Chapter 592: The Mantis Stalks the Cicada, Unaware of the Oriole Behind
Rodney Priest thought for a moment and asked, "Where is the place you're talking about?"
Jimmy: "76 Walton Street, Bronx."
Rodney Priest's face changed slightly, looking a bit nervous, "Are you talking about that case where a family of seven was wiped out?"
Jimmy nodded: "Yes, does the Priest know about it too?"
Rodney Priest frowned, "Wait here for a moment, I need to check some files."
Jimmy sat down to wait. A few minutes later, Rodney Priest returned with a notebook, "I found it. That building was exorcised and purified by the priest in charge over twenty years ago, why is it back?"
Jimmy took the notebook, which recorded the exorcism process conducted by the priest at the time.
In the 1980s, a murder occurred in that apartment building. The husband shot his wife and children in their sleep and then committed suicide.
The investigation went smoothly, the shooter committed suicide, and the reason for the shootings was unknown, but the case was closed smoothly, and the house was put back on the market. Since then, however, that room saw two more suicides, causing the apartment to become known as the local Ghost building.
The continuous occurrences of such suicides puzzled the police. After investigating the deceased and finding no causes, they asked the district priest to assist with the investigation.
After inspecting the room, the priest conducted an exorcism ceremony, eliminated an earthbound spirit, and sprinkled Holy Water in the room to ensure any spiritual residue was removed.
The priest speculated the earthbound spirit came from the family massacre in the 1970s, but due to the long time and the room having multiple owners, they couldn't investigate further, only record their speculations.
Jimmy: "It's strange, it has been stable for twenty years, why has it suddenly started acting up?"
Rodney Priest shook his head: "I can't think of why either. I'll communicate with the higher-ups about sending someone over to take a look. Thank you for the information, Detective Yang."
Jimmy: "No problem, since you have arrangements, I'll head back first. If you investigate the scene, could you notify me in advance? After all, we'll frequently cooperate in the future."
Rodney Priest thought for a moment, nodded in agreement, saw Jimmy out of the church, then returned to arrange an investigation.
Jimmy called Kevin to confirm Alex Green was preparing to pay the ransom, and the NYPD would follow the regular procedure to track the kidnapper collecting the money, find Elliot Green, and rescue him.
Jimmy had previously learned about the investigation process for a kidnapping case. The police's process is similar to the FBI's, differing in the less information they can investigate, their lack of jurisdiction beyond the city limits, which is inconvenient. However, usually within the same city, they have advantages, as there are more police officers.
After waiting for half a day, the kidnappers finally sent the location for the exchange, Bronx Zoo, at 7 PM.
Indeed, they gave Alex six hours to gather the cash to delay until the evening. Although the police had more personnel, during rush hour, it's hard to track a designated vehicle if they're on the road.
After leaving the church, Jimmy returned to the Bronx District, just in time to head to the zoo.
Jimmy first parked far from the zoo, constantly watching the people left and right of the entrance. They agreed to meet on the sidewalk to the right of the zoo entrance, visible from Jimmy's position. He believed the kidnappers wouldn't make the exchange there directly; they would change locations several times.
Indeed, when Jimmy saw Alex's car approach and park by the roadside, he received a call. Jimmy immediately looked left, right, and the surrounding buildings; anyone on the phone was his target.
Quickly, Alex started the car and continued moving, with the car radio announcing a new exchange location, along the Soundview Park beside the Bronx River.
Jimmy did not move but focused on someone watching from the window in a nearby building. When the stereo broadcasted the new address, he had just hung up his phone and headed out the door, soon reaching downstairs.
A young white male appeared, looking under 30, got into his car at the roadside, started it, and drove in the opposite direction of Soundview Park.
Jimmy started his vehicle and followed, arriving at the northern Woodlawn Cemetery.
The man parked at the entrance, got out, and walked in. Jimmy considered for a moment, also parked by the roadside — there were already some cars there, so it wouldn't stand out — and followed the man into the cemetery area.
Jimmy muted his phone and saw the man sitting on a roadside bench, only stopping when he saw he wouldn't be moving soon. He then returned to his car, using the car radio to confirm Alex hadn't reached the location yet.
Watching the man from a distance, Jimmy soon received another police notification via the car radio of a new location, which was the current Woodlawn Cemetery.
Seeing the man just take the phone away from his ear, Jimmy confirmed it was him.
Seizing the opportunity while he was still at a distance, Jimmy approached his car and glanced inside. On the back seat were two duffel bags, filled with something bulging inside; he didn't notice anything else for now.
Jimmy took out his phone and called the FBI's technical support department, needing them to urgently check the license plate information on this car.
