Noctem

Chapter 23: spawns

Eren was left with two remaining questions he could ask, in truth he didn't expect the ominous figure clad in an obsidian armor to provide such descriptive answers even though he said he'd answer their questions if he's permitted to, so honestly it was a bit surprising how the tenebrous knight had gone into details about spawns of elements, concept and gods.

While he knew about the spawns of gods, he knew close to nothing about the spawns of elements and concepts.

Although it wasn't that much of a secret that the spawns of elements indeed existed, they were more mythical than facts, at least to the masses or denizens of each respective realm.

In the first place only a few spawns of elements had been mentioned in the old records, from the age of heroes.

Some of the spawn of elements mentioned were—

—Cassa of radiance — the spawn of light.

—Nyla the timeborne— the spawn of time

—Ezriel of dreams — the spawn of dreams

They were the pinnacle of strength during their time, fending off the threats of the outers while protecting the realms.

Although there were more spawns of elements who aided them, most of them chose to remain anonymous to the denizens of the realm but played a huge part in the war against the outers.

A few of the spawns of concepts were recorded as well, having also contributed to the peace as well as chaos of the realms, While not as hidden as the spawns of elements, only a few of them were recorded down in the old records,

They were..

—Meyrl of gluttony — the spawn of gluttony

—Aschel the berserk god — the spawn of wrath

—sylphete the slothful — the spawn of sloth

—Nevolian of destruction — the spawn of chaos

There probably weren't more than fifteen spawns recorded, when combining both the spawns of elements and concepts, this number itself wasn't small considering the fact that elements and concepts rarely created spawns rather they had contractors and in extremely rare cases, apostles.

The reason for this was because spawns of elements and concepts had strength equivalent to deities and as such, the gods viewed each of them as a threat mainly because they were insecure.

In the end most of the spawns were eliminated.

'This is a problem.'

Nox was already a target of the deities because of the blood of the shadow god which was flowing within his veins as well as his lineage.

As a hybrid between both cursed races naturally he had long become a target of theirs, but they couldn't act out or interfere in the affairs of the lesser realms.

The dark knight remained unmoving and eerily still.

It was hard to tell whether the tenebrous knight was actually a sentimental being with a will of its own or merely a puppet for some other being.

In fact, something about the tenebrous knight seemed to make Eren uneasy

But what was it?

Eren couldn't tell.

Still... His years of experience, from various battles and as someone who had seen his fair share of death, it didn't take much time for him to discern what it was that made him uneasy about the knight.

'He reeks of death!'

To be precise.. the whole realm did.

The reasons weren't too hard for Eren to fathom.

Darkness was an element that existed before others. Time, light, life... Before all these elements, there was absolute darkness.

Darkness itself was nothingness, an eternal oblivion where everything was forgotten.

When a living person enters a state of nothingness, it simply means death. In simpler terms, those associated with darkness had an affinity to death, the same could be said for the nebulous knight, a being made from the divinity of tenebrae would naturally be attuned to death, now Eren understood  the reason for his unease.

The dark knight was surrounded by the aura of death, it wasn't something a living being like him could afford to be close to, No... It would slowly sap his life if the knight willed it.

An eerie silence befell the island which they were currently on.

The tenebrous knight with his gaze fixated on Nox, stood calmly, there was a hint of pride in the way he carried himself.

In a way he seemed like a noble, even the way he held his blade and positioned himself while conversing with them could attest to that.

He waited patiently for the eccentric wizard to ask his remaining questions after noting that the fragment of the spawn of shadows didn't have anything to ask him.

The glowing purple orbs from beneath the narrow slit of his helmet, which was previously fixated on Nox, bore into the eyes of the eccentric wizard with cold indifference, or so the wizard noticed, but still didn't back down.

Although Eren was a bit intimidated by the dark knight, he maintained his facade of calmness, same could be said for Aries whose attention was drawn to the tenebrous sea, however his expression was grim and distant

After a few minutes of awkward silence, Eren decided to ask his third question.

"Your master, what does she want this child for?. You don't think I'm actually buying the idea of the whole ' Your master wishes to meet her spawn' crap. Depending on your answer I might have to refuse the invite your master sent."

"Do not be mistaken wizard, you're in no position to make demands, you're only alive because you're someone important to the successor and because my master wishes it. However, should you resist her benevolent intentions, I will get rid of you." The knight replied in an even tone, but the subtle murderous intent he released and the slight twitch of irritation in his eyes from beneath the mask didn't escape Eren's notice.

"But to answer your question, as I mentioned before, he is a spawn of my master, the only one in existence, as such my master wishes to pass her authority and familiar arts alongside her divinity to him."

Eren quickly glanced at the boat and then to Aries who slightly nodded in response.

"Fine."

He picked up the body of the effeminate boy and began walking towards the boat. The knight said nothing but waited for the shadow and the eccentric wizard to get on before following behind them.
