Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Kamui
"Rin..."
Tears slid down Obito's face.
For a moment, it felt as though his heart had stopped.
He had thought... he had thought he was going to lose her!
Rin's eyes were brimming with tears as well. Her voice choked as she spoke.
"I'm fine, Obito, but Nag... he..."
The memory of what had just happened flashed through Obito's mind.
At the last moment, when the stone spears had been hurtling toward them, Nagano had shoved Rin into a crevice. He hadn't been fast enough to dodge himself, and the spears had pierced him.
Obito's heart sank as he looked at the girl in his arms. He spoke firmly, "Hold on tight."
Rin curled into his chest, nodding her small head vigorously.
"Okay!"
Obito tightened his hold on her and leapt upward, bursting through to the surface.
A sharp whistling sound cut through the air.
"Shu-shu-shu!"
A dozen shuriken spun toward them.
With a swift movement, Obito dodged the incoming projectiles. His feet touched the ground for a split second before he sprang forward, his form flickering as he dashed toward Kakashi and the others.
"Earth Style: Stone Spear Jutsu!"
"Earth Style: Earth Wall!"
The Iwagakure shinobi, having learned from their comrades' previous encounters, avoided close-range combat. Instead, they launched jutsu from a distance, maintaining pressure on the group.
This was their territory, after all. They had no need to rush—the longer they dragged this out, the greater their advantage.
"Obito, over here!" Kakashi called out, signaling him.
Dodging wave after wave of attacks, Obito maneuvered through the battlefield, eventually reuniting with his teammates. He set Rin down beside Kakashi, taking a brief moment to catch his breath during the lull in combat.
His gaze shifted to a figure lying in a pool of blood not far away—Nagano.
Nagano's body was pierced by four or five stone spears, blood pooling beneath him. Despite his injuries, he was struggling to lift his head and look in their direction.
"Nagano..."
Obito felt his blood boil, his entire body trembling with emotion.
A chain deep within his mind rattled, threatening to snap. He could almost hear the sound of it breaking.
Nagano's lips moved, as if he were trying to speak. But his lungs had been punctured—no sound came out.
Obito focused on his friend's lips, reading his silent words.
"How many times... do I have to tell you...? I'm not... a damn sparrow..."
"And don't... feel bad for me... I hate... owing people..."
"You saved my life... so this is... me paying you back..."
Before Obito could finish deciphering the rest, another wave of enemy attacks forced them to move. The group retreated, losing sight of Nagano in the process.
Tears rolled down Obito's cheeks as he ran.
Why...? Why am I mourning that loudmouthed jerk?
"Boom!"
The chain within his mind shattered.
Obito clenched his fists, his voice shaking with rage.
"Nagano, you idiot! I refuse to let you pay me back! You hear me?! You're not allowed to die!"
Shikayu grabbed Obito's arm.
"Obito, calm down! Don't let them bait you!"
"They left Nagano alive on purpose—to lure us into a trap!"
Shikayu's voice wavered, his own pain barely contained. "I'm upset too. I want to save him. But we can't. He's already..."
Obito turned his head, his Sharingan glinting as he stared coldly at Shikayu.
"If we can't save him, then I'll just kill them all and avenge him."
Shikayu froze, his hand slipping from Obito's arm.
Obito's eyes glowed crimson, the tomoe within spinning faster than ever before.
Kakashi frowned. "Obito, this isn't the time to let your emotions take over..."
Even though Obito's rage had awakened the three-tomoe Sharingan, it wouldn't change their odds against three squads of Iwagakure shinobi.
Rin, standing close to Obito, looked up at him with concern.
"Obito-kun..."
Obito's gaze swept over his teammates. His voice was calm but firm.
"Listen to me. I'm not blinded by hatred—if anything, I've never been more focused."
"These Iwagakure shinobi are stalling. They're waiting for reinforcements. If we don't break through now, we'll all be trapped here."
Shikayu hesitated, then nodded gravely. "Obito's right. We have to act."
Ryoko, her voice trembling, asked, "But how? They outnumber us and have the advantage in strength. How do we break through?"
Obito removed his goggles and tossed them aside. His voice was steady.
"I'll attack first. I'll draw their attention. That'll be your chance to escape."
Kakashi's eyes narrowed. "I'll go with you."
Obito shook his head.
"No. You need to protect Rin and the others. Some of them will break off to chase you—I'm counting on you to keep everyone safe."
Kakashi opened his mouth to protest.
"But—"
"Enough with the arguments!" Obito snapped.
"Do you want all of us to die here?! I have a trump card up my sleeve—I'm not going down that easily. Trust me!"
Rin's voice cracked as she called out to him.
"Obito-kun..."
Obito turned to her, his expression softening for a moment.
"Rin, I'll see you on the other side. I'll bring Nagano back with me."
Then, looking back at Kakashi, he said, "Protect them, Kakashi. If you fail, I'll never forgive you."
For the first time, Kakashi saw a side of Obito he hadn't known—a determined, serious Obito. After a moment of hesitation, he nodded.
Obito gripped his short sword, his voice ringing out clearly.
"Get ready. In one minute, we move!"
As the others prepared to run, Obito turned to face the Iwagakure shinobi.
He took a deep breath and thought to himself:
[System, activate the Kamui Limited Card.]
[Kamui Limited Card: Upon activation of the three-tomoe Sharingan, unlock Mangekyō Sharingan—Kamui.]
[Confirm use?]
"Yes!"
A surge of warmth flooded into Obito's eyes.
The tomoe in his Sharingan shattered, replaced by the intricate pattern of a Mangekyō Sharingan.
Kamui.
Knowledge of its power flowed into his mind. Obito clenched his fists, a fierce grin spreading across his face.
"Incredible..."
"No wonder Kishimoto had to split these eyes. The dual Kamui is ridiculous."
With his short sword in hand, Obito stepped out of the shadows. Slowly, he began to pick up speed, breaking into a sprint toward the Iwagakure shinobi.
The enemy ninjas murmured among themselves.
"Even now, he's still coming at us? What guts..."
"True. For a brat, he's got some nerve."
Obito grinned darkly.
"I'm more than gutsy. I'm about to send you all straight to hell."
