Chapter Eight: First Task II
Atlas collapsed to his knees as the cloud far above began to write and fill with awesome power. There was a loud rushing of air and the sky turned cloudy. The cloud was rectangular, and there seemed to be a magical boundary at the edge of the field that the cloud could not cross. Atlas checked his "watch" and noted that it was 11:58. Two more minutes until he would see if his plan worked or not. In this world there were a total of 30 hours in a day, so 3 more hours were added after 12, with 15, taking 12's place at noon.
As Atlas struggled to breath due to his mana being in the single digits. As time ticked by his mana started to surge upwards, and just when his mana reached 500 units, the sky broke open and rain exploded from it as blood would from a wounded man. As the first droplet of water hit the field, the plants started to grow upwards in real time, as though they could sense the water and wanted to taste it. The water drained from the sky, and Atlas watched with bated breath as the water continued to ceaselessly pound the ground.
"What in the name of the Great System did you do!?!" A now very wet farmer screamed, startling Atlas out of his review. "I said to water the plants, not drown them by summoning a freaking RAINCLOUD."
Atlas blinked slowly before tilting his head and smirking slightly. "Don't rain water plants?" He asked smugly, inwardly gloating to himself. He liked seeing this man absolutely flabbergasted.
"You! Urgh." The farmer mumbled, watching as the rain continued to descend. "How long will this rain last?" He asked Atlas.
Atlas shrugged. "It should last until the 13th hour, but it could last forever. I just cast the spell, I have no idea how long it will end up staying for." He replied, completely honest with the man.
He frowned. "An hour you say? No spell can last forever, no matter who the caster is, but it can last for a System cursed long time."
They continued to watch the rain silently until three more farmers came running over from deeper in the fields. They were all wearing straw hats and were utterly drenched. The farmer looked expectantly over at them.
"The field," the one on the far left gasped out. "It's growing!"
Atlas looked quizzically at him. "Isn't that what a field of crops is supposed to do?"
The one in the middle shook his head. "No, not like that. The field is visibly growing! And when I used Plant Check on it, in the list showing all the current effects, it said magical water!" he exclaimed, as though that would mean anything at all. The original farmer's eyes grew wide and he ran over to the field, presumably to check for himself.
After a few seconds he came running back, quite a bit more wet than when he left. "It's true." he breathed, staring at Atlas with a mixture of shock, awe and confusion. "How…" he trailed off.
"How did I create this beauty? Great question, to be completely honest, I gambled and used a bunch of different skills to try and create this effect, the chances were low, but I tried it anyway." Atlas said, scratching the back of his head ruefully.
The farmer's eyes narrowed and the lead farmer spoke. "Then you are very lucky it seemed to have worked out, otherwise you would have had to pay 50 gold to pay for all the damages."
Atlas grinned sheepishly and looked up at the cloudy sky. "So do I get my pay now or…"
The farmer shook his head. "We are gonna politely request you stay here until we have confirmed it did the job. If it did, you get full pay, and you walk away a happy man, if it didn't… we will just talk about that only if it happens, if you get my meaning." He said, glaring at Atlas once again. He must really like glaring at people. Atlas thought dryly to himself.
They waited together, sitting on the cool grass and talking about whatever came across their minds. Somewhere during the conversation Atlas got interested in what their levels were and glanced at their levels.

Water Farmer

Earth Farmer

Wind Farmer

The farmer Atlas had talked to the most was the wind farmer, and the water farmer was the one who had told them about the water having magical properties to the plants.
After a long time, Atlas glanced at his "watch" and saw it was finally the moment of truth. 12:59.
They all watched the rain with bated breath.
The time turned to 13:00, and they stared at the sky. Almost instantly it lessened, turning from a harsh downpour, to normal rain, to a light sprinkling in under a minute. There were a few final drops that fell and then the field became quiet. The clouds remained, looming over them in the sky far above. Atlas checked the time. 13:03. It had taken only three minutes for it to go from constant rain to absolutely nothing.
One of the earth farmers went closer to the field, walking among the plants and checking them, eyes glowing a greenish hue. Atlas assumed he was checking them with Plant Check and waited for the final verdict.
"I can't believe it!" The farmer finally exclaimed, clasping his hands behind his head in astonishment. The plants are all perfectly watered, and they all have the Magical Growth (Water) buff that Nartin was talking about. Atlas smiled to himself, and he turned to look at the wind farmer who was staring at the cloud far above. "How's that for an hour's worth!" he said, grinning widely.

The man glanced at him before looking back up. "Say, how long do you think that cloud will last?" Atlas thought about it for a second before saying, "I don't know the maximum amount it could stay for, but I feel like it will stay there for at least a week, but don't quote me on that, as I don't know for certain."
The man nodded. "I think that is a fair estimate, though I think the maximum is going to be about a year by my reckoning."
Atlas nodded along, not knowing if the man was just guessing or going off of a skill or gut feeling. "So how much are you going to pay me?"
The man smiled widely. "I can safely say that you earned all of your pay, and I would even go so far as to say we will pay you 50 silver for every day that our crops are watered by that rain, whether you come and check in on in or not. As long as you hang on to the quest, you will gain 50 silvers every day at about 13:10, let's say, just so we can make certain that the cloud stopped spewing rain."
Atlas nodded, spinning on his heels and activating his next quest. It was time to go kill some monsters.
Atlas started to use Mind Step and was teleporting thousands of feet with every step when he realized his notifications were subtly blinking at him. He wondered how he hadn't noticed this before and opened them up, curious as to the reason.

Skill Gained! Weather Manipulation (SSS): You can control the weather by controlling the ambient mana (Skill requires Absolute Mana Monarchy to function properly) and giving it shape. Current weathers you can create: Clear, Humid, Dry, Hot, Cold, Cloudy, Rainy, and Stormy. It takes 10 minutes of concentration to change the weather. (No mana needed other than ambient mana.)
Skill Gained! Mana Theatrics (S): When using mana in any way, the mana will try its utmost to make you look as cool and mage-ly as it possibly can. This has no effect on your spells, it just looks cool.
You have leveled up your skill Mind Step (Z) to level 1!
Atlas was pleased with the weather skill, but he was uncertain how to react to the second. Looking cool was never bad, but he didn't really see the point of such a skill, maybe it would prove useful once it had leveled up enough.
Atlas sighed and opened his status screen, mentally preparing himself for the hot mess that he was sure to find.

Atlas just sighed. It was every bit as bad as he thought it would be. Shrugging it off, he stepped into the forest.

Atlas stepped back out of the forest heading back in the direction of town. He was a little disappointed. When the task had said monsters he had been expecting something out of a novel, but all he had managed to find were some rabid wolves and the normal wildlife. As he had traveled through the forest, he had livened things up, using Elemental Mastery to help out the dying forest. He had killed everything that attacked him, and after almost 5 hours of non-stop killing, he had decided to call it a day.
The highest tier animal he had fought had been tier 4, but it had been on its last legs and wasn't much of a fight. He had lost count of how many monsters he had killed; it was probably somewhere in the thousands. After each kill he had merely disintegrated the corpse before moving on.
He began teleporting and eventually reached town again, teleporting inside, he made his way over to the guards office and noticed a line of people going inside. Stepping in line he waited his turn until it was his turn to head in.
The guard held out a metal rod and tapped it against Atlas's wrist. Looking briefly surprised he said, "Your total payout is 3 gold 32 silver, have a good day." He said waving Atlas out. Atlas frowned, surprised at the lack of reaction, but he realized that what he could do in a day was nothing compared to those in higher tiers, so any reaction at all was good.
He headed back to the barracks, tired after a very long day of work. At least I'm 3 gold and 82 silver richer. He thought happily to himself.
