Chapter 26: The Elemental Spirit
Spirit Realm
The lush, vibrant forest stretched endlessly, its towering trees bathed in golden sunlight that pierced the emerald canopy. The air was alive with the subtle hum of the Spirit Realm, an energy so pure and tranquil that Shinji couldn't help but feel a profound sense of peace.
In the heart of this serenity, Shinji and Taka stood facing one another, wooden practice swords in hand. Taka, with his characteristic smirk, moved fluidly, his strikes deliberate and precise. Though his avian features—sharp eyes and a beak-like nose—seemed comical at first glance, his skill with the blade was anything but.
"Your footing's all wrong again, Shinji!" Taka chided, deftly sidestepping Shinji's strike. "If this were a real fight, you'd already be birdseed."
Shinji gritted his teeth, adjusting his stance and lunging again. Their practice was intense yet strangely lighthearted, Taka frequently breaking the tension with witty remarks that left Shinji torn between laughter and frustration.
After several more exchanges, Taka finally called it. "Alright, alright, that's enough for now. You're getting better, but let's not kid ourselves—you're still a long way from beating me."
Shinji, panting and drenched in sweat, flopped onto a nearby boulder. Grabbing his waterskin, he took a long swig before speaking. "You never told me you were this good with a sword. Who taught you?"
Taka chuckled, sitting cross-legged on the ground and pulling out a rag to clean his blade. "My father, and his father before him. It's a family tradition. Of course, we've had centuries to perfect it."
Shinji raised an eyebrow. "Centuries?"
"Yeah, centuries. But that's a story for another time." Taka waved him off.
The two lapsed into a comfortable silence, the sounds of the forest filling the air. Birds chirped melodiously, and the distant rustling of leaves hinted at creatures moving unseen.
Breaking the silence, Taka looked up. "So, how are you finding the Spirit Realm so far?"
Shinji smiled faintly. "It's… peaceful. More than I expected. And definitely more relaxing than the chaos of my world."
Taka laughed, his voice echoing through the trees. "Well, I'm glad you're not hating it. It's not every day we get a visitor from another dimension."
Shinji stood, stretching out his sore muscles. "Where to next?"
Taka pulled out a map, spreading it across his lap. The parchment shimmered with faint ethereal light, marking landmarks in intricate, glowing script. "Alright, let's see. We need to head to the Golden Forest, but to get there, we'll have to cross the Albek River. Shouldn't be too far from here."

As they made their way through the forest, Taka took the opportunity to explain more about the Spirit Realm. Most of it was trivial—random facts about flora, fauna, and the occasional bizarre anecdote—but Shinji found it oddly endearing.
At one point, Shinji broke the flow of chatter with a question that had been on his mind. "Taka, how does someone make a contract with a spiritual creature?"
Taka glanced back, his beak-like nose twitching thoughtfully. "Depends on the creature. Spirits here are as diverse as your world's animals. Some are aggressive, others peaceful, and some… well, some are just plain weird."
Shinji raised an eyebrow. "Weird how?"
"You ever see a ten-foot slug that demands you dance before it agrees to help you?" Taka deadpanned.
Shinji blinked. "That's… oddly specific."
Taka shrugged. "Anyway, most spirits like trials. It could be a game, a fight, or even a riddle. But they all want to see if you're worth their time. And trust me, some of them are really picky."
As they walked, Shinji noticed Taka hesitating, as if debating whether to say more. "Out with it, Taka."
"Alright, alright. There's one more thing. Did I mention there are humans in this realm?"
Shinji froze mid-step. "Wait. What? Humans? Here?"
Taka scratched the back of his head, clearly embarrassed. "Didn't I tell you? My bad. Yeah, there are humans here, though they're… not quite like you."
Shinji crossed his arms. "Explain."
"Well, they're called the Aethers. They look like humans but with pointy ears, and biologically, they're… different. They don't have chakra like you. Instead, they draw energy—prana—from the environment around them. It's like breathing to them."
Shinji frowned. "So, they're not really human."
"Exactly. And let me tell you, they're a prideful lot. Arrogant, bossy, always acting like they're above everyone else. Most spirits hate them, and for good reason."
Shinji processed this in silence, filing the information away for later.

The Albek River
The forest opened up, revealing a wide river that sparkled like liquid crystal under the sunlight. The sound of rushing water was calming, yet there was an otherworldly hum beneath it, as though the river itself was alive.
As they approached, Shinji's eyes caught movement in the trees. A small creature flitted through the air, its form shimmering with an ethereal glow.
"Taka," Shinji whispered, pointing. "What is that?"
Taka crouched beside him, peering through the foliage. "An elemental spirit. And a wind one at that. Rare creatures, these. Looks like this one's just a newborn."
The spirit was breathtaking. Its form was delicate and wispy, almost translucent, with wings like gossamer threads reflecting every color of the spectrum. It moved with a childlike joy, giggling softly as it darted from branch to branch, scattering leaves like confetti.
Shinji felt an inexplicable pull toward it. "Do you think… I could make a contract with it?"
Taka raised an eyebrow. "You? With an elemental spirit? Bold move, kid. But hey, if you're serious, this might just be your chance."
As Shinji continued to watch the spirit, his determination grew. This could be the start of something extraordinary.
