Chapter 310: | 310 | Quick Operation: Coastal City of Barako
Inside the operation cargo bay was the hummed of machinery and technology. Amidst the eerie silence of military authority, a lone officer gazed upon the platoon of pilots belonging to the Assault Company of the 201st Strategic Destroyer. The platoon has been deployed for battlefield drop with an ETA of five minutes. It was time to rile them up.
"Men! We have received orders to reinforced the southern coastal front of Europa. The UNSS Asura shall deploy its assault company to support the ground forces of the United Military. The operation does not allow failure. The League of Humanity shall confront the hammer of justice we wield as the angels of the United World Government. Urah!"
"URAAHHH!!!"
As the officer ended his speech with a war cry, the pilots followed with a salute while straightening their backs. Without a doubt, all of them were motivated. Sensing the boost in morale, the officer nodded in satisfaction and commanded. "Begin pilot sequence. ETA: three minutes. Be ready for the rough landing as the drop zone is still a contested battlefield."
The pilots of the assault company walked with determination as they piloted every Assault Mech within the operation cargo bay. The hatches of the steel angels latched with grace while holographic displays emerged from the intricate technology inside the frame. All of them rested on their seats, adjusting themselves and taking a deep breath.
Since the introduction of Mechs, the structure of the United Military had changed. The effectiveness of these machines were far too efficient and beneficial. Combined with the capabilities of the World Government to mass produced them, it didn't take long for the Mechs to be everywhere in the military. It was akin to the invention of airplanes.
The battlefield was practically revolutionized, and there was no doubt that their adversaries needed to adapt. Otherwise, they would be crushed into damnation by the steel angels of the United World Government. In any case, as the pilots completely settled into their frames, a monotone voice echoed throughout their cockpit. It announced the operation.
"UNSS Asura will arrive shortly to the targeted destination in 30 seconds. Deployment drop off will begin five seconds after arrival. Connect to the united network, operation details will be displayed as per protocol. Steel Angels, destroy the blight of freedom." It ended with a short speech, which improved morale even further. Data streamed into their frame, unveiling what needed to be known.
Their target was the Port City of Barako, which inhabited the southernmost tip of the Europa Supercontinent. A couple weeks after the expeditionary fleet was deployed to the Frontier, a skirmish broke out between a particular kingdom of Europa and the United World Government. It wasn't considered an all-out war, and was thought of as tiny contest.
According to reports, the nation wasn't officially part of the League of Humanity. So, technically the World Government wasn't clashing against the Sovereigns and their League. However, it seemed that the kingdom was receiving support from nations belonging to the League of Humanity. Most of it was deemed as humanitarian support, but armaments were also smuggled.
Because of the secret support provided by the League of Humanity, what was supposed to be a week-long operation became longer. Propaganda was full blow between the two sides as one considered the other as betrayers while the other thought of them as tyrants. In any case, the skirmish forces sent by the United Military required reinforcements.
It was for this reason the UNSS Asura was deployed into the battlefield to reinforced the southern front of Europa. At any rate, scanning through the intricate details provided by the united network, the clock of their arrival ticked closer. In mere seconds, the metallic interior of the strategic destroyer trembled as it produced a sonic boom upon its arrival.
The port city of Barako was a mess without a doubt. Rubbles riddled what was supposed to be wealthy trading city. Its beauty had long been tarnished by the destructive arsenal of the League and the World Government. Black smokes ascended to the skies as the streets was filled to the brim with devastation and bullets. It was a saddening sight, a precursor for what was about to come.
As UNSS Asura arrived with a sonic boom over the heavens of the devastated cityscape, several more strategic destroyers followed as they promptly bombarded designated anti-air battery camps. Five seconds after the bombardment, their operation cargo bay unlatched as the steel angels of the United World Government promptly descended.
The airspace above the port city wasn't secure as it was contested by the differing forces. Even though wyverns were rarely deployed to battle against the strategic ships of the United Navy, the League of Humanity has prompted to utilizing anti-air cannons. These cannons utilized bunkers for operation and were concealed in great measure.
A single ammunition bombardment by these anti-air cannons would chip away the shielding of the strategic ships. One cannon wouldn't be problematic, but multiple array of dozens were scattered throughout the coastal front. It was for this reason, after deploying the steel angels of the United Military, the reinforcement fleet initialized spatial transmission and vanished.
Meanwhile, the Assault Mechs of the 201st Strategic Destroyer descended from the skies. Their digital and holographic interface flickered as the winds surged through their body, causing turbulence. From the heavens, the battlefield was no different than a bleak land of suffering and destruction. But the steel angels were built to descend upon hell and bring judgment.
Upon their landing, fog of dust flooded throughout several directions as some buildings collapsed under the load of their weight. It didn't take long for these scattered dust to settle, giving visual of their surroundings. Without any hesitation or delay, their platoon leader promptly commanded the platoon. In the digital map was an anchored beacon.
It was the location of their forces fighting against the defenders of Barako. The platoon of Assault Mechs traversed through the devastated streets, shooting at nearby adversaries that dared to unveil themselves from concealment. There was no mercy as none dared to underestimate their enemies. Especially after the support of the League of Humanity.
*BOOM!* *BOOM!* *BOOM!* *BOOM!* *BOOM!*
Somewhere inside the coastal city of Barako was an entire battalion of soldiers fighting against the vehement defenders of the battlefront. They were part of the vanguard forces that had been sent to deal with the kingdom within a week. However, quite a few weeks have already passed and the current state of the skirmish was stuck in a stalemate.
The smell of gunfire whiffed through the breeze of wind as explosions blasted chunks of city blocks and brought for a fog of dust which covered everything nearby. The commander of the battalion stood inside the basement of a particular building, managing the entire battlefront underground. As he read through reports of the battle, his eyebrows furrowed.
"Those bastards are standing their ground. It seems that they are entrenched with an intricate network that is difficult to plug. This is problematic." He muttered under his breath as armored companies have move forward and conquered over half of the city. The artillery corps has already bombarded everything that moved so their enemies relied underground tunnels.
It reminded him of a certain strategy used in old wars that was described in the military academy. Although there hasn't been actual record of such strategies, it seems that their adversaries were finally learning and becoming adept of countering their doctrine. With this in mind, he pondered about what should be done. "The reinforcements have already arrived."
"It shouldn't take long before they reach our location. With the steel angels deployed, victory is unavoidable. The question is when." His gaze narrowed as he watched his personnel managed the entirety of the battlefield. Communication devices scattered the basement alongside a holographic map displaying the devastated cityscape of Barako.
In any case, the reason why their adversaries had become so troublesome was from the simple fact that their enemies has learned. Their technology has improved as the combine might of a united humanity wasn't to be underestimated. With the support of the Magus Tower, it wasn't difficult for mankind to start building weapons that were anti-human.
Whether it'd be guns, artillery, armored vehicles, and even planes. The United World Government and the League of Humanity were currently trapped in an arms race. The coastal city of Barako was the first testing site of newly-developed weapons. It probably wouldn't take long before the United Military start unveiling their own cards.
After pondering for a moment, the commander shook his head as it wasn't his problem to tackle. His mission was to ensure victory. As long as the last defenders of the city was crushed into damnation, it was victory. With a squinted gaze, he mumbled. "Estimated casualties since the beginning of the battle is 78 and counting."
"I guess the combat suits are proving themselves to be effective. Otherwise, at the current state of the battlefront, hundreds of casualties are expected." One of the newly-developed technologies deployed by the United Military were combat suits. Most consider them a miniature version of the MECH program.
"At any rate, it should be a quick operation after the steel angels begin their assault."
