Chapter 221: The man before me, he understands me! (Happy Lantern Festival, everyone) _2
If the victim hadn't been a somewhat famous lawyer, the murderer, Xiami, wouldn't have qualified to be dubbed the "Axe Murderer."
This was merely a tactic by the police to placate the wealthy: "Look, the murderer is so brutal, known as the Axe Murderer, yet we captured him immediately! So you don't need to think we wasted taxpayers' money! All this was worth it!"
Speaking of this, Fanny couldn't help laughing. "At the time, the police's publicity was quite effective; we even received verbal commendation from the Queen. Those of us involved also reaped many benefits, which is why Nico is annoyed by your arrival."
"So, you didn't really put your heart into investigating the scene?" Dean asked, speechless.
Fanny exhaled a puff of smoke and chuckled lightly. "At least everything was in accordance with procedure!"
Alright then, Dean thought. So that's why these people were completely oblivious, even though the case clearly concealed a second criminal. It wasn't that they were unprofessional; it was simply human nature.
While they were speaking, pretty boy Nico returned to the hall, pushing a trolley.
Seeing his colleague Fanny talking with Dean, a flash of anger crossed Nico's eyes, and he said coldly, "Mr. Dean, I've brought everything. To ensure the evidence remains uncontaminated, you'll need to go to a special room to re-examine it!"
"Lead the way!" Dean said indifferently.
Nico snorted and said to Fanny, "Fanny, this stuff is heavy. Can you help me push it?"
Fanny glanced apologetically at Dean, then turned her back to him. As she bent over to help push the trolley, her figure curved attractively.
「On the way to the new location.」
Carol, who had been quietly observing, approached Dean and flashed an unnatural, twisted smile. "I'm sure that vixen, Fanny, has her estrogen levels through the roof right now. She's been sending you sexual hints the entire way."
"In nature, females are always proactive when faced with a quality male."
Dean wasn't surprised. If he were to parade his 'assets' around London, enough women would want to sleep with him to fill the Thames. He certainly wouldn't let someone like Fanny, with her messy private life, take advantage of him. Without a great deal of male attention and 'cultivation,' an ordinary woman couldn't develop the kind of aura Fanny possessed.
Carol scoffed. This man is truly narcissistic.
"Honestly, I still don't understand how you can maintain your composure and carry on lengthy conversations with these... monkeys, who seem like they haven't fully evolved," she muttered.
Dean just smiled and stayed silent.
He didn't like that lofty sense of solitude. He preferred the thrill of seeing through everything, saying nothing, waiting to be provoked, and then suddenly baring his fangs to crush his opponents and put them in their place. In plain terms... he liked to show off.
「In the special room.」
Dean and the others put on lab coats, gloves, and shoe covers, and began to unseal the evidence on the trolley.
Dean undertook this step himself, handling everything personally.
There wasn't a lot of evidence: dozens of close-up photos of the crime scene, four or five bloodstained garments, an axe still bearing dark brown bloodstains and dried flesh, and some genetic material extracted from the victims' bodies.
Nico's earlier display of exhaustion was simply because he didn't want Dean near Fanny, who usually occupied much of his attention. Dean couldn't muster any further interest in such a hormone-driven individual who lacked any subtlety.
He first spread out the photos one by one on a large platform in the room.
The photos were all numbered, and based on these numbers, one could roughly reconstruct the layout of the crime scene in their mind.
The content of the photos primarily included the mansion's living room and the hallway leading to the underground parking garage.
The lady of the house had been brutally murdered in the living room.
Because of this, the victim's neighbor had happened to see the murderer, Xiami, cleaning up the body and called the police, leading to the swift resolution of this home invasion murder case.
And at the junction between the living room and the hallway, there were long, bloody drag marks.
At the end of these marks lay the man of the house, his hands and feet bound, ultimately strangled to death.
His body was covered in blood. His eyes, wide with helplessness and anger, stared from his position leaning against the wall. His already cloudy gaze was fixed intently on the camera, a sight that assaulted the psyche of anyone who viewed the photos.
Based on the photos, Dean swiftly reconstructed the crime scene in his mind:
The murderer's first act likely occurred in the living room. After binding the homeowners, the perpetrator assaulted the wife in front of her husband. He then brutally killed her with an axe before dragging the husband to the hallway. There, the murderer struck the husband twice with the axe before switching to a rope and strangling him to death.
Dean inferred the perpetrator had first struck the husband twice with the axe before finally killing him. This was due to two bloodstains on the man's chest; their pattern, resembling a gushing spring, indicated staining caused by blood surging violently from the body. If not for the clothing, the blood from these two wounds might have even spattered directly onto the opposite wall.
After viewing the photos, Dean tapped the table and looked at Nico, who was standing aside, watching coldly. "Looking at these photos," Dean asked, "didn't you have the slightest doubt at the time?"
This was someone else's territory, after all.
