None of These Witches are Ever Serious

Ch. 2

Chapter 2

After Luo En uttered those words, the panel in his vision went wild, scrolling through streams of data.

Once the data finally stopped scrolling, the System reactivated.

[Welcome to the System, Otherworlder. You have now unlocked most functions.]

[To ensure the Otherworlder's survival in this world, the System offers a one-time protective measure. It will activate when you are near death.]

But by the time the System came online, the people around the guillotine were already staring in wide-eyed horror.

"Madman! Heretic! Hurry! Drop the blade and chop this bastard down!!!" the Judge shouted, his voice a mix of shock and fury. "His words will bring down divine wrath!! We can't let him live!!!"

No sooner had he spoken than the guillotine blade dropped from above, its harsh scrape against the frame echoing sharply.

Right on its heels came the System's voice in Luo En's mind.

[Death imminent detected. The System is assuming control of your body and will take necessary actions to maximize your survival odds.]

[Please remain calm during this process, Otherworlder. Try not to panic.]

The instant the System's voice cut off, the blade slammed down onto Luo En's neck.

But the gruesome image of his head rolling didn't happen. The blade jammed against his neck, not budging an inch.

Worse for them, a second later, it shattered into fragments across the ground, as if it'd crashed into something unbreakable.

The man watching all this stumbled back several steps in a panic. "What... what the hell just happened!? What did this godless freak do!?"

He'd never seen a guillotine blade break during an execution. This was a first.

No wonder the guy had the guts to spout such blasphemy. Vandall was the chief god who'd forged this world's Ring of Truth—regular folks wouldn't dare talk like that.

"Is his neck made of iron or something?" he gasped in terror, backing up until he hit a pillar.

"Guards! Get over here! Someone take down this blasphemous traitor!" The Judge clung to the pillar, ducking behind it.

He hadn't gotten any warning from the Council Member that this "innocent" execution was up against a monster like this.

In his frantic state, a sharp "crack" rang out.

Luo En rose from the guillotine, his shackles snapped clean off his wrists. His demeanor was ice-cold now, a far cry from before.

His eyes glowed deep blue, and a low rumble like thunder from a tiger or leopard echoed faintly from his bones.

The only silver lining? Luo En was unarmed.

He was empty-handed, and their intel on him said he was no big shot anyway.

No worries. No worries. A few more guys, and they could take him down.

That guillotine shattering out of nowhere? Had to be some cheap trick.

How else could a solid machine like that just fall apart like scrap?

"Grab him! More guards, now!!" Heartened, the Judge bellowed again.

The nearest Jailer snapped out of his daze from the blade's destruction and yanked his waist knife free. "I've got him!"

But Luo En's fist caved in the man's armor like tin, and he snatched the knife away with ease.

"Urk..." The Jailer hacked up a mouthful of blood, confusion clouding his eyes.

He was in full armor—how could he be this fragile?

Luo En silenced his doubts with a backhanded slap that floored him.

He strolled toward the cowering Judge, gripping the freshly taken knife.

"Wait!! Wait! Mercy!!!" the Judge screeched, his voice shrill and ear-piercing. "What do you want? Name it—I'll give you anything! That's right! It was the Council Member who had me grab you! The Council Member!!!"

Luo En didn't reply. He just raised the blade and slit the Judge's throat with surgical precision.

The motion was flawless, honed like a master's strike—clean and lethal.

He wielded the long knife like a scalpel, delicate as a dagger.

"Gah..." The Judge clutched his gushing throat, dying without ever understanding what hit him.

The blade had dropped, yet the condemned man not only survived but turned the tables and killed him? No one could've seen that coming.

"Help..." Survival instinct kept him gasping for aid, but it was obvious to anyone he was done for.

Meanwhile, Luo En advanced on the next target, knife in hand.

[To boost Otherworlder survival odds, initiating site clearance now.]

......

......

Fifteen minutes later.

Luo En stood at the heart of the execution ground, blood dripping steadily from the tip of his knife.

He was the only one left alive—everyone else lay dead at his hands.

[No life threats detected. Takeover concluded.]

With those words, Luo En regained control of his body. Cold sweat trickled from his chin.

Of course he was safe now; he'd wiped the place clean, not even a fly left buzzing.

[The System notes that you triggered the one-time protection right after integration. Please level up quickly and avoid over-relying on this System.]

[Reminder: This System aims to make you the strongest being on earth. Dependence won't make you stronger.]

Before Luo En could respond, a sweet tang rose in his throat, and he spat up a gush of blood.

The knife clattered from his grip as weakness flooded him.

The hand that had smashed the armor throbbed like it might split open.

When he collapsed, though, it didn't hurt as bad as he'd feared.

Looking down, he spotted a writhing puddle of black sludge beneath him—it had broken his fall.

[Hello, Otherworlder. Mana overflow from a rampaging protobody detected nearby.]

[Recommended: Extract the excess Mana. This will also aid System upgrades.]

"What do I get out of this?" As Luo En spoke, he realized his voice was a little hoarse.

[Response: There are no benefits at the moment, but in the future, it can provide you with tremendous help.]

The System's words felt like it was dangling a carrot in front of him.

Luo En couldn't help but let out a long sigh. "How do I extract it?"

[Use any weapon to stab into the core.]

After a moment of silence, he looked regretfully at the slime, which was just like the Black Slime.

It had just helped cushion him a moment ago, and now he was about to stab it with a knife.

Luo En picked up the knife that had dropped not long before and thrust it into the puddle of black slime.

Visible mana flowed along the blade, pouring straight into his body.

But Luo En didn't feel like he'd gained anything extra. The mana vanished without a trace the instant it entered him.

At the same time, the puddle of black slime began to bubble and boil, as if a monster was about to emerge from it at any moment.
