Neo Soul King Yhwach

Chapter 24: [TWDG] - River Street & Captivity [Reboot]

"We can't go through life without causing some sort of pain. But sometimes, I can't help but wonder if maybe I could've caused a little less"—Lee Everett

[Third Person Pov]

Yhwach's gaze locked onto Lee as he finally asked, "Well, Lee, what course will you take?"

Lee glanced over his shoulder, meeting Yhwach's eyes, After a brief pause, he replied, "The right thing to do."

Yhwach's mouth tightened in what might have been a sneer—or perhaps quiet resignation. How human. Let's see if that serves him or only adds weight to his inevitable fall. Yhwach didn't voice his thoughts aloud, but in the back of his mind, he observed that Lee's decisions, though noble, could very well lead them to ruin. Yet, for now, he would follow Lee's lead.

Marcus and Chuck, glancing at one another, nodded. They understood the risks, yet they'd made their choice without hesitation.

Without wasting a second, Lee took off in the direction of the cries, Clementine keeping close at his side, while Yhwach, Marcus, and Chuck brought up the rear.

Rounding the corner, they found a young man struggling against a walker, desperately trying to keep its snapping jaws away from his face. He looked like he'd been on the road for weeks—messy blond hair, dirty green jacket, worn black jeans, and scuffed boots. A tomahawk lay just out of his reach.

Lee didn't hesitate. He surged forward, grabbed the walker by the shoulder, and wrenched it away from the young man. The stranger's eyes widened as Lee swung his fire axe down, embedding it squarely in the walker's forehead. With a swift kick, Lee dislodged the lifeless body, freeing his axe.

Marcus and Chuck dealt with the remaining walkers, while Yhwach killed the last one with the back of his pistol. The sewer fell silent as the last walker dropped.

Lee moved first, swinging his fire axe with practiced precision, his blade finding the walker's skull. The creature collapsed, and he quickly pulled his axe free just as Marcus, Chuck, and Yhwach dispatched the remaining walkers closing in.

The stranger blinked up at them, clearly taken aback, but his face quickly softened with relief and gratitude. "Thank you so much for helping me," he said breathlessly, nodding to Marcus and Chuck.

Marcus clapped him on the shoulder. "Thank Lee here—he's the one who made the call to help you out."

The man looked at Lee with a grateful smile. "Thank you, Lee. I don't know what I would have done..."

"No problem," Lee replied, giving him a reassuring nod. "You alright?"

Before the young man could respond, Chuck tilted his head, eyes squinting curiously. "What's your name, son?"

The young man blinked as if only now realizing he hadn't introduced himself. "Right. Where are my manners?" He gave a polite nod to each of them. "My name's Isaac Wayne."

"Nice to meet you, Isaac," Lee replied, gesturing to each of the group. "I'm Lee. This here is Jugram," he said, motioning to Yhwach, who acknowledged the introduction with a slight nod.

"Marcus," said Marcus.

"I'm Chuck. Charles if you're feeling fancy," Chuck added.

Clementine, standing beside Lee, looked up and offered a small wave. "Hi. My name's Clementine."

Isaac's expression softened as he looked at her, giving a warm nod. "It's nice to meet all of you. It's good to know I'm not the only person still out of Crawford's reach."

At that, Yhwach's eyes narrowed slightly, a glint of intrigue crossing his gaze.

Lee tilted his head, his curiosity piqued. "So you've run into them too, huh? Mind if I ask what you're doing down here in the sewers?"

Isaac shifted his gaze to him, "Not at all. I got trapped in here when I was escaping from the deadies. I was coming back to my hideout and got jumped by a group of those things. Jumping into the sewers was the only option I was left with if I wanted to stay alive."

Lee nodded in understanding, "I see."

"What about you?" Isaac asked.

"Our story is the same as yours." Lee replied, "We got trapped here running away from the walkers."

"Walkers?" Isaac raised his brow, "That's how you call them?"

Lee nodded in confirmation, "Yes."

"Are you from Savannah?" Chuck asked, knowing Isaac would be a good source of information about Savannah if he was from around here.

"No." Isaac shook his head, "I'm just a normal scavenger. I arrived at this city about a week ago in search for supplies." He looked at him questioningly, "What about you and your friends?"

Lee nodded grimly, "We just arrived in Savannah last night with our group and were jumped by Crawford shortly after we entered the town."

Marcus, standing nearby, scowled and crossed his arms. "Sick sons of bitches. They killed two of our people. Had a little 'disagreement' with 'em—and they started shootin' when we refused to roll over."

Hearing this, Isaac's face fell, sympathy flashing across his face. "That's terrible. I'm sorry for your loss." He hesitated, then added innocently, "You mentioned you had a group, right?"

Yhwach's gaze snapped to Lee, his expression darkening with restrained anger. Do they realize how much they reveal with every word? Trusting a stranger they know nothing about even if the man appears harmless? They're digging their own graves with their misplaced goodwill.

"Yes." Chuck nodded in confirmation, "We got separated from them shortly before we found ourselves in the sewers."

"I see," Isaac said, nodding slowly. "Why did you come to Savannah, if you don't mind me asking?"

Yhwach turned his sharp gaze on Isaac. "You ask many questions for a man we just pulled away from death's jaws." Before he could say anything else, Lee stepped in, cutting him off.

"We came here to see if there are any boats left in this city," Lee explained, He gave Yhwach a brief glance as if to preempt any further objections.

"You've been here for a week, right?" Chuck added, "Did you check out the docks?"

Yhwach's eyes narrowed as he glanced between Chuck and Lee, irritation flickering across his face. Imbeciles. To reveal such critical information to a stranger, do they not see the risk of trusting this man?

Isaac rubbed the back of his neck, looking apologetic. "I did check the docks. I'm sorry to tell you this, but I don't think there are any functional boats left in this city. The only one I saw was completely non-functional—looked like it had been left to rot for years."

Lee sighed, "Dammit."

"Kenny is going to be pissed." Marcus shook his head.

Chuck sighed heavily, shaking his head. "Figures. Guess that's just our luck." He glanced around at the group, then added, "Do you know a way out of these sewers, though? We need to get back topside and try to regroup with the rest of our people."

"No." Isaac shook his head, "I got lost in here shortly after I hid here from the deadies. I was looking for a way out of this place before I got jumped by this deadie over here." He gestured to the now-dead walker on the ground, "It was when you guys appeared and saved my ass."

Yhwach's gaze hardened as the conversation dragged on. "We should get going. We've wasted enough time saving this imbecile." He turned around and started to walk away without waiting for a response.

Isaac bristled, stepping forward. "Hey, who do you think you're calling an—"

Yhwach stopped mid-step and cast a piercing glare over his shoulder, its sheer weight silencing Isaac instantly. The young man's mouth shut tight, and his earlier anger began fading into unease. Yhwach grunted dismissively and resumed walking, his boots echoing through the sewer tunnel.

Lee stepped closer to Isaac, offering a conciliatory smile. "Don't take it personally. Jugram's not the friendliest guy, but he's just looking out for the group in his own way."

Isaac exhaled heavily as he nodded. "Alright. Thanks for saying that."

As the group began moving again, Marcus pointed ahead. "Wait—looks like there's light coming from above."

They all followed Yhwach and Marcus to the end of the hallway, ascending a short set of steps. At the top, they found a small stone platform where sunlight filtered down through an opening in the ceiling. A ladder, enclosed in a narrow well, led up toward the exit. The sight brought a flicker of hope to the group.

"There it is," Marcus said, pointing to the source of the light. "But it's too high for us to reach."

Lee squinted up at the ladder, muttering, "How are we going to get up there?"

Chuck stroked his beard thoughtfully. "Even if we put the girl on someone's shoulders and she jumps for it, that still doesn't solve how the rest of us get up there. We might need to double back or find another route."

Marcus, scanning the area, noticed a broken piece of ladder on the ground nearby. He picked it up and held it out for the group to see. "What do you think about this?" Lee raised an eyebrow skeptically.

"Well, that's probably where the rest of the ladder went, but we don't have any tools to re-attach it or make it stable. I think the best thing we can do is follow the path until we find another exit. God knows when that will be."

Marcus gripped the ladder tighter and grunted in frustration. Lee was a bit scared at his sudden change in behavior and backed away involuntarily just as Marcus swung the ladder and hit a blue sign encouraging citizens not to dump their trash in the sewers. Rather than ricocheting off the sign, the ladder actually caused it to move revealing a hidden hole. Everyone in the group looked at each other in confusion.

Lee put his hands on the top edge of the sign and pulled back. The sign easily came off and the group could see that the hole was certainly big enough for a person to fit through. Marcus dropped the ladder and spoke first.

"Well, well, well...what do we have here?"

"There's only one way to find out," replied Lee. He crawled through the hole without abandon and Clementine, Yhwach, Marcus, Isaac, and Chuck followed him. As Lee made it to the other side, his surroundings changed drastically. Now, the group wasn't in the sewers anymore, but in a small room that resembled some type of nuclear fallout shelter if the sign on one of the walls was any indication.

Supplies lined the shelves indicating that someone may have been using this area to survive.

"This could feed people for months," remarked Isaac.

"We should take this for ourselves if no one else is using it. That would make up for the supplies that we lost earlier." Marcus stated.

"What if it belongs to the bad people who killed Katjaa and Doug?" asked Clementine. That was certainly something Lee hadn't considered. They could be right on Crawford's doorstep and none of them even knew it.

Did they ever mention anything about a sewer?

There was a door at the other end of the room, so Lee slowly opened it and looked around. His eyes widened in shock at what he saw before a gun was immediately pulled on him.

"Well, shit," Lee said.

[Scene Break Location: The Rest of the Group, Savannah, House]

"Okay, you can come, but you better do exactly what I tell you and not make a fuss of anything. You got that?" asked Kenny. Some looks of shock and disapproval were sent in his direction, but he ignored them.

"Hold on a damn minute. Kenny, you can't be serious!" protested Mark.

"I agree. Taking a child out there after everything we just saw is practically suicide. I don't know if you've already forgotten, but there's a dangerous community somewhere in this city that hates children and definitely hates our group for fighting back." Carley added.

"The kid's only going to slow you down and get someone hurt or worse. My daughter already has enough on her plate having to babysit you without putting a toddler into the mix." berated Larry.

"I'm not joking about what I said. Duck's proven that he can handle himself and he's already had training with a gun. Frankly, I think we can trust him with certain weapons, and, most of all, I don't want my son to be without me in this city. He's already lost his mother." explained Kenny.

"Yes, he's lost his mother, Kenny. We have no idea where this other community might be and you are content with just sending a kid out into the streets. Your own son, in fact. Have you lost your mind?" questioned Lilly.

"This is a family matter and I would appreciate if you didn't butt in. My son is making some damn good sense and I'm taking him. End of story. I might defer to you on things about the group as a whole, but you don't dictate the decisions I make when it comes to my own son. Are we clear on that?" challenged Kenny.

Lilly's nostrils flared, but she didn't take the bait. Kenny was one stubborn son of a bitch and there was nothing anyone could do to change his mind once he had made it up. She was just going to have to protect Duck as well.

"We're clear. Let's head out before the people from Crawford have a chance to regroup."

Kenny took his weapon and gave Duck a gun of his own instructing him to put the safety on and keep it holstered. Lilly made sure she had her own weapons before heading outside with Kenny and Duck in tow. For the first time since the group had settled into the motor inn, she felt a little nervous.

Unlike the bandits, the dairy, or Macon, she had no idea what was going to happen once she walked out that door.

[Scene Break Location: The Rest of the Group, Savannah, Sewers]

Lee held his hands up slowly as an older man aimed his gun at him. He was wearing a brown flannel with a dirty white polo shirt and brown khakis. He looked like he had been living down here for a while. There was another man in the room who was African-American with gray hair, a dark green sweater, and brown pants.

"Who are you?" asked the man.

"It's alright. It's okay. I don't want any trouble." said Lee. The man trembled as he held the gun in front of him. Lee could already tell he wasn't some cold-blooded killer.

"Neither do we. Which is why you'd do well to turn around and leave. Right now." instructed the man.

"Vernon, what if he's from Crawford? You can't let him leave." said the other man.

"Boyd, I'll handle it. Are you from Crawford or not? I'll know if you're lying." Vernon warned.

The rest of Lee's group decided to make their entrance at that moment with Marcus pointing his gun at Vernon in retaliation.

"I think you might want to lower your gun there, friend."

Vernon jumped and aimed his gun at Marcus, but stopped as he saw Yhwach, Chuck, and Clementine standing beside them.

"Are these people part of your crew?" he asked.

"Yeah, this is Jugram, Isaac, Chuck, and Clementine. The guy holding the pistol is named Marcus and I'm Lee. Marcus put the gun down. We don't want to threaten these people. We've already made enough enemies as it is." Lee said.

"It's alright. I shouldn't have assumed so quickly. We just got scared that you might have been a part of Crawford and had finally found us." said Vernon as he lowered his gun. Marcus grunted aggressively but lowered his gun after a couple of seconds.

The tension in the room pretty much evaporated at that point.

"How did you know we're not a part of Crawford?" asked Lee.

"There's no old people or children allowed there. Once I saw your friends come out, I knew that you weren't looking for trouble like you said. Of course, you could prove me wrong and kill me and Boyd before robbing us of our stuff, but I would appreciate it if you didn't do that." Vernon stated bluntly.

"We ran into some people from Crawford. Sick sons of bitches that killed two of our people. They said this city was theirs and that we had to leave unless we abandoned them. Then, they started shooting when we refused." Marcus explained.

"Eventually, walkers came and we got separated from the rest of our group. We made our way down here and that's how we found you guys," added Chuck. He looked around the room and marveled as he took in his surroundings.

"This is a nice setup you got."

The room in question seemed to be some kind of old morgue if the cabinets were any indication. There wasn't much besides some covered tables that had plates, utensils, and some candles to light the morgue up. A small clothesline was in the leftmost corner of the morgue, where a pair of jeans were hanging. There were additional candles around the rest of the room to light the entire place, so the group could at least see the whole room.

"Is this some kind of morgue?" asked Yhwach.

"Yeah, irony's always high on my list when I'm looking for a place to survive. Why did your group come to Savannah in the first place?" asked Vernon.

"We came here looking for a boat," Lee answered. Vernon shook his head in dismay. Lee arched an eyebrow at his behavior.

"Ain't no boats around here. Crawford took everything." Vernon revealed.

I know Isaac told us that there aren't any boats but seriously?? Not a single one? How can he know that for sure if he's been hiding down here the whole time?

"So, are you from Crawford originally?" asked Lee.

"Boyd and I were members of a cancer survivors group that used to meet here at the hospital. We're in remission, but that wasn't good enough for Crawford. We were the only ones who managed to escape while the other eight members of our group were rounded up. This old basement's been abandoned for years, so it's as good a place as any." Vernon recounted.

"Certainly scared the living hell out of us. We didn't expect anyone to be down here besides the walkers. As long as you're not part of Crawford, you're all good with us." Chuck stated.

"That sewer system you came through runs all over the city. It'll take you wherever you want to go." Vernon said.

Lee nodded in appreciation, but he wondered if he should ask Vernon to come with him. If he had been able to find this old morgue, he probably knew his way around the sewers and could have helped them reunite with their group quickly. Would he even agree to help them, however?

"Those sewers are like a damn maze. Any chance you could help us find our way back?" asked Isaac. Isaac beat Lee to it as Vernon looked at him suspiciously and shook his head.

"Look, I'd like to help you, but with Crawford up there...I don't want to risk it. Not to mention, I'd be leaving Boyd behind with all the supplies, and if something were to happen to me..."

"Vernon, I can take care of myself. Those bastards haven't made their way down here yet. Why don't you go help these folks out?" Boyd inquired.

"Are you sure, Boyd? You always complained about being left down here alone." reminded Vernon.

"That's different. You have a group of people who are alone and separated from the rest of their people. Don't you remember the first few days after we escaped down here? We could barely eat, go to sleep, or do anything without thinking about what happened to Brie, Joyce, Clive, Angela, and the rest. We can't reunite with our own group, but we can help someone else reunite with theirs. It's the right thing to do." Boyd passionately stated.

Lee was surprised that someone they had just met was going to bat for them, but he appreciated it.

"Please, can you help us? I want to get back and see my friends. Duck, Carley, and everyone else." pleaded Clementine. Vernon looked at the little girl and Yhwach could tell that his reluctance was fading fast.

How could you say no to a face like that?

"From one old man to another, I know it can be hard to trust people nowadays. But we're all on the same side here." Chuck added.

"Yeah, if you help us, we can get out of here quicker," Marcus grunted.

"Alright, alright. I'll help you folks out. Boyd, you're right. I've lost a lot of people since this all started. My friends, my family including my own daughter. I'll be damned if I just sit back and let that happen to someone else." growled Vernon.

"Thank you." smiled Clementine.

"You're quite welcome, sweetheart. Your dad should be happy he's got someone so convincing like you around." Vernon smiled back.

"Oh, I'm uh...not her dad. I'm just a guy doing the best I can for her." Lee quickly corrected. Clementine looked away, her smile turning to a frown.

"Oh, I see. My apologies." Vernon replied. He noticed Clementine was a bit sad now and quickly cleared his throat to get rid of the awkwardness that was settling in.

"I'll be back before you know it, Boyd. The rest of you, follow me."

Lee thought about asking Clementine if she was alright, but he knew what her answer would be.

She'll say yes even if it's not the truth. Either way, that's not the priority right now. I have to get back to the others before I can even think about anything else. It's a good thing we lucked out finding someone new, but if they're reduced to this...Crawford is even more dangerous than we thought.

[Scene Break Location: Kenny's Group, Savannah, Streets]

You're walking the streets of a dangerous area with a kid, something you know is fucking stupid considering the circumstances, and you just let it happen?

Lilly had gone back and forth on her decision numerous times in her head. It wasn't something that she was accustomed to. Normally, she was sure in whatever decisions she had made and that certainly hadn't changed in the time the world went to shit. Even if it was an unpopular opinion, she stuck to her guns for better or worse.

As she saw Duck walk next to Kenny, she wondered why she deviated from her principles. Had she been caught up in the moment? Was she tired of arguing with people? Did she just want a quick resolution, consequences be damned?

It could have been any of those things, but Lilly couldn't pinpoint a single cause and it frustrated her. It just added to the frustration that she felt when she was in the house. Things were going well so far, but that wasn't going to hold.

If we find a boat, I'll let Kenny do whatever the hell he wants at that point. It would take a miracle for the harbor to still have boats in working condition. If those Crawford people hadn't already taken them for their own uses, then they surely salvaged whatever they could.

"Keep an eye out for the others. They could be around here somewhere," ordered Lilly.

"Yeah...sure." Kenny lowly grunted.

"Are we almost at the river, Dad?" asked Duck.

"Yeah, we're almost there," Kenny replied. Lilly looked around for any signs of people, but the city looked completely abandoned. Most of the stores on either side of the street had been boarded up with some windows having various messages for help spray-painted on them. There were a couple of cars that looked to be wrecked, but nothing seemed out of place there.

Surprisingly, they hadn't encountered any walkers. Lilly didn't know whether she should be happy or wary.

We still don't know where Crawford is located.

She was so caught up in her search that she didn't realize Kenny and Duck had both stopped. Neither of them said anything. They were just staring at the sight in front of them.

"What's wrong?" asked Lilly. She moved closer to get a better look and immediately realized what they were seeing. The riverfront was visible in front of them, the water stretching in front of them. However, there were no boats to be seen. Well, no functional boats, as there were a few capsized ones in the water.

Kenny put his hands on his head in disbelief.

"There's gotta be a boat. There's gotta be..."

"There isn't one. It's time we come up with a plan B which is finding the others and getting out of this city." Lilly retorted.

Kenny swiftly turned around and pointed a finger at Lilly accusingly.

"This is the plan! It's the only one we got and you pissin' on it in front of everyone like you did back at the house ain't exactly helping. Well, screw you, I ain't giving up that easy."

Before she could say anything else, he ran towards the water with Duck hot on his heels.

This stupid motherfucker just doesn't know when to give up.

Lilly followed them until Kenny stopped at a boat at the very end of the wooden dock protruding from the side of River Street. He turned his attention to a boat that was half-submerged with the bow pointing toward the sky.

"Can't we use that boat?" asked Duck.

"It could still be salvageable. Let's give it a try." encouraged Kenny.

"Are you serious?! This boat isn't even upright." protested Lilly.

"Why don't you leave the nautical shit to me?" challenged Kenny.

"Fine. I'll go check along the waterfront and see if there are any supplies still here. If you want to be an idiot about this suicidal plan of yours, then be my guest." growled Lilly. She stalked off, not even bothering to see Kenny's reaction.

She made her way to a car that was near the docks and tried looking to see if it had any juice left. Since Katjaa was holding the only gas that they had, they needed to find some way to replenish it in case they had to drive.

The car didn't have anything special for them. The gas had been siphoned, the tires were removed, and the engine parts were missing. Someone had come through this area and cleaned everything out. Lilly didn't even have to think twice about who that could be.

She noticed a telescope near the far end of the street and walked over to it. On the way there, she thought she could hear...growling? It sounded like a walker growling, but it was very faint and weak. She kept walking towards the telescope and the sound grew closer. But, this time, it was more than just one walker. It was several.

She looked out at the water, but all was clear. There was nothing noticeable on the other side of the river, so she turned back to the side she was currently on. She noticed something ahead of her and kept walking until her heart dropped.

Situated in front of her was a wall of dead bodies. Most of them were piled on top of the ground. Some of them were still moving, but they weren't on the ground. They had been fixed onto wooden stakes and started reaching out once Lilly got closer. She also realized that some of the walkers on the stakes didn't even have bodies. They were just human heads that were put there purely for intimidation. A wooden sign telling people to get out explicitly stated the creator's intentions.

"What the fuck?" Lilly breathed involuntarily. She thought she had seen everything since the turn, but it seemed like every group they came across had a competition to see which one was the most deprived. There's no way that this wasn't the same group they had run across, but that meant they had to be close to their base if they had taken the time to construct a walker wall.

We have to be quick.

She made her way to the telescope without further delay and looked through it. A dark void greeted her. Sighing, she looked around and saw a coin slot. If she found a quarter, then that could probably do the trick.

Where am I going to get a quarter from?

She walked back over to Kenny and Duck who were still inspecting the boat or, more accurately, Kenny was inspecting the boat while Duck was just observing him.

"Hey, do you guys have a quarter? I need it to power the telescope over there." Lilly said.

"Don't have a lot of use for small change these days. Maybe you can find one on the street somewhere." Kenny replied.

Lilly turned around and rolled her eyes. It wasn't a bad idea, but hearing it from Kenny didn't make her feel any better. She saw a small outdoor bookstore with a cash register on top of the counter, so she made her way there. A part of her hoped it would be as easy as opening the cash register, finding a quarter, and using the telescope.

Reality hit hard as the register was bare. Even in times of trouble, people still value money above all else. She looked around for any other sources of money, but nothing stood out to her.

Do I really need a telescope to see if there are any boats still here? We can all see that there's nothing.

"Fuck!" yelled Kenny.

"What? You finally realized that boat isn't fixable?" Lilly sarcastically asked.

"Hull's cracked beneath the water line, plus someone stripped out the battery," revealed Kenny. He walked towards Lilly but stopped in his tracks as he laid eyes on the wall at the other end of the area they had come from.

"What are all those walkers doing there?" Duck asked.

"These people are sick. They're using walkers to intimidate people from coming in and that means we're close. We need to get out of this area while we still can." urged Lilly.

Kenny was about to argue, but a sound from another street made him pause. Lilly looked outside and motioned for Kenny and Duck to join her behind the counter.

"What was that?" whispered Kenny.

"I don't know. It could be those people from Crawford. Fuck, have they already come back here?" wondered Lilly.

Kenny took out his gun and loaded it menacingly.

"They're about to find out they messed with the wrong people."

"Calm down. We don't even know who it is or how many there are. If we're heavily outnumbered, it's better for us to stay hidden and hope they don't see us rather than get into another firefight." Lilly whispered back.

"That's easy for you to say. You didn't watch your wife get killed by these animals! I don't care how many of them there are! We're gonna take 'em out." huffed Kenny.

"Yeah, we need to take out the bad guys. They killed Mom." agreed Duck.

Oh, great. Now the kid's getting involved.

"Duck, wasn't killing one person enough for you?" Lilly replied. She didn't know when she became the moral compass, but it probably wasn't hard when your other group members consisted of Kenny and Kenny Jr.

"I can do it. The good guys have to be strong, so they can save people. All the superheroes are strong, but we can't depend on them in the real world. We have to be superheroes for everyone else." Duck replied. It was a surprisingly poignant statement for a 10-year-old.

"Damn straight. Ain't no one else gonna protect us, but us. It's us vs. them. If Lee was here, he'd understand." Kenny added.

"Alright, let's see who it is before we start popping shots," said Lilly. Duck took his gun out from his holster and gingerly took the safety on.

"Hey, put your safety back on. You don't shoot until we confirm it's Crawford. We don't need you accidentally popping someone in the face." Lilly said.

"Aw, come on. I know that I shouldn't put my finger on the trigger," said Duck. Lilly just glared at him and Duck gulped before obeying.

Good to know this little shitstain is still scared of me.

By now, the wind was carrying the sound of voices over to the group. There were definitely multiple people talking to each other.

"You said that your group's plan was to go here?" a man asked. Lilly didn't recognize it at all.

"Yeah, that's what our plan was before we got separated. I don't know where the rest of our group went off to, but I hope they came through here. It's our best bet." said a man. His voice was warm and familiar.

Lilly locked eyes with Kenny. They knew exactly who that was.

Lee.

She peered out and saw Lee come into view along with Clementine, Yhwach, Marcus, Chuck, and two strangers. They immediately focused on the wall of walkers and Clementine even hid behind Lee in fear at the sight.

"Lee!" shouted Lilly. Lee turned around and smiled when he saw Lilly, Kenny, and Duck come out from the bookstore.

"Guys, you're here!" Lee exclaimed.

"Clementine, you made it." grinned Duck as he went over to hug Clementine with renewed vigor.

"Duck, I'm glad...you are...safe." gasped Clementine as she was squeezed hard.

"Good to see you still kicking. All of you." mused Kenny.

"I could say the same to you." smiled Chuck.

"Is this your crew?" asked the old man.

"Who are you?" questioned Lilly.

"My name's Vernon. the kid over here is called Isaac, Your pal, Lee, found me while he was mucking about in the sewers. I helped him get to the riverfront. He mentioned that your group was looking to find a boat, so I figured I'd drop him off here." explained Vernon.

"We appreciate it, Vernon." smiled Lee.

"Yes, you...seem to have helped us. Are you...you're not part of Crawford, right?" asked Lilly. Vernon looked at her dumbly.

"Unless they did away with the age restriction, no ma'am, I am not," he replied. The reunion was interrupted by the sounds of walkers. Lee looked back at the wall in disgust.

Yhwach stood silently, his eyes scanning the grotesque sight of the wall of walkers, his expression unreadable as his mind raced. The pile of bodies, some still twitching and reaching out in a final, pathetic attempt at life, was not something new to him. He had seen similar tactics in his own time—desperation born from a world that had long since lost its sense of humanity.

Of course, they would do something like this. They've found a way to keep their territory and their power. It's not unlike the methods of other groups I've encountered. Weakness will be eliminated, and only the strong, or those willing to abandon humanity, will survive. How fitting that they use the very creatures that destroyed everything to reinforce that message. His eyes narrowed as he processed the scene in front of him.

His voice broke the heavy silence. "What happened here?"

Vernon glanced at Yhwach, hesitant at first, before sighing. "This is Crawford's doing. These are the kinds of people you're dealing with. I heard you had some trouble with them already."

"Yeah, we did," Lilly muttered bitterly.

"I'm sorry for your losses," Vernon said with genuine regret.

Kenny, his jaw tight, asked, "What's the deal with these Crawford people anyway?"

Vernon shifted uncomfortably but began explaining, "Well, they're selfish, rude, violent, brutal, and downright uncompromising when it comes to outsiders or people they deem 'lesser' than them. Even if anyone came into their community with a heart, they sure as hell don't have one now. I used to live in that town before the turn. I was a practicing doctor."

Duck, wide-eyed but curious, piped up. "What happened? Why did you decide to leave?"

Vernon's face darkened. "Well, the rules started to come down. Anyone who couldn't earn their keep—or who Crawford deemed couldn't earn their keep—was labeled a liability. That included people who were too old, too sick, or too young. They were forced to leave, and if anyone made a fuss, well..." He gestured toward the wall, his voice dropping. "...That's what awaited them."

"Fuck me," Kenny muttered. Yhwach and Lilly exchanged a glance, both noticing how Vernon's eyes avoided the wall entirely. Some of the heads on the stakes did look to be people that were a similar age to Vernon, although it was kind of hard to tell considering they had been rotting for a while.

Lilly hesitated before asking softly, "Are any of them...familiar to you?"

"Yes." Vernon simply replied. The daggers in his eyes told her that she should stop prying, so she did.

"How'd you escape?" asked Kenny.

Vernon exhaled, his posture sagging slightly as he recounted the memory. "I was part of a cancer survivor group that used to meet in the city before the turn. After people started getting weeded out, we banded together. Decided we weren't going to wait for the day Crawford decided we weren't worth the trouble anymore. So, we made a plan to escape through the sewers under cover of darkness."

"You have a group down in the sewers?" Lilly asked. Vernon looked at Lee who nodded his head supportively.

"No," Vernon replied, shaking his head. "It's just me and one other guy who made it out. We tried taking a little extra for our trouble, but people got caught, and we barely managed to escape. Those who didn't..." He trailed off, raising a hand to gesture toward the wall.

Yhwach's gaze lingered on Vernon, his eyes narrowing slightly. That's the least surprising thing about them. A society based on the survival of the fittest, where loyalty is bought and sold, and weakness is treated as a crime. A system like this cannot last long. It's bound to collapse under the weight of its own cruelty. Though he didn't speak aloud, Yhwach filed the information away, already considering how Crawford's methods could be used to the group's advantage if needed.

"How about you guys? Did you find a boat?" questioned Lee.

"No, we didn't find a boat. They've all been taken and the ones that haven't are pretty much wrecked. I was trying to look through the telescope to see if there was anything on the far side, but it needs a quarter to work." Lilly said.

"I have a quarter," said Lee. He rummaged through his back pockets and pulled out the quarter he had, which Lilly quickly took. She went over to the telescope and inserted the coin.

"You probably won't have much luck. Crawford took everything they could from this area. Batteries, fuel, engine parts, you name it." Isaac warned.

"It's worth a shot." retorted Kenny. Unfortunately, for Kenny, Isaac was right. Lilly didn't see anything besides the buildings on the other side, the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, and some more shipwrecked boats that were in no condition to sail.

"There's nothing. No boats to be found." declared Lilly.

"Let me look." insisted Kenny. He peered through the telescope and turned it around in all directions hoping to spot something. As the seconds passed by, the sounds of frustration coming from his mouth became more frequent. Lilly had to fight the urge to smirk.

"Goddamnit! FUCK!" yelled Kenny. He almost bumped into Lilly and Duck before walking over to the edge of the street.

"Hey! Keep your voice down!" chastised Lilly. Kenny just looked down at the ground in defeat.

"Shit..." he muttered.

"Alright, we need to come up with a new plan. Lee, I don't know about you, but I think we should get the fuck out of this city while we still can." Lilly declared.

"I agree, Lilly, but this is a conversation that we need to have with everyone else. Where did you guys end up at?" demanded Lee.

"A house in the neighborhood. We'll take you to it." Lilly answered. She turned to Vernon and Isaac.

"Thank you both for helping Lee find his way. We're going to be heading back now, so you should probably get back to your friend and make sure he's okay."

Isaac scratched his chin. "That's good and all, but...I have a couple of questions for you."

"What kind of questions?" Lilly asked, narrowing her eyes.

"Stuff about your group. You mentioned that you're looking to move on from this city. Do you mean that?"

"Well, that was the popular backup plan that we had in case we didn't find a boat, but it's such a big decision that we need to discuss it with the rest of our group members. Everyone deserves a say," said Lee.

"How many group members do you have?" pressed Isaac.

"Twelve," Lee replied.

"You got room for three more?" Vernon asked.

"Whoa, hold on a minute. Lee, we didn't agree to this." protested Lilly.

"Lilly, let's hear him out first," said Lee.

"I'm a doctor and I have skills I can offer you. Boyd might be 61, but he can still be useful to your group. I don't know much about Isaac but he looks capable enough. I've seen the way you handle children and old people like Chuck over here. The fact is, there ain't nothing left in this city for us. The least you could do to help your friends get back safe and sound is to give us a place to stay. We have supplies we can give you to replace the ones you lost."

Vernon rested his case. At the same time, Isaac smiled at Vernon as Chuck looked at Vernon in approval.

"Come on, I think they'll fit right in. Let's not turn these good folks away just because we're scared." Chuck said.

"They're alright." agreed Marcus.

"Can you give me and Lee a moment?" requested Lilly. She pulled Lee aside while the rest of the group started talking amongst themselves.

"Lilly, Their not bad man." pleaded Lee.

"Lee, They might not be part of Crawford, but you really want to show these guys where we're hiding? We don't know them." Lilly retorted.

"I know enough to know Vernon didn't have to help me like he did and I know Isaac isn't a bad man. They're a victim of this city, of those people, of this world, just like us. They're just like us."

"They're not just like us. They haven't been through what we've been through."

"No, they've been through worse." Lilly pinched the bridge of her nose. She already knew she was fighting a losing battle.

"I know you think I'm some kind of bitch..."

"I don't."

"..., but I can't trust strangers that easily. Look at how many we've come into contact with who have been nothing but trouble."

"I understand, Lilly, but that's not true for everyone. Chuck, Justin, and Marcus aren't trouble, are they?"

"No, they're not. They seem to be the exception, not the rule."

"Vernon's a doctor, Lilly. After Katjaa's death, we could use another one." reminded Lee.

"...Fuck it. Okay, fine. How about this? We'll take them back to the house and leave his friend in the sewers for now. Once everyone gets to meet them, then we can make a better decision. If they're genuine, there won't be any issues. Got it?" asked Lilly.

"Fine by me." smiled Lee. They headed back to the rest of the group.

"Alright, Vernon, Isaac. You're both good to come with us, but...before we can let you both into our group, we want you to come see what we're all about. You're always free to change your mind if you don't like what you see, but we want the entire group to get the chance to know you." Lee explained.

"Sounds fair. As long as you don't turn on me, we should be fine. I'm sure Boyd will be a bit worried about where I am, but he knows not to do anything stupid. Let's head there quickly before we run into any trouble." Vernon proposed.

"I could work with that, like Vernon said let's head there quickly before we run into trouble." Isaac agreed.

The group started to head back to the house. Lilly glanced over at Kenny who seemed to have lost a spring in his step. While the petty side of her did feel happy that he had been proven wrong, she did feel a little sorry for him. It was his dream, a misguided dream nonetheless, but it was his dream, something he had yearned for since he got to the motor inn.

There's no chance of that happening now.

With the extra manpower, the group was now stomping around the streets like they owned the place. There was nothing in their way except for a couple of walkers, which they quickly disposed of. They entered a new street about halfway through and Lilly saw the sign for a giant supermarket. It didn't look as outdated as the buildings around it, so maybe there could be something left.

"Hey, do you see that? There could be supplies in there. We should make a quick stop." Lilly said.

"Didn't we tell you? Crawford took everything in this area. If we were on the other end of the city, I would agree with you, but we're not." reminded Vernon.

"We just potentially added three new people and we lost a bag of supplies already. I don't plan on coming back to this area. While we're here, we might as well cover this area. We could check the stores around the supermarket for gasoline or diesel fuel for the train." added Lilly.

"Crawford usually marks where the runners go once they're done clearing areas out, but I don't see any markings here. Of course, they didn't do that in the early days, so that doesn't mean they haven't come through here. This could be our lucky day." revealed Vernon.

"It's worth a shot. Let's do this quickly and then get back." agreed Lee.

"Can I go help with the supermarket?" asked Duck. Kenny had a worried expression on his face.

"I'll go to the supermarket seeing as it was my idea. Duck can join me. I'll tell him what to look for." Lilly volunteered. To be honest, she didn't expect Kenny to feel better about his son going with her of all people.

"Fine. Make sure nothing happens to him. I'll head to that convenience store next to the alley on our left." said Kenny.

"Me and Chuck will come with you." volunteered Marcus. as Chuck nodded.

"As will I," Yhwach replied.

"Lee and Clementine, I could use your help clearing that pharmacy over there. Any extra medicine will be useful to our cause." Vernon pointed out.

"Sure thing. Everyone should meet back here in around 10-15 minutes. We're not going to take all day." ordered Lee.

The group quickly dispersed to their respective tasks. Lilly tapped on the glass door and motioned for Duck to wait while she listened for any walkers still inside the supermarket. Nothing seemed amiss, so she opened the door and beckoned the boy to come inside.

She didn't know why she suddenly decided to volunteer to keep Kenny's son safe. She could have just let the man take his son to the convenience store, but, if he was going to go on runs, he had to be taught right.

Make him disciplined instead of impulsive like his father.

"Duck, here's what you do whenever you search an unfamiliar place. First, you tap on the windows, and doors, or make any kind of noise to see if there are any walkers like I just did. Now, if you don't see any come or you don't hear any, that doesn't mean the place is clear. Do you understand?" whispered Lilly.

"Yeah, so what do we do now? Grab food?" whispered Duck.

"No, we check each corridor to make sure there are no dormant walkers. If there are back rooms, we search for them too. Once we know the place is clear, then we grab whatever we can and get out. Do you understand?" asked Lilly.

"Yeah, I got it. Lilly, what if we see people?" asked Duck.

Lilly thought about it for a minute. Should she tell a child to shoot someone no matter what?

"If you can, don't try to talk to them. If you have to, tell them that you're armed and that they shouldn't try anything unless they want to be shot." Lilly finally replied.

Better than telling a child to shoot first and ask questions later.

"Okay. What should I do now?" Duck dumbly asked.

"Go look in the far left corridor and make sure there's nothing there. Do NOT use your gun unless you have to. Noise attracts walkers and we don't want more of them to come here." ordered Lilly.

"I'm on the case," promised Duck.

He left and Lilly went to the far-right corridor to start her own search. There were no signs of walkers or supplies as the shelves were almost completely bare. Maybe Isaac and Vernon were right about Crawford clearing this place out. Shaking her head, Lilly marched down the entire corridor and saw an old bag of flour, ripped open and spilled on the marble floor.

We're not going to be baking a cake anytime soon.

Lilly made her way to the next aisle and found a small pack of Ritz crackers. The bag was crumpled, but the crackers were edible. It was better than nothing and she had no right to complain. She remembered that Duck didn't have a melee weapon and mentally slapped herself. If he found a walker, how was he going to be able to take it out quietly?

I should go see what he's doing.

Lilly walked out of the aisle and sneaked over to the other end of the store. As she reached the middle aisle, a sudden gust of cold air hit her. She looked down the aisle and saw that the door was still closed.

That's weird. Why did it become cold for a brief second?

It wasn't particularly windy, so the door should have been able to withstand the wind. Was there a draft coming in from somewhere? Lilly turned around and doubled back towards the section that she came from. The freezers at the back were closed shut, but any perishable items that the group could have used had been taken long ago. She put her hand in front of each of the doors, but there was no sign of leakage coming from any of them.

The air conditioner definitely hadn't come on. Had Lilly imagined it? She turned back in the direction of Duck and made her way past two of the aisles before she felt something pressed to the back of her head.

"Drop your weapons." said the man.

Lilly complied and she dropped the knife she was carrying along with the gun she had in her back pocket.

"Who are you?" asked Lilly.

"I'm a guy that was part of the same community as the dudes you shot up." answered the man.

"What do you want with us? You killed two of our people already. Is that not enough?" questioned Lilly.

"No, it's not enough. You need to atone for your sins. And we're going to make sure you tell us exactly what we want to know. Now, get moving before..."

"Hey! Get away from her!" yelled Duck. The man immediately pivoted Lilly around until she was at the end of the aisle. Duck was on the other side with his gun pointed at her.

"Whoa, little man. Don't you think you're a bit too young to be carrying guns around like that?" the man replied.

"Get away from her or I'll shoot." threatened Duck.

"You'll shoot me. Do you understand that there's a very good likelihood that you'll shoot your lady friend here too? Be reasonable and put down the gun, squirt."

"I'm warning you." Duck gritted through clenched teeth.

"Duck, just get out of here. Run," ordered Lilly.

"But..."

"You ain't going anywhere, kid. There's gotta be consequences for threatening a man like that."

The man in question had loosed his grip on Lilly slightly and had pointed his gun in Duck's direction. That was all the wiggle room Lilly needed.

Remember your dad's training. You might not have been a soldier, but you're a military brat.

Lilly twisted the man's right arm and punched him in the face. The man fired a shot, but it went harmlessly to the ground. The two of them got into a struggling match with the gun. Lilly heard the doors open once more and heard voices shouting.

They were not voices she was familiar with.

"Duck, get out of here and warn the others! Go!" shouted Lilly. She wasn't about to put a kid in this situation. Instead, she kicked the man in the balls and he crumpled over. Lilly took his gun and started running, but there were two other men blocking her way. Duck was nowhere to be seen.

"Surrender now." ordered one of the men. He had a brown skin complexion. Lilly didn't bother listening and raised her gun to shoot, but the man was quicker and fired a bullet into her arm. Lilly cried in pain and the shooter immediately bull-rushed her.

She went for a left hook, but the man grabbed her and kicked her in the face. She fell to the ground and tried rolling away from him, but he kicked her in the ribs and then curb-stomped her, knocking her out for good.

[Scene Break Location: Crawford's Group, Savannah, Marsh House]

Oswald looked back to see Lucas and Jasmine were still keeping pace with him. Their little sweep hadn't managed to net them many supplies, but it had managed to awaken a whole colony of walkers who were now following them in pursuit.

"Lucas, how far to The Marsh House? We can lose them up there," said Oswald.

"It's a couple more streets. Look, we can see the building from here." Lucas replied.

The tall structure was indeed visible to the trio. The plan was simple. Go in through the back door, wait a few minutes to catch their breath, and then head out through the front door. The place was close to the waterfront, but they couldn't go through the south side, so they decided to head to the east side, as it was the next closest entrance.

Oswald kept running until he saw salvation in the form of a back door. They had already cleared the place out weeks back, so there would be no problems once they got inside the hotel. He opened the back door and ushered Lucas and Jasmine inside before shutting and locking it. There was a filing cabinet next to the back door which Lucas and Jasmine pushed in front of the door for extra defense.

Jasmine was busy pointing her sniper at the hallway in front of her. Oswald knew that it was almost an involuntary action at this point, but he couldn't help but wonder if Jasmine was scared or just fearful that something would go wrong.

It's not like I can tell from her face. Her lower half is always covered with a mask and she's about as emotional as Lucas. Two background characters watch the world go by with a blank expression on their face.

"Alright, let's get up to one of the rooms. We'll wait for about 30 minutes and then we'll go out the front. Make sure to remove the filing cabinet before we leave just in case someone else needs this plan." Oswald said.

Neither of them said anything and just followed Oswald to one of the hotel rooms. He opened it and was met with a nice living room. Well, it had a couple of tables, a couch, and an unworking TV, which was about as nice as it got in apocalyptic Savannah.

Oswald sat down on the couch while Lucas sat down next to him and Jasmine sat on the floor, inspecting her gun.

"This was a nice place. They even have a separate room for the bedroom and bathroom. Can you imagine living in a place like this?" grinned Oswald.

...No response

"Guys?"

...Still no response...

"Look, I love hanging out with you guys. I truly do. But I swear I've seen deaf people talk more than you two. Can't a guy have a conversation with his buddies? Just a bit of small talk?" pleaded Oswald.

"We don't do small talk," grunted Lucas.

"What he said," whispered Jasmine.

"Ok, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, I know you guys are less social than my computer nerd friends, but a simple 'How was your day today?' would really cheer me up." Oswald pouted.

"Why would I ask how your day has been if I don't give a fuck how your day has been?" questioned Lucas. Jasmine coughed and Oswald made a face at her, given that she was trying not to laugh and barely succeeding.

"Thanks, guys. I really appreciate it." Oswald said sarcastically.

"You're welcome," Lucas replied.

"No, Lucas, I was being sarcastic."

"Oh." Oswald leaned back on his couch.

"Well, I hope you guys have a great rest of your day today."

"Was that you being sarcastic?" asked Lucas.

"No, I was being genuine." retorted Oswald.

"He's lying Lucas." Stated Jasmine.

[Scene Break Location: Crawford's Hideout, Savannah]

Lilly let out a painful groan as she opened her eyes, having just regained her consciousness after who knows how long. She tried to move from her place in an attempt to escape and get away, only to realize she couldn't move.

She looked over her shoulder and saw a rope tied around her, making her unable to move. It wasn't the only thing she noticed after turning around. It was when she saw another woman right next to her and had a rope tied around her as well. She unlike Lilly hadn't woken up from her slumber and was still sleeping. Knowing she had to wake her up quickly, she immediately started trying to wake her up.

"Hey wake up." She called out for the woman, trying to wake her up as the woman remained silent, still sleeping, "Uhh hello?!"

"W-Wh..." The woman said as she opened her eyes, having been woken up from her slumber by Lilly calling out for her. Her eyes widened as soon as she opened her eyes, seeing where she was right now. She set her eyes on Lilly and opened her mouth, being a second away from saying something to her. She was cut off when Valentina's voice rang through her and Lilly's ears.

"Would you look at that?" Valentina said as Lilly and the other women looked over to the source of her voice and saw her standing with Kevin, "Looks like our sleeping beauties are awake."

"You took your damn time. We were starting to think you weren't going to wake up anytime soon." Kevin stated as he looked over his shoulder and called out for his boss, "Boss! They woke up!"

Kevin and Valentina remained where they stood, waiting for Crawford, Jack, and Franklin to make their way to them as the women and Lilly stared at them. Lilly sighed internally, forcing herself to stay in her plane and not do anything as she glared at Kevin and Valentina. If it wasn't for both of them watching her and the unknown woman next to her right now, she would try to break herself free from her bounds.

Crawford, Jack, and Franklin made their way to them a few seconds later. Lucas stopped next to Kevin and Valentina and Franklin leaned against the wall and crossed his arms, watching both women with a wary look on his face. Crawford stopped right in front of Lilly and the other women.

"Hello there," he said smoothly, the false politeness in his voice grating on Lilly's nerves. "How about we start our discussion with a quick introduction? My name is Oberson Crawford." He gestured casually toward his group, who stood like statues behind him. "Kevin, Valentina, Jack, and Franklin—my comrades. And you are?"

"Lilly." Lilly introduced herself to him, knowing it wouldn't mean anything to him or to his group.

Crawford's smirk widened. "Lilly. That's a pretty name. I already know the other woman here... Molly, was it?" He turned around towards the woman tied up beside her. "You were one tough bitch to track down, I'll give you that. Killed quite a few of my men with your little stunt, ringing those church bells."

Lilly's eyes widened slightly, flicking toward Molly. She rang the bells? That's why walkers swarmed the streets when we came into the city?

Molly glared daggers at Crawford. "Go to hell," she spat in his face.

Kevin and Valentina raised their weapons immediately, but Crawford raised a hand to stop them, his expression was calm although his jaw tightened. He wiped the spit from his face with his hand. "Tough little bitch, aren't you? You'll regret that soon enough."

His focus returned to Lilly, studying her like a predator assessing its prey. "A little birdie told me you're part of a group—one that's been causing quite the stir. " he said, "You killed two of my men when you arrived in my city. And more importantly," his smirk returned, "you're looking for a boat, no? Whose bright idea was it to find a boat? Hmm?"

Lilly clenched her teeth, her mind screaming Kenny's name, but she said nothing, refusing to give him the satisfaction.

Crawford's hand shot out and gripped her face, tilting her head up to meet his eyes. "When I ask a fucking question, I expect a goddamn answer," he said.

"Get your filthy hands off me," Lilly snarled.

Crawford's eyes narrowed, his grip tightening for a moment before he let go and straightened. "You seem to be under the impression that you're in a position to make demands," he said. "Let me clarify: you're in no position to resist or question us. You will tell us everything—how many people are in your group, why you came to Savannah, and how you found yourself in my city. Refuse, and I promise you, we'll make you talk. It's only a question of how unpleasant that process will be for you."

Lilly glared up at him, her breathing heavy. "Why should I share anything with you?" she snapped.

Crawford leaned down, his face inches from hers. His smile was gone now, replaced by an icy, predatory expression. "Because you have no other choice," he said softly. "You're tied up, surrounded, and outnumbered. The only choice you have is whether this goes smoothly or... not."

He leaned back, his cold gaze sweeping over Lilly and Molly. "So now, make your choice. And be quick about it. If you waste my time, I'll make the decision for you."

Lilly's mind raced, her thoughts simmering with disdain and defiance. Kenny. This is his damn fault. But if I tell them that... will they target him first?

Her jaw tightened as she weighed her options. Think, Lilly. If you give them nothing, they'll take everything the hard way. But if you tell them too much... you might doom everyone.
