Chapter 440: Corruption
Deep at night, Jiang Cheng sat in front of the computer alone in the office. His fingers hovered over the keyboard. The screen was filled with human names. They were the people who had recently gone missing in the city. There were almost a hundred of them. For this small city, this was a terrifying number.
Plus… Jiang Cheng narrowed his eyes. He suspected this was only a small part. This could not be explained by a simple crime or people running away from home. They were once like him. They had entered the door that would only appear when one was asleep. However, they were not as lucky and disappeared in the nightmare. It was his habit to say that these people were lost and not dead. It was because it sounded more gentle. It was a strange excuse, but he felt it was appropriate.
The rain was pouring. It felt like someone had poked a hole in the sky. He left the window open, so he could clearly detect the force of the rain outside.
He gave Fatty the thick work outfit. Even though it was not enough to shield one from the storm, it should be enough to help him last until he could find a motel. Fatty had money in his pocket. Hopefully, he wouldn't choose this time to be stingy.
Jiang Cheng pulled his gaze back from the window. He reached out and looked at the image of the door on his left hand. A strange presence spread around him. Something was moving in the dark.
The door didn't just appear on his hand. It didn't look painted. It felt… more like it had grown into his body, becoming a part of him. He didn't know how to explain this door. However, this anomaly reminded him of someone. The middle-aged man around Xia Meng.
He told him that the nightmare was a projection of actual history in the shadows. This twisted history had been stripped of its light and beauty. Only gore, regrets and negative emotions remained. The ghosts were the creations of nightmares. Every twisted history formed its independent nightmare, and each nightmare cultivated a corresponding ghost.
The man looked into his eyes and told him that… these ghosts were the most significant benefit. He still remembered the man's gaze when he said that.
Jiang Cheng stared at the door, feeling it was what the middle-aged man had been talking about. The ghost was the door on his hand… and the thing behind the door.
He could sense the malicious gaze. It felt familiar.
"He has followed me out…" Jiang Cheng sighed and leaned back. He looked relaxed, but the muscles under his clothes tensed. "Wu?" Once he said that, he felt the person inside his body reacting. The heartbeat that didn't belong to him started to pound and become clearer. It eventually overshadowed Jiang Cheng's heartbeat. Perhaps he had imagined, but he heard laughter. It was just clear enough. It came right from hell.
Footsteps came from the stairs. It was even and dragging. It sounded like someone in slippers moving down the steps.
"Are you still awake? Aren't you tired?" The voice was gentle, like spring water. Jiang Cheng was fazed for a moment before recovering. The chill that came from his heart disappeared.
It was not yet time. The thing inside his body still wasn't ready to reveal itself.
He moved his gaze to the door. A woman with amazing proportions was standing there. She had changed. The wine-red pyjama hugged her body. She radiated a luxurious laziness like a prized cat.
Lin Wan 'Er… Jiang Cheng's boss. She said she wanted to stay the night. The reason was that the rain was too heavy for her to drive home alone. It was a lame excuse. Even Jiang Cheng had to admit he wouldn't be able to get anything from her. After all, she taught him everything he knew. How could such a woman be in danger?
Even if criminals accosted her, the former would be the ones in danger.
"Why are you still awake?" Jiang Cheng asked as he rubbed his temples.
Too many things happened around him, and they all reeked of conspiracy. Now that Lin Wan 'Er mentioned it, he was indeed tired.
Lin Wan 'Er looked at him and leaned against the wall. Her scent spread through the room, like a fatal poison. "I can't sleep when I'm alone."
Jiang Cheng rubbed his face helplessly to regain some spirit. Eventually, he uttered, "Can you not act like this?"
Lin Wan 'Er sat down on the couch. She crossed her legs. Even in the dark, they shone silkily. However, Jiang Cheng was not interested at all. He half-heartedly typed on the keyboard. "Actually… You should go back to bed." Jiang Cheng sighed. "I'm fine. You don't need to worry about me."
Lin Wan 'Er swung her legs. She lifted her beautiful eyes, waiting for Jiang Cheng to continue.
Helpless, Jiang Cheng sucked in a breath and promised, "Even if I fall ill, I'll keep on working. I'll never stop your income flow!"
"Promise?"
"Promise!"
"Then, why don't the recent numbers match?" Lin Wan 'Er curled her lips. A soothing glow floated in her eyes. "When you treated Nan Jing and the girls, the bar gave you a 9000 RMB discount. You didn't put that into the records. At least… I don't see it."
Jiang Cheng cursed the boss internally. He promised that he wouldn't say anything. When he went back to the bar, he had to tell the boss's wife about her husband's 'beautiful' past.
Lin Wan 'Er tapped the armrest with her finger. She didn't look impatient but Jiang Cheng felt a lot of pressure.
"You've given the money to Wang Fugui." Lin Wan 'Er sounded calm. Her charm had disappeared. Not many people could see this side of her. Jiang Cheng was an exception. After all, he had been by her side. Certain essential qualities of a person couldn't be hidden forever.
