The next day.
"Oscar, please have a seat. I apologize for the mess," Liam said, extending his hand to welcome him.
Oscar walked into Liam's office and glanced around, curious to see the workspace of the youngest head coach in NCAA history.
After staying the night in a hotel, he had arrived at the Butler University campus early that morning.
"Coach Gonzalez, I've heard so much about you. You're now a household name across America," Oscar said, shaking Liam's hand with a smile.
"You're being too kind, Oscar. I'm far from being that good. You can just call me Liam," he replied humbly.
Oscar smiled and adjusted, "Alright, Liam, but drop the formalities—just call me Brother Oscar. I may be older than you, but no need for titles."
Being nearly twenty years older than Liam, it felt awkward for Oscar to keep calling him "Coach."
"Haha, okay, Brother Oscar! How about I show you around the school first?" Liam offered, smiling.
Though unfamiliar with the basketball world back home, Liam could sense that seniority and hierarchy were a big deal. As the editor-in-chief of Basketball Pioneer, Oscar, though not a professional athlete, held a prominent position. Liam realized Oscar's gestures weren't meant to be arrogant, but to extend goodwill.
"Let's hold off on that for now. Work comes first—let's talk business," Oscar said, waving off the tour for the moment.
"Sounds good," Liam agreed.
Oscar opened his bag, took out a recorder and a camera, and snapped a few photos of Liam. A photography enthusiast, Oscar handled all the basics himself. With the NBA regular season in full swing and Basketball Pioneer short-staffed, Oscar had come alone without a photographer.
After taking the photos, Oscar set his camera aside, turned on the recorder, and started the interview:
"You're the first Hispanic head coach in NCAA history and also the youngest. How did you achieve this?"
Liam paused before answering, "It was purely by chance that I got the opportunity to coach Butler..."
For the next hour, Oscar fired off questions, and Liam answered fluently, recounting how he came to lead Butler, his background, his upbringing, and the challenges he'd faced with the Bulldogs. Oscar couldn't help but be impressed.
He hadn't expected Liam's journey to head coach to be so dramatic. Liam's insights into the NCAA were also refreshing and would help Basketball Pioneer introduce the league to their fans back home.
"Liam, thanks so much for the interview. I came all this way, and it was well worth it," Oscar said sincerely as he turned off the recorder.
"Success means nothing if I don't share it with those who helped me get here. I should be thanking Basketball Pioneer for giving me a platform back home," Liam said with a smile.
"Haha, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule..." Oscar nodded, his respect for Liam deepening.
Initially, Oscar had thought Liam—given his young age and the impressive results he'd achieved—might be difficult to work with, so he came prepared for a rocky interview. After reading various American reports about Liam's bluntness, Oscar was even more cautious.
However, Liam's humility and composure during the interview surprised him.
No wonder this young man had made a name for himself in a foreign land—it wasn't easy! Oscar made a mental note to craft a glowing profile when he got back.
Suddenly, Liam smiled awkwardly and said, "I have a small request..."
"Go ahead," Oscar replied.
"Brother Oscar, can you keep my family background out of the story? My parents are regular folks, and I don't want them to be bothered."
"Oh, I thought it was something serious. Don't worry about it," Oscar replied.
"Thank you! Now, how about I show you around? Butler's campus might be small, but it's quite charming," Liam said.
Oscar agreed, and under Liam's guidance, they toured the campus, stopping by Hinkle Fieldhouse, where the Bulldogs played their home games, and grabbing lunch at a campus restaurant.
Along the way, several students greeted Liam as they passed. Oscar took the opportunity to interview some of them to add depth to his article.
Later in the afternoon, after a full tour, the two returned to Liam's office.
"Brother Oscar, there's a great barbecue joint nearby. How about we grab dinner there tonight?" Liam offered as Oscar packed up.
"Oh, I have to be careful with greasy food," Oscar politely declined.
"In that case, let's go to a Colombian restaurant downtown. It's owned by a family from Medellin and they do authentic dishes," Liam suggested.
"That sounds great, thank you," Oscar accepted this time.
The two headed back to Liam's apartment, where his car was parked. Liam drove a second-hand Toyota—beat-up on the outside but reliable, and he had no plans to replace it. In the U.S., a car was essential.
Before leaving, a courier arrived with a package for Liam, who had to sign for it and bring it inside.
Oscar eyed the heavy cardboard box and asked curiously, "What did you order, Liam? It looks heavy."
"Just some books," Liam replied as he struggled to lift the box and cut the seal.
Oscar watched as Liam pulled out thick, academic books—titles like Basketball Tactics Explained, The Evolution of the Pick-and-Roll, and NBA Rules: Defensive Impact.
"You're already a well-known coach. Why do you still study these fundamental books?" Oscar asked, surprised.
"I'm not a championship coach yet, let alone a dynasty coach. I still have a lot to learn," Liam smiled.
Looking around the room and spotting the shelves filled with books, Oscar suddenly said, "You know, Liam, you remind me of someone."
"Who 's that?"
"Kobe Bryant. The way you look at these books is just like how Kobe would approach basketball—pure dedication."
Liam paused briefly before continuing to unpack the books. "Maybe we're both chasing the same dream," he said softly.
That evening, Liam treated Oscar to dinner and the following day, he saw him off at the airport.
The interview was later published in Basketball Pioneer, garnering a lot of attention. Fans learned that a Hispanic coach had made history by becoming the youngest head coach in the NCAA.
But with the NBA playoffs dominating attention, Liam's name was soon forgotten by many—though a few die-hard fans continued to follow his journey.
