Chapter 131: 129. The Herald Returns
As the dust settled from the obliterated anchor, Naruto and Ryusei stood in the silence of the battlefield, their breaths heavy and their energy drained. The glowing marks on Ryusei's arms began to dim, the Void and Time energy he wielded receding into his core. Naruto's Nine-Tails cloak flickered faintly, remnants of its power still sparking around him. Though the anchor was gone, the sense of foreboding remained, as though the battle had not ended but merely paused.
Ryusei tilted his head, listening intently. The faint tremor of residual Void energy buzzed in the air like static. He could feel it coursing beneath the surface, threading through dimensions. "The convergence isn't done," he said, his voice grim.
Naruto ran a hand through his hair, his usual bravado muted by exhaustion. "That guy said something about a war. You think there's more of them waiting to come through?"
Ryusei glanced at him, his expression serious. "If the Knight and the Herald survived, they'll retaliate. We stopped the anchor here, but there are still two others. We need to regroup with the others before they strike again."
Naruto nodded, rolling his shoulders as if shaking off the weight of the battle. "Alright. Let's move before—"
A deafening roar tore through the air, cutting Naruto off mid-sentence. Both shinobi turned sharply toward the sound, their eyes widening as a massive rift opened in the sky above them. Swirling red and black lightning crackled along the edges of the dimensional tear, and a suffocating wave of energy spilled out, pressing down on the battlefield like an invisible hand.
From the rift emerged the Herald, its fractured form illuminated by the chaotic energy surrounding it. Despite the cracks in its armor and the faint flickers of instability in its aura, its presence was no less imposing. The jagged staff in its hand pulsed with raw power, and its voice echoed across the battlefield with an unnatural resonance.
"You thought you could sever the convergence," it said, its tone both mocking and furious. "But you have only delayed the inevitable. This world will fall, as all others have before it."
Naruto tightened his fists, his Nine-Tails cloak flaring back to life. "You're still talking? Didn't we already kick your butt once?"
The Herald's eyes glowed brighter, and it raised its staff, pointing it toward them. "Foolish mortals. You cannot comprehend the forces you oppose. Your defiance only ensures your destruction."
Ryusei stepped forward, his blade glowing faintly as he drew it. "You keep saying the same thing, but we're still standing. Maybe it's time you learned that we're not so easy to erase."
The Herald let out a low growl, the air around it rippling with energy. Without warning, it swung its staff downward, sending a massive wave of black lightning crashing toward the two shinobi. Ryusei reacted instantly, raising his blade and channeling a barrier of Time energy to intercept the attack. The lightning struck the barrier, sending a shockwave rippling outward, but the shield held firm.
Naruto darted forward, his Rasenshuriken already forming in his hand. "Let's see how you like this!" he shouted, hurling the spinning orb of energy directly at the Herald.
The Herald swiped its staff, deflecting the Rasenshuriken with a burst of Void energy. The attack exploded in midair, scattering sparks across the battlefield. The Herald's gaze shifted to Naruto, its voice dripping with contempt. "You rely on brute force and chaos. Such tactics are meaningless against the convergence."
Naruto gritted his teeth, frustration flickering in his eyes. "Yeah? Then maybe you should stop hiding behind all that fancy energy and fight us for real!"
Ryusei shot Naruto a quick glance. "Don't let it get under your skin. That's what it wants."
The Herald raised its staff again, and the air around it shimmered as dozens of shadowy figures began to emerge from the rift. These new enemies were smaller than the Herald but no less menacing, their twisted forms wreathed in Void energy. They moved with unnatural speed, their claws gleaming as they charged toward Naruto and Ryusei.
"Great, more of these guys," Naruto muttered, bracing himself.
Ryusei didn't hesitate, stepping into the fray with a burst of Time energy that sent shockwaves rippling through the shadowy ranks. His blade moved like a blur, each strike precise and devastating. Naruto followed suit, his Rasenshuriken tearing through the creatures with explosive force.
Despite their efforts, the sheer number of enemies began to overwhelm them. For every shadow they destroyed, two more seemed to take its place. The Herald watched from above, its glowing eyes fixed on the battlefield below.
"You cannot win," it said, its voice echoing with cruel certainty. "The convergence is infinite. For every anchor you sever, for every soldier you destroy, we will return stronger."
Naruto dodged a swipe from one of the shadow creatures, countering with a powerful punch that sent it flying. "Yeah, well, infinite or not, we're not giving up!"
Ryusei struck down another wave of shadows, his movements fluid and controlled despite the chaos around him. "Naruto, we need to take out the Herald. These things are just distractions."
Naruto glanced up at the looming figure, his expression hardening. "Alright. You keep these guys off me, and I'll hit it with everything I've got."
Ryusei nodded. "Just make it count."
Naruto leapt into the air, his cloak flaring as he began to gather energy. The Rasenshuriken in his hand grew larger and brighter, its edges crackling with Void energy. As he ascended, the shadows swarmed toward him, but Ryusei intercepted them, his blade flashing as he cut through their ranks.
The Herald watched Naruto's ascent with a faint smirk, raising its staff to meet the attack. "You truly believe you can challenge me? Pathetic."
Naruto grinned, the energy in his Rasenshuriken reaching its peak. "You're about to find out just how wrong you are!"
With a yell, he hurled the massive Rasenshuriken directly at the Herald. The attack streaked through the air like a comet, its glow illuminating the battlefield below. The Herald swung its staff, meeting the attack head-on, and the resulting explosion shook the entire battlefield.
For a moment, the world was consumed by light and sound. The shockwave sent both Ryusei and the shadow creatures sprawling, and the rift above them flickered violently. When the dust settled, the Herald remained standing, its form cracked and flickering but still imposing.
"You have spirit," it admitted, its voice laced with mockery. "But spirit alone will not save you."
Naruto landed beside Ryusei, his expression grim. "That was my best shot," he said, panting.
Ryusei's gaze remained fixed on the Herald. "Then we'll just have to try again. Together."
The two shinobi stood side by side, their energy flickering as they prepared for the next round. The Herald's form pulsed with renewed power, and the rift above them began to expand once more. The battle was far from over, but they were ready to face it, no matter what it took.
