Chapter 47
First, they asked me to write my name, so I wrote “Miro” on the cap.
“Is that your real name…?”
I was about to write the composer’s name, but I realized that I always referred to him as ‘Composer’, and I couldn’t recall his actual name.
“I’m Kang Woo-hyeon.”
“Oh, yes…”
Following the composer’s—no, Kang Woo-hyeon’s—request, I signed the cap for him.
“Thank you,” he said, carefully placing the cap on the table.
“Do you usually collect such things?”
His behavior seemed so natural that I asked, and he scratched his head a bit shyly as he nodded.
“Did you notice? Actually, I collect signatures from the singers I work with and decorate my house with them.”
“Then should I get Hyeon-su’s signature too?”
“Are you talking about Slim Gold? Haha, you really don’t need to go through that trouble.”
“Oh… Is Hyeon-su not at that level yet?”
“How could you say something like that? I’ll ask for it directly if we end up working together later.”
“Ahaha… Actually, I’m going to Hyeon-su’s workshop today, so I was asking.”
“You’re going today?”
“Yes, I’ve hit a wall while practicing the guitar.”
I felt stuck at about 80% while working on a song. Plus, since I left my guitar back at my family home, I thought it’d be a good idea to go to Hyeon-su’s workshop and borrow a guitar to practice.
Hearing that I was practicing guitar, the composer’s eyes sparkled.
“You play the guitar?”
“Oh yes, I’m just starting to practice…”
“I’ll give you the guitar version of the sheet music, so could you try practicing it when you have time?”
“Really?”
“A singer-songwriter who performs their own songs on guitar always shines.”
With a somewhat lively expression, he got up and brought over the guitar sheet music for the new song we were working on together.
“Oh, there’s sheet music for guitar?”
“Actually, I hesitated to offer it at first because I didn’t want to push you too hard. But this is quite coincidental.”
Coincidental…? It didn’t seem like a coincidence to me…
“Uh… This looks a bit difficult?”
The sheet music looked complicated just by glancing at it.
“It’s a bit complex because I arranged it for guitar, but practicing it won’t be a loss.”
That’s true… It’s always good to get better at something, right? Besides, being able to play my own song on guitar is a big deal…
“Well, I’m not saying you have to play it right now; you can take your time to practice when you have a chance.”
With that much encouragement, it would be hard to refuse outright.
“Okay, well… I understand for now.”
“You made a wise decision.”
I could just try it out later when I have some free time, right? Not that practicing the guitar had any direct use…
Since I was already going to practice anyway and now I wouldn’t have to worry about picking a song, I decided to think positively.
After chatting a bit more about the new song, I left the composer’s workshop and took the subway to Hyeon-su’s workshop.
It wasn’t too far, so I arrived quickly…
“What’s going on?”
In front of Hyeon-su’s workshop, a lot of people were standing around with various equipment.
I sent a quick text to Ah-young to see if something was up and as I approached, a young man in a cap walked towards me.
“Uh… Is there a problem?”
He walked over clumsily and after seeing me for a moment, he asked politely what I needed.
“This is a friend’s workshop. Is something happening here?”
“Um… Just a moment.”
Since he was so polite, it was easy to speak, so I said that. The young man looked around for a moment before walking back to where the group was gathered and returned with a middle-aged man.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Producer Ahn Young-wook.”
Wait… a producer?
Hearing that he was a producer, I remembered a text I had received from Hyeon-su before.
“Were they filming a variety show?”
Was that variety show not something that was filmed at a broadcasting station but rather an observational kind of variety show?
“May I ask your name?”
This producer was oddly polite.
Aren’t producers supposed to be a bit charismatic and authoritative?
“Uh… I’m Kim Soo-hyun.”
I responded to his respectful inquiry, but something felt off about the situation.
“I see, you’re a friend of Slim Gold…”
“Yes, that’s correct…”
I just came to learn a bit about the guitar, but perhaps the timing was off?
If I had known it would be like this, I should have contacted them in advance.
“Um… If you’re filming, I’ll head back.”
“Oh, no, no! You can go in comfortably. As you can see, it’s an observational variety show. A friend is quite welcome!”
When I suggested I might leave, the producer waved his hands a bit too enthusiastically as if to stop me.
“Oh… It would be a bit inconvenient for me to be on camera.”
“Are you a trainee? If it’s a trouble, we can edit it out.”
“No, it’s not that… I’m just an ordinary person, but since I’m here anyway, I think I’ll just head back.”
I didn’t feel like coming here to learn while they were filming.
But the producer flailed his arms dramatically, looking troubled.
“We want to film Slim Gold’s natural daily life, so we won’t stop a friend from coming. We can’t, actually. We’ll just edit it in the broadcast to show that a friend came by, so it’s not a bother at all.”
“R-Really?”
“Yes, it won’t inconvenience us at all, so don’t worry.”
Uh… That made sense, but why was he being so desperate?
If I went home, they wouldn’t need to edit anything, making it easier for everyone, right?
“Or how about wearing a cap or something to cover your face?”
At that moment, the producer pulled down his own cap to demonstrate.
“Like this, only your mouth and nose would show up on camera.”
Hmm… That seems okay…
As I was seriously contemplating whether to leave or stay, someone familiar came out from outside.
“A friend of mine is here… uh… sister?”
It had been a while since I saw Hyeon-su, and he looked a bit different from before.
His hairstyle had changed from a dull, bleached look to something more voluminous and flashy, and it looked like he had makeup on.
Is that the taste of success?
“What brings you here?”
“Um…”
“Oh! Let’s go inside and talk!”
As I was trying to greet Hyeon-su, the producer quickly led him and me toward the inside of the workshop.
Although I was caught off guard and stepped into the workshop this way, it wasn’t bad.
After all, I intended to come, so if it wouldn’t interfere with the filming, then why not…
“Now, you two can talk comfortably inside.”
The producer, having guided us in, slipped away among the staff. I smirked a little, but he wasn’t being too annoying.
Since I’m here, I might as well learn something.
“Do you have a cap?”
“Uh? Yes, there is one over there…”
Hyeon-su pointed to a coat rack where a simple black cap was hanging.
“But that’s the one I wore yesterday.”
“It looks fine.”
Is that a big deal?
I had just taken off the cap I was wearing to get it signed for someone else.
“You’re not wearing it now, right?”
“Right, just came back from the shop.”
“Shop?”
So, the hair and makeup were powered by funds…
“The producer told me to dress up as much as possible.”
That statement made me chuckle.
Didn’t they say they were filming natural lives?
Seeing the producer’s contradictory actions, I started to understand his mindset.
Could it be that he considered me somewhat charismatic?
Perhaps they wanted to capture this image on camera to boost viewer ratings.
I read in a book that producers are demons obsessed with ratings.
“Then, I’ll borrow it for a bit.”
Saying that, I quickly snatched the cap from the coat rack and placed it on my head.
Fortunately, it was a loose fit; if I pressed it down, it would cover half my face.
“But what brings you here today?”
As I completely pulled the cap over my head, Hyeon-su, who was glancing at the camera, started speaking.
I hadn’t even noticed until now how obvious the camera presence was.
“I came to learn a bit from Ah-young, but the timing didn’t work out.”
“Guitar, right? Ah, you mentioned you were going to learn.”
“Yeah, I can play to a certain extent now, but I’ve hit a wall.”
“Though, you didn’t bring a guitar with you?”
“The guitar? Over there.”
I raised my hand to point at a fancy guitar resting in a corner.
“Is that Hyuk’s guitar?”
“Yep, I got permission last time.”
During our last drinking session, I had ensured that I could come over anytime and use it.
Of course, it was a bit coerced by Ah-young while we were drunk.
“But what about the others?”
“They went out for something and should be back soon.”
I recalled meeting the band members at the last get-together.
Ah-young on drums.
Hyuk on guitar.
Min-cheol on bass, and perhaps Yong-jun on keyboards?
I couldn’t remember their last names, but their first names should be right.
Thus, for now, I picked up Hyuk’s guitar. The weight was definitely different.
It was much fancier, and seemed lighter; perhaps the materials were different?
“But are you going to learn guitar from Ah-young? She’s a drum major.”
“Still, she plays better than me.”
“Why not learn guitar from Hyuk then?”
Nervous about the presence of cameras, Hyeon-su was asking a bit more than usual, but I shook my head.
“Hyeon-su, that would just trouble him.”
“What do you mean?”
“If a guy like Hyuk starts teaching a girl that looks like me, most guys will just struggle with their feelings.”
Hyeon-su’s face twisted oddly at my bold statement, but I ignored it and continued.
“Hyeon-su, you need to keep your wits about you. Falling for this sister would lead nowhere~”
Even now, there are thousands of fans just waiting for Miro to notice them, right?
“Ah… right.”
“I’m not thinking about dating, so I’m trying not to give anyone any chance.”
“Is that so?”
Hyeon-su is fine.
Because he is the type who just chases after music and hardly notices anything else around him.
Plus, he’s still a minor, right? Only a two-year difference, but still.
As I looked at Hyeon-su with furrowed eyebrows, I lightly strummed Hyuk’s guitar.
“Oh…”
Since it was expensive, it felt completely different from the one I usually used.
“But what song are you practicing?”
“Um… want to hear it?”
It’s a song from a famous Japanese band; maybe he wouldn’t even know it. It’s somewhat similar to Hyeon-su’s music style too.
“Alright, watch closely, and… don’t tell anyone…!”
“…Why not?”
“I don’t want you to ask me to do Guitar Hero or something~”
“…Is that a line from some anime?”
“This is what today’s youth has come to…”
A new generation that doesn’t even know that line has arrived.
This is what kids today are like…
“But we aren’t that far apart in age, are we?”
“Young! Don’t talk back to your elders!”
Just as I was trying to play the guitar properly in front of the even more unromantic youth.
Clunk-!
“We’re here!”
As the workshop door swung open, Ah-young and the other band members made their entrance.
“Huh? What are you doing here?”
Waving a white plastic bag with one hand, Ah-young was surprised to find me strumming the guitar, her eyes wide open.
