Chapter 618: Hostage Crisis (Part 2)

Whether it's making movies or engineering construction, including mining and other businesses, the use of explosives is very extensive. This time it's ammonium nitrate explosives, which are even more widely used. Apart from casting a wide net, there's no way to identify suspects.

During the investigation, Jimmy received a new task again. A suspect, pursued for speeding by NYPD patrol officers, had a blowout after his car's wheel hit the curb while turning. After driving for a while, the suspect got out, escaped into a street-side restaurant, and held two kitchen chefs hostage.

The suspect is now surrounded by NYPD patrol officers. The ESU team has been dispatched to the scene because the back door is blocked, and the suspect is still in the kitchen, unable to escape.

Listening to Ruiz's case report over the phone, Jimmy was at a loss, "Is it really necessary for us to get involved in this case? Since the ESU team has already been dispatched, it's just one suspect; they can handle it."

Ruiz: "They want you there to oversee their actions and avoid causing more chaos. The scene is already locked down."

Jimmy: "Alright, I'll go by myself then. Mark and Julia are still investigating the explosion case's related information."

Ruiz: "Yes, no problem."

Jimmy said a word to Mark and Julia, organized his gear, and left the office, driving his allocated vehicle with lights and sirens blaring all the way north, quickly reaching the Bronx District.

Upon arriving at the scene, Jimmy came over with his FBI badge, found a sergeant already at the scene, "FBI Senior Agent Jimmy Yang, how's the situation now?"

Sergeant and Jimmy shook hands: "Harper Sullivan. We've identified the suspect's identity, Ethan Mitchell, a local from the Bronx, with multiple incarceration experiences, gang member; he was previously with the Black Diamond Gang."

Jimmy: "What's going on? Previously, I heard he was only stopped for speeding? How did it escalate to a hostage situation?"

Sergeant Sullivan shook his head with a wry smile: "Initially, it was just a simple speeding. After his blowout, he fled a block but couldn't escape and eventually entered this restaurant. We've investigated his car and found a large packet of drugs, an electronic scale, some cash, and small plastic bags. You understand, right? The drugs conservatively estimated to be about a kilogram."

Jimmy: "Fuck! What's wrong with him? Why carry so much?"

This is just a lack of clear thinking. Drug trafficking, even if substantial in quantity, if caught, might only mean a few decades in prison. Now taking hostages could mean facing several decades of imprisonment, and if the hostages die, it could be a minimum of thirty years, with a maximum of life.

Jimmy shook his head and walked towards the restaurant for a glance, then suddenly stopped, turned to look at Sergeant Sullivan, "You said he is a gang member, right? Black Diamond Gang? What's his rank within the gang?"

Sergeant Sullivan: "He was considered middle management. The Black Diamond Gang was busted for smuggling by you guys; don't you know that?"

Jimmy: "I'm aware of that; you're saying this guy was a key member? Why wasn't he caught previously?"

Sergeant Sullivan: "That's unclear."

Jimmy nodded: "I'll make a call."

Jimmy took out his phone, about to call Ruiz, then suddenly halted his finger on the phone, wondering why. Such incidents occur every year, and FBI involvement is rare. Why did Ruiz request him on site this time?

Black Diamond Gang, smuggling furniture, hiding drugs, this case was uncovered by Jimmy's team, even involving Senior Undercover Seventeen. Right, Seventeen had returned to headquarters; he's now over at the anti-terrorism team. Could Ethan Mitchell be related to Seventeen?

Seventeen revealed his identity to avoid accusations. If it weren't to avoid imprisonment, maybe Seventeen would continue undercover.

Then Ethan Mitchell...

Jimmy turned towards the restaurant; the inside had been cleared out, leaving three people in the kitchen. Two squatting in the corner, one standing, wielding a gun within a small range—this should be the target this time.

Jimmy: "Sergeant Sullivan, I'll try to communicate with him, see if I can persuade him to come out."

Sergeant Sullivan: "Is it necessary? Mitchell inside has a gun; our negotiation expert will arrive soon."

Jimmy: "Don't worry, I'll be fine."

Jimmy returned to his car, opened the door, took out a bullet-proof vest and put it on, heading back to the restaurant entrance. He entered with a police walkie-talkie: "Ethan Mitchell, I'm FBI Senior Agent Jimmy Yang, let's talk this out."

Ethan Mitchell frantically waved his gun, shouting at the kitchen door: "Get out, get out, make them all leave."

Using Heart Eye, Jimmy continually observed Ethan; his actions were highly agitated, appearing to have used drugs before being trapped. In extreme excitement now, Jimmy did not approach the door but spoke from a distance: "Ethan, I know your people, let's have a talk, let them leave and we'll face each other."

"Bang Bang Bang," Ethan fired three shots towards the kitchen door. Jimmy noted the shooting direction and was definitely not at risk, hence no movement, but the outside officers were already frightened, taking cover behind patrol cars and walls, ESU team forming up outside prepared for a tactical entry.

Jimmy gestured to the officers behind, ESU halted their rush and took position not far behind Jimmy. The robbers inside had fired shots, causing uncertainty about the hostages' condition, initially planning a strong assault.

Jimmy: "Ethan, don't hurt the hostages; say what you want."

Ethan was still very agitated, his body and hand moving abnormally while shouting: "Make everyone back off, get me a car, let me go."

Jimmy communicated with him again, urging calmness, when the ESU abruptly stepped forward: "Agent, we received orders; since he fired, hostage safety is critically threatened, it's time for strong action."

Jimmy turned to the squad behind him, nodded: "Okay, you take care of it; I'll follow for support."

ESU team had cooperated with Jimmy a few times, yet this squad didn't seem to recognize him; there are quite a few Asian FBI agents, not just Jimmy, so it's unsurprising.

ESU's style is bold, with bullet-proof shields in front, followed by four SWAT officers armed, rushing into the kitchen. Ethan started shooting as soon as the shield appeared in the doorway, the second SWAT officer behind the shield raised his rifle and shot at Ethan, advancing with the shield; the remaining SWAT officers followed into the kitchen but had no chance to shoot.

Ethan was hit in the first exchange, falling after subsequent shots onto the ground, the gun in his hand still firing twice more, seeming a reflexive neural reaction; his fingers continued to twitch, triggering the gun.

Fortunately, the situation was decent, since Ethan had kept the chefs squatting in the corner; none of them were hit in this shootout. One chef had been shot initially during the holding, but not fatally.

Jimmy followed behind, ensuring Ethan was taken down; if the ESU wasn't ruthless enough, he would have to act.

Ruiz didn't explicitly state it, but Jimmy's judgment was... Ethan would severely impact Seventeen; he must be silenced, or it would trouble Seventeen's side.
