"Patriarch, that bastard Fugaku has become the new ANBU Commander. Won't he pose a threat to us?"
Shin and the others had already learned about Fugaku's appointment.
Kanzou had analysed the situation with them earlier—Sarutobi Hiruzen was bound to appoint one of his loyal followers to the position. Now that Fugaku held the title, it was obvious he had become nothing more than Hiruzen's puppet.
"He's just a stray dog," Kanzou replied calmly. "Do you really think he could threaten us?"
He wasn't afraid of Hiruzen, so why would he care about one of Hiruzen's lapdogs?
"By the way," Kanzou added, "all the major clans ganged up on me today, and Hyuga Hiashi was the first to step forward. So from now on, keep a close eye on the Hyuga clan for me."
Kanzou hadn't forgotten his earlier threat to Hyuga Hiashi—and he had no intention of letting it remain just words.
Killing the chicken to scare the monkey—the Hyuga clan would be the first example.
"In addition," Kanzou continued, "I have a mission for you. Spread word across the ninja world that Sarutobi Hiruzen has been seriously injured and is currently unable to fight… the two Elder Advisors are also not in any state to fight."
The timing was perfect. Konoha had just lost the White Fang, Hatake Sakumo.
And now, with the Hokage and his two Elder Advisors wounded, wouldn't other villages be tempted to make a move?
"The Hokage has been seriously injured?" asked Shin in surprise.
"His advisors, too?" Souta murmured in surprise.
"That's right. I attacked Sarutobi Hiruzen's mind with the Genjutsu of my Mangekyō Sharingan. As for Utatane and Mitokado… their situation is even worse. Mitokado has been blinded, and Utatane likely won't be able to bear children anymore," Kanzou confirmed with a smirk.
Although he hadn't taken their lives, their strength had been drastically reduced.
Utatane and Mitokado weren't particularly strong to begin with… and now, with Mitokado blinded and Utatane severely injured, their careers were as good as finished.
As for Sarutobi Hiruzen—while his condition wasn't as dire as his two companions—after suffering twenty-four hours of deadly torture under Kanzou's Tsukuyomi, the damage was not something he could recover from easily.
It was likely he wouldn't even be able to muster half of his former strength.
"As expected of our Patriarch."
Rather than panicking, the clan members were filled with awe. Kanzou had wounded the Hokage himself—proof that not even Konoha's leader could match their Patriarch.
The future position of Hokage undoubtedly belonged to their patriarch.
…
"Hazuki, have one of the Zodiacs keep a close eye on Jiraiya over the next few days. If he tries to leave the village, inform me immediately—and find a way to keep him here in Konoha... You may make use of the Police Force for that," Kanzou ordered Hazuki.
"Understood, patriarch…" nodded Hazuki as she disappeared using the Body Flicker Jutsu.
Kanzou had inflicted severe mental trauma on Sarutobi Hiruzen, something the village's medical ninjas likely couldn't heal.
That meant they would probably try to bring back Tsunade.
And if anyone could convince Tsunade to return, it would be Jiraiya.
Kanzou couldn't allow Hiruzen to recover so quickly—especially when his current condition created the perfect setup for starting a shinobi war.
Leave the village? He'd like to see Jiraiya try—without Kanzou's permission.
Besides, Jiraiya had already shown signs of dissatisfaction with him.
All the more reason to rein him in.
Sure, Jiraiya might be a likeable figure in the original story—but what did that matter to Kanzou?
After issuing his orders, Kanzou returned home.
He had no intention of handling things personally—he would leave the rest to his subordinates.
…
"Kan-sama," Mikoto said, approaching Kanzou, "Now that Fugaku has become the new ANBU Commander. Some members of the clan are starting to get some ideas."
Mikoto was no longer just a housewife.
Kanzou had entrusted her with managing clan affairs, and she now held full authority—as the de facto leader in his stead.
"Their minds are wavering, huh? Heh… are they seriously thinking of siding with Fugaku?" Kanzou sneered.
"It's quite possible," Mikoto replied with a serious nod.
After all, while the Uchiha had always managed the Konoha Police Force, they had struggled to enter Konoha's true inner circle of power.
But now, with Fugaku becoming the ANBU Commander—a post second only to the Hokage in perceived status, excluding the Elder Advisors, the leader of Root, and the Jōnin Commander—some within the clan were inevitably beginning to entertain other loyalties.
"If they truly want to defect, let them. Don't waste time on them," Kanzou said to Mikoto. "I have no use for disloyal, half-hearted traitors. In fact, this is a good chance to cleanse the clan of such weak-willed fools."
Kanzou had no intention of tolerating future betrayal.
If anyone wished to leave and follow Fugaku, so be it—let them go.
They would only regret it later.
"Understood," nodded Mikoto, and just then, a masked Kunoichi appeared before the two and bowed to them, "Patriarch, Mikoto-sama…"
"What is it, Suzume…?" asked Kanzou, stopping his conversation with Mikoto and turning to a member of the Zodiacs.
"Sannin Jiraiya is attempting to leave Konoha. Souta-sama, as per Hazuki-sama's instruction, is temporarily stopping him... Hazuki-sama requests that you come quickly," explained Uchiha Suzume.
"Oh? That was quick," Kanzou said with a chuckle.
He had expected Jiraiya would eventually leave the village to search for Tsunade, but he hadn't anticipated him moving this soon.
"Take me to him," said Kanzou, getting up.
"Yes, Patriarch," nodded Suzume, ready to leave.
Just then, Mikoto asked Kanzou, "Kan-sama, may I come with you?"
"Sure thing, come along," Kanzou nodded, taking her along.
…
Jiraiya—who had been stopped—was visibly irritated, especially since it was members of the Uchiha clan blocking his path.
"Move aside! Why are you stopping me?" he snapped.
"Jiraiya-sama, I advise you not to make things difficult for me," Souta replied firmly, standing his ground. Several other Uchiha ninjas surrounded the area, ready to act if necessary.
"If you won't move, don't blame me for taking action. You lot are already due for a lesson," Jiraiya warned coldly, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light.
He was usually cheerful and easy-going, but in this moment, Jiraiya was dead serious.
"Jiraiya-sama… one of the legendary Sannin, truly intimidating when trying to disrupt the Police Force, is this what you have been taught by Hokagay-sama?" came Kanzou's taunt as he arrived on the scene.
Hearing Kanzou's taunt, Jiraiya hesitated and turned his attention toward him, his expression growing more cautious.
For the old man to suffer such a major setback and be forced to compromise, it was clear that Kanzou's threat had exceeded all expectations.
"Uchiha Kanzou, are you the one who had me stopped? What's the meaning of this?" Jiraiya demanded angrily. It was the first time he had ever felt so stifled within Konoha Village.
"That's right. I gave the order," Kanzou said coldly. "As for the reason, Konoha's Police Force is out on duty, and our task is to make arrests. Arrest Jiraiya."
"Wait, what?" Jiraiya's voice rose in disbelief. "Why are you arresting me?"
He was seething. Kanzou could make up reasons to arrest members of other clans if he wanted—but to arrest him, the Toad Sage?
He narrowed his eyes, wanting to see what excuse Kanzou would come up with.
"The reason?" Kanzou replied flatly. "There have been many reports from women about an ugly old man peeking into the women's bathhouse when they are taking baths. You seem to match the description of the pervert reported by them. So, naturally, you'll need to come with us."
Hearing Kanzou's reason, Jiraiya's expression stiffened—because he had actually done it.
It's just… the women shouldn't have described him as an ugly old man, right?
"Do you have any evidence?" Jiraiya asked, trying to bluff his way out, and with thick skin, "And… Obviously, they're talking about someone ugly… and I'm quite handsome, you know…"
"Mikoto… what do you think? Is he handsome?" Kanzou asked casually.
Mikoto looked at Jiraiya with disgust, as if staring at an ugly toad. She shook her head coldly. "Not handsome at all… It's no wonder no woman wants to be his wife… and he has to resort to peeking at bathing women instead."
"What about you, Hazuki? Do you think Jiraiya-sama is handsome?" Kanzou asked, turning to the dark-grey-haired kunoichi.
Hazuki adjusted her glasses at the bridge of her nose and said coldly, "If he's handsome… then I suppose all toads must be considered handsome."
Several policemen nearby burst into loud laughter.
"You guys…" Jiraiya winced, stung by the cold words of both Mikoto and Hazuki.
To be insulted like that by two incredibly beautiful kunoichi… obviously, it hurt a lot.
Although he wasn't seeking their validation or attention, it still hurt to be insulted like that by beautiful women!
As for not being married yet, he wanted to protest—to explain that the only reason he remained unmarried was because he was still pursuing the woman he loved.
If not for that, there would have been plenty of women willing to marry him…
But before he could say anything, Kanzou waved his hand, cutting him off. "Since both Mikoto and Hazuki say you're ugly, it means you are ugly… and this also means the reports are indeed about you. And if it's evidence you want, we'll have it ready once we take you to the Konoha Police Headquarters."
Having said this, Kanzou signalled to the Police Force ninjas to move in at once and detain Jiraiya.
