only one as good as you has to be Tony Stark."

Ben's grin widened. "Well," he said, feigning modesty, "can't deny that."

Gwen shook her head, smiling as the green lights of the bike reflected in the passing windows. "You're something else, Ben."

"And don't you forget it," Ben replied playfully as they sped toward their destination, leaving a trail of green light behind them.

Ben and Gwen arrived at the pizza shop, parking the glowing bike outside. As they stepped in, Peter, Ned, and MJ were already waiting at a booth, waving them over.

"Finally!" Ned said as they approached. "We were starting to think you two ditched us."

Ben smirked. "Had to pass the dad test first. Gwen's dad doesn't take chances."

Gwen rolled her eyes playfully. "It's not that bad."

MJ raised an eyebrow. "George Stacy? The guy who scares grown men just by glaring at them? Yeah, I'm sure he's a teddy bear."

Everyone laughed as they settled into the booth. Peter, always curious, leaned toward Ben. "So, about your bike—how does it work? I've never seen anything like it."

Gwen chimed in. "I was just asking him the same thing. Turns out, he built it himself."

"Wait, what?" Ned said, his eyes widening. "You built that thing? Dude, you're like Tony Stark, but cooler because you're our age."

Ben grinned, enjoying the attention. "It's just something I've been tinkering with. Runs on electricity, but I added a green glow for style points."

MJ smirked. "And to make sure everyone stares at you on the road, right?"

"Can you blame me?" Ben said with a chuckle. "If you've got it, flaunt it."

Their pizzas arrived, and the group dug in, the conversation shifting to lighter topics.

"So, Gwen," MJ said, "how's it feel riding on that bike? Does it live up to the hype?"

"It's amazing," Gwen admitted. "I felt like I was in a movie or something. Though I'm not sure how comfortable my dad is about it."

Peter nodded thoughtfully. "He's a cop. Probably imagining every worst-case scenario."

"Exactly," Gwen said. "But Ben handled it pretty well."

Ben shrugged. "Just being my usual charming self."

Ned burst out laughing. "Charming? You mean terrified. I bet you were sweating bullets."

"Hey, I was cool under pressure," Ben protested, though he couldn't help but laugh along.

After finishing their meal, they moved to the dartboard, taking turns playing while cheering each other on.

"Okay, MJ," Ned said, handing her the darts, "your turn. But fair warning—Ben's secretly a pro at this. Don't let him hustle you."

MJ smirked. "Please. I've got this."

The evening was filled with friendly competition and laughter. By the time they checked the clock, it was already 8:30.

"Wow," Peter said, glancing at his phone. "Time flies when you're losing at darts."

"Speak for yourself," MJ teased, nudging him.

Gwen looked at Ben. "We should probably get going. Don't want to give my dad a reason to start interrogating you."

Ben nodded. "Yeah, let's head out." He turned to the group. "Catch you guys tomorrow?"

"Definitely," Ned said. "And Ben—next time, let me ride the bike."

"In your dreams," Ben replied with a grin as he and Gwen stepped outside.

Ben pulled up in front of Gwen's house, the green glow of his bike reflecting softly against the fence and porch. He turned off the engine, and the two of them stepped onto the quiet street.

"This was fun," Gwen said, brushing her hair back as she smiled at him.

"Yeah, we should do it again," Ben replied, leaning casually against his bike. "You're not too bad at darts, by the way. But you've got nothing on me."

Gwen laughed, rolling her eyes. "Keep telling yourself that, champ."

She turned to walk toward the door but stopped, looking back at Ben. "Thanks for tonight. And… thanks for dealing with my dad earlier. He can be a little overprotective."

Ben waved it off. "No big deal. He's just doing his job. Plus, he's got good reason to be protective—you're pretty awesome."

A faint blush crept across Gwen's cheeks, but she quickly masked it with a playful smile. "Careful, Ben. You're starting to sound like a charmer."

"Starting to?" Ben grinned. "I've been charming since day one."

Gwen shook her head, laughing softly. "Goodnight, Ben."

"Goodnight, Gwen," he replied, watching her head inside before starting up his bike.

As Ben zipped off into the night, leaving a trail of green light in his wake, Gwen's father, George Stacy, stood at the window, arms crossed. He had been watching the exchange silently, his sharp eyes taking in every detail.
