Chapter 68: Dismemberment
Vaclenio loosed three arrows in rapid succession, travelling rapidly towards Raphael.
They moved like a blur, and the blue energy hummed as it whipped through the air, but Raphael was prepared.
He ducked under the first one and sliced his white blade through the other two, causing them to dissipate into the air.
The crowd were already roaring with cheers at the display of skill, but Raphael had hardly shown them anything yet.
As he tried to close the distance between him and his opponent, Vaclenio continued to summon and shoot more arrows, trying his best to give Raphael no chance to breathe.
At first, Raphael dodged, but as an arrow sliced past his leg and spilt blood, he decided to keep using his sword to be defensive.
The crowd grew even louder.
"Get him Vaclenio! Get him for all the women he's stolen!"
"He's made the Son of the Dragons bleed! He's not as invincible as we thought!"
"It's over. Raphael's met his match!"
The cheers couldn't be heard by Raphael, as his mind was focused entirely on avoiding arrows.
Then suddenly, the pattern that the arrows came in changed.
Instead of firing arrow after arrow, Vaclenio began to pause and feint, making his attacks more rigid and unpredictable.
Raphael had to admit that it threw him off balance for a few moments, but it was still hardly anything he couldn't handle.
He slowly trudged forward through the onslaughts of attacks, slicing arrows away with only one sword.
It was only when Vaclenio brought out a new strike that he believed he might have to switch his tactics.
Rather than drawing just a simple line in the air to use as an arrow, the man drew one of a much greater size.
He then used an ability that increased the size of the bow, turning it from regular to a Greatbow that only the mightiest of men would be able to draw and release.
Vaclenio's lips twisted into a wicked smile as he knelt down on one knee to brace himself.
"Let's see you swat this strike away, Raphael Brooks!"
The man pulled back the large arrow and let it loose. The strike carried so much force that space seemed to ripple in its wake.
Straight away, Raphael knew that his usual tactics would not work. Rachael's blade would not be enough.
The next actions took place in only a few moments.
Raphael quickly called upon Violetta, The Red Dragon, using a power that he was hardly used to.
The Red Flaming Armour.
However, he did not want the armour to cover him completely. Instead, it simply summoned a gauntlet around his free hands. Still, the flaming armour piece granted him tremendous strength.
As the large blue arrow came flying towards him, Raphael braced himself and outstretched his arm, preparing for the force.
The arrow crashed into his gauntlet, the two forces sending a shockwave of energy through the crowds, blowing up skirts and sending people tumbling backwards.
But Raphael succeeded.
The momentum sent him sliding backwards in the grass, but he managed to remain on his feet with the large blue bolt caught in his gauntletted hands.
As he crushed it in his fists, Vaclenio looked at him with utter disbelief.
Raphael stalked towards him, now with the power of two dragons activated, but his opponent was not done yet either.
His bow disappeared into the air, but instead, he used his Birthright to draw two blue daggers.
They were gruesomely shaped and equipped with both an impossible sharp tip and point.
Raphael wondered if he should call upon Violetta to further cover himself in the entirety of the red flaming armour, but he didn't want to risk it.
Instead, he headed forward.
Vaclenio copied, now jogging towards the approaching Raphael.
The crowd gazed with anticipation. It was clear to all who were watching that this would be the deciding exchange. Even the queens stood there with beating hearts, desperate to witness the outcome of the battle.
The two men entered range, and everything seemed to slow down for Raphael.
He saw Vaclenio's moves clearly, as the man thrust both daggers outwards, aimed towards Raphael's neck.
The man intended to deliver a killing blow, and that was a decision that he would soon come to regret.
Raphael dropped into a crouch, allowing the two daggers to pass over his head.
As he watched them woosh by, he grabbed hold of Vaclenio's wrist with his gauntleted hand and yanked on it hard. He heard the man's shoulder pop, which made him scream in agony.
Something had popped out of place, but Raphael was not done.
With the arm still being pulled by his gauntlet, he used his other hand to bring the blade upwards with force.
As the white sword reached the arm, it didn't meet any resistance. It simply tore through flesh, leaving behind only a stump at the man's elbow.
It took a few moments for Vaclenio to notice what had happened. But as the blood sprayed from the wound, it became clear to him.
"AHHHHH!" The man screamed, instantly dropping to his knees.
Rather than cheering for the battle conclusion, the whole crowd grew silent and terrified. They had just witnessed a student lose his dominant arm.
As the man rolled around on the grass, clasping at the spraying wound, the queens moved around frantically.
The Crown Queen asked Cecilia to use her healing abilities to close the wound, which she did.
Harmony and Maria simply looked away from the sight, faces neutral as though they had expected such an outcome.
The cloud queen, Rosalind, stared at the wound with fascination. Something that hardly matched her personality.
Raphael laid eyes on the Crown Queen, who was now watching Cecilia heal her white knight.
At first, her face was worried, but after a while, it seemed as though it was washed away.
The woman looked at Raphael, surprisingly there was no anger on her face.
"Perhaps I was wrong about you." She said to the man who just cut off the arm of her number one knight. "Maybe you are actually the strongest student of the five schools."
Raphael looked at her, shocked at her praise. But before he could relish in it, a student's voice shouted in the crowds.
The words drew everyone's attention from the dismembered arm.
"Enemies! Our scouts have spotted enemies approaching our school, and they number in the hundreds!"
Raphael knew instantly who they were.
