North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 589: Playing Dumb

About half an hour later, Nia woke up. The doctor's judgment was indeed very accurate, which shows their rich experience. Kevin and Jimmy were sitting on either side of her hospital bed, and being able to see her family the moment she woke up, Nia was clearly very excited.

Jimmy was the first to notice that Nia was awake. He held Nia's left hand and asked, "Nia, you're awake. How are you feeling?"

Upon hearing Jimmy's words, Kevin immediately stood up. Nia glanced at Jimmy and then turned her head to look at Kevin, "Dad, why are you both here?"

Kevin: "You got shot, how could we not come? Your mom will be here soon. How are you feeling? Is there anything uncomfortable?"

Nia looked at her right shoulder and shook her head, "Nothing much, don't worry, I'm okay."

Kevin: "Good to hear that. What exactly happened today?"

Nia glanced at Jimmy and then looked towards Kevin, "Today I went to investigate a missing person case. When I was returning around noon, I happened to hear gunshots. Three patrol officers were in a shootout with someone, so we identified ourselves and joined in, and I accidentally got shot during the firing."

Kevin: "Was it a sudden event?"

Nia blinked, "Yeah, we were just returning to the police station as usual. Wait, are you saying someone set me up?"

Kevin: "Just trying to rule out that possibility. It's okay, then I'm relieved. Jimmy, give me the lighter."

Jimmy was taken aback for a moment and quickly took out the cigarette pack and lighter and handed them to Kevin. Holding the cigarette and lighter, Kevin started to walk out while saying, "You guys chat, I'll go pick up your mom."

Jimmy and Nia watched Kevin leave the ward, and after he even closed the door behind him, Jimmy sat down, "How about it? Does the wound still hurt?"

Nia shook her head, "The anesthetic effect probably hasn't worn off yet, I'm still fine."

Jimmy: "How does it feel to participate in a gunfight for the first time?"

Nia pulled a face, her mouth drooping, "It wasn't good at all, it's completely different from shooting targets, really nerve-wracking. While firing, I didn't even have time to aim, just roughly pointed in a direction and shot. And when I got shot, I was completely stunned, didn't know what to do at all. If it weren't for someone pulling me, I might have just collapsed."

Jimmy: "Did you stop shooting after you got shot?"

Nia nodded, "Yeah, after getting shot, I hid behind the car, and only relaxed once they sent me to the hospital."

Jimmy breathed a sigh of relief, realizing he was overthinking, as Nia only fired her gun and didn't kill anyone, which would reduce her psychological pressure significantly. He patted Nia's hand, "That's good, those two must have been hit by others, so you can relax."

Nia: "Ah, how are they? Did anyone else get hurt?"

Jimmy: "No one else was hurt, and as for those two, they were declared dead at the scene."

Nia: "Alright then, I seem to be the unluckiest one."

Jimmy laughed and said, "It's okay, you're experienced now, your mindset will be much better next time."

Nia widened her eyes at Jimmy, "Is that your experience?"

Jimmy: "Of course, I'm very experienced, it's not my first time getting shot. Alright then, you can rest well now, no need to worry about other matters."

Nia: "Fine, by the way, that case..."

Jimmy: "Just hand it over, don't worry about how others handle it, as long as there's a result."

Since Nia wasn't responsible for that case, Jimmy naturally could set the dismemberment case aside. He wasn't investigating to solve the case in the first place, just preparing ahead for Nia, so she could increase her performance and naturally get promotions and raises. Now that she was recuperating from the gunshot, let whoever wants to follow that case take it.

Kevin quickly returned, and with Nia's mom taking care of her, Kevin and Jimmy could leave in peace. Neither of them was the idle type, for sure they needed to get back quickly.

Jimmy returned to the office and after some thought, decided to call Dr. Mary. He checked the time; she should be done with her usual appointments by now. The call connected quickly, and Jimmy greeted with a smile, "Hey, Mary, it's Jimmy."

Mary: "I know it's you. What is it?"

Jimmy: "Just a little thing, you know Nia, right? My fiancée."

Mary: "Speak up, I'm a little busy here."

Jimmy: "Okay, she got accidentally involved in a shootout today and got injured. I'm worried it might leave her with some psychological shadow..."

Mary: "Is this her first injury?"

Jimmy: "First gunshot, and her first shootout like this. We're still not sure if the two dead gunmen were taken down by her, and I'm a bit worried."

Mary: "I haven't met her, so I don't know what's going on. If you think it's necessary, bring her to my office when she has time."

Jimmy: "Alright, I'll mention it to her later."

Mary: "Anything else?"

Jimmy: "No, thank you. I'll treat you and Jenna to drinks sometime, yeah, at my bar."

Mary: "Okay then, goodbye."

On Nia's side, the police station must have arranged for psychological counseling. They've fired guns, people have died, and those police officers who fired will definitely be placed on administrative leave. Now it's just unclear how Nia's situation will be arranged. But in any case, she got shot, so she definitely needs to recuperate at home for a while.

At night, Jimmy was packing Nia's things at home, so they could be delivered to her place tomorrow, as they'll be needed when she moves there later. The phone rang, and Jimmy picked it up, "Ruiz, what's up?"
