Happy reading!
It has been six months since joining the Anbu training camp and two months since my initiation into the Anbu forces. Now, at nine years old, I have been given a wolf mask and the code name "Wolf." The four-month boot camp was grueling, led by an Anbu captain with the code name "Jackal." He was a sadist in every sense of the word. The boot camp was designed to break us both physically and mentally, pushing us beyond our limits.
Initially, I wondered if this was some sort of revenge plan orchestrated by the higher-ups—a comically cruel joke at our expense. If someone, by virtue of genetics, age, or experience, seemed to be doing well, they were immediately removed from base training and subjected to even more grueling exercises. It ensured that everyone was in the same state of misery.
One particularly brutal training session involved a forced march through the dense forests surrounding our camp. We were given minimal supplies and had to navigate through rough terrain while avoiding traps set by our instructors. I remember Jackal's voice ringing in my ears as he barked orders, pushing us to our breaking points. At one point, we were ambushed by senior Anbu members, testing our ability to react under pressure. The intensity of the training was relentless, and I often collapsed from exhaustion at the end of each day.
During hand-to-hand combat drills, we were paired off and pitted against each other in brutal sparring matches. I was frequently matched against older, more experienced recruits. The first time I faced a particularly skilled opponent, I was knocked to the ground repeatedly. But each time I got up, determined to prove my worth. Jackal watched impassively, his eyes cold and calculating, as if measuring how much more I could endure before breaking. Through sheer determination, I began to hold my own, earning a nod of approval from Jackal.
I was taken off the standard ninjutsu training and put into advanced training due to my exceptional water manipulation skills. I was paired with an Anbu member code-named "Shark," an authority in water manipulation. His abilities with water were humbling. What he could do with water was something I hadn't even thought possible. Shark demonstrated techniques that seemed almost magical—creating intricate structures from water, forming powerful defensive barriers, and attacking with razor-sharp water blades. If I hadn't seen Kisame Hoshigaki, I wouldn't have believed it.
In fuinjutsu, I was moved under the tutelage of an Anbu member code-named "Key," who was the head of barrier techniques. Key was a master of sealing, and his knowledge seemed limitless. He taught me complex seals that could enhance chakra flow, create unbreakable barriers, and even imprison powerful enemies. One day, he showed me how to create a seal that could temporarily nullify an opponent's chakra. The intricate patterns and precision required were daunting, but under Key's patient guidance, I managed to grasp the basics.
Survival training was another critical component of our boot camp. We were dropped in the wilderness with nothing but our wits and a kunai. We had to find food, build shelters, and avoid detection from Anbu trackers. One night, while huddled in a makeshift shelter, I heard the rustling of leaves and realized an Anbu tracker was near. I held my breath, staying completely still, as the tracker passed by. The tension was palpable, and the experience taught me the importance of stealth and patience.
We also underwent intense torture training, designed to teach us how to withstand and resist interrogation techniques. The methods were harsh and unforgiving, ranging from sensory deprivation to physical pain. I learned to control my breathing, focus my mind, and endure the unendurable. The mental fortitude I developed during these sessions was invaluable, teaching me to compartmentalize pain and fear.
Our training also included mastering the Anbu sign language, standard formation fighting styles, and the Anbu standard sword style. The holistic approach to training ensured that no area was left untouched. The areas I thought were my strengths were pushed to new heights, and those I had neglected were honed to a fine edge. My genjutsu skills, for instance, improved in leaps and bounds. Previously, I only had limited resources in genjutsu—low-level techniques that Kosuke had taught me. But now, with access to advanced training, I made the most of it, learning how to weave intricate illusions that could deceive even the most perceptive foes.
During the four-month boot camp, I received a proper stipend but had to stay in the Anbu facility. I missed my new home and my friends. Unlike high-profile individuals, there were few people who would miss me and ask questions. Joining the Anbu was a secret affair. Consequently, my training was not in the Konoha Anbu facility but on the outskirts of Hi no Kuni, ensuring our anonymity and the secrecy of our operations.
The isolation was difficult, but it also forged a bond among the recruits. We became a tightly-knit unit, relying on each other for support and camaraderie. The experience was transformative, stripping away our individual weaknesses and building us into formidable Anbu operatives. As the initiation into the Anbu forces approached, I felt a mix of excitement and trepidation, knowing that I was about to embark on a path that few ever tread.
The lessons I learned during those six months were invaluable. I understood the true meaning of discipline, endurance, and loyalty. The experiences and skills I gained would serve me well in the challenges ahead, and I was determined to uphold the honor and responsibilities of being an Anbu.
At my initiation into ANBU, I received a seal on my left bicep, a spiral tattoo that symbolized my membership and acted as a protective measure to prevent the disclosure of ANBU secrets. The seal had intricate patterns woven into it, designed to enhance my abilities and ensure my loyalty.
I was also given an ANBU mask with the designation 'Wolf.' The mask was a pristine white with black markings around the eyes, and a wolf's snout painted on it. It felt surreal, wearing the mask that marked me as one of Konoha's elite shinobi. The mask was not just a symbol of status but also a tool to maintain the secrecy of our identities.
The initiation ceremony was conducted by the ANBU Commander, known only as Dragon. He stood tall, his presence commanding respect. His mask was unique, with dragon motifs, symbolizing his authority.
As we stood in formation, Dragon began his speech, his voice resonating with authority and strength.
"Welcome, new recruits, to the ranks of ANBU. You have been chosen not just for your skills, but for your unwavering loyalty and dedication to Konoha. In ANBU, we are the unseen blade, the silent protectors of our village. Our identities remain a secret, known only to the Lord Hokage, myself, and your immediate team, which is optional for disclosure.
"From this day forward, you will operate in the shadows, carrying out missions that are critical to the safety and security of our village. You will face dangers that others cannot even imagine, and you will do so without hesitation. Remember, your actions reflect not only on you but on the entire village. Honor, duty, and loyalty—these are the pillars upon which ANBU stands.
"As you wear these masks, know that you are now part of something greater than yourselves. You are the shield that protects Konoha and the sword that strikes down its enemies. Serve with pride, and remember that failure is not an option. We are ANBU, and we are eternal."
As Dragon finished his speech, the Lord Hokage stepped forward. With a calm and composed demeanor, he personally handed each of us our masks. When he handed me the 'Wolf' mask, he gave a small nod. It was a gesture that spoke volumes.
The ceremony was private, with no one else present, reinforcing the secrecy of our identities and the importance of our roles. As I stood there, holding the mask in my hands, I felt a surge of pride and determination. I was now part of ANBU, ready to serve and protect my village from the shadows.
The weight of the mask and the seal on my bicep were constant reminders of the oath I had taken and the path I had chosen. As I donned the 'Wolf' mask for the first time, I knew that my journey had just begun. The challenges ahead would be great, but with the support of my comrades and the guidance of my superiors, I was ready to face them head-on.
Along with the mask, we received a coded parchment that detailed our team assignments and the location where we were to meet them. I was placed in Agis, one of the most celebrated teams in ANBU. I had graduated in the top five of my batch, a feat that filled me with both pride and anticipation. I had a week before I had to report in.
The next morning, a few friends I had made in ANBU and I set off to Konoha. It was refreshing to see the village again, the longest I had been away from it. The next six days were spent chilling with my friends and acquaintances. The cover story for my absence was a prolonged undercover mission, which made sense given my age; at nine years old, I was a prime candidate for infiltration missions.
Kosuke looked at me with a knowing smile when I returned, but he didn't say much, just offered his congratulations. I wanted to relax during these six days, but the training hammered into my head made me wake up at the same time and start my training routine. Slacking off didn't feel right.
On the sixth day, I went to the ANBU HQ, a secret base hidden in the middle of the village. The entrance was cleverly concealed within a nondescript building, and to access it, I had to get my tattoo scanned. The base was an underground labyrinth, filled with high-tech equipment and training rooms. It was a perfect blend of traditional shinobi aesthetics and modern technological advancements, with stone walls adorned with ancient seals and state-of-the-art monitors displaying mission data.
After passing through the entrance, I headed to the inventory registration department. There, my chakra signature was added to the access list and coded into Konoha's barrier, giving me entry into the village without using the main gate. This was essential since ANBU missions were secret and not registered in the main log like standard missions.
Next, I went to the inventory storage. I got a standard refill of supplies along with the ANBU uniform, which had anonymity seals inscribed on it. I also received a full inventory of weapons and a new tanto. My old tanto had become very thin due to constant water sharpening, so getting a new one felt like a great relief. My somewhat miserly heart felt joy at the free yet premium supplies. According to Mizuki, I was the greatest miser in all of Hi no Kuni—blasphemy!
At exactly 11:00 AM, I reached the meeting point to report. I was met by five ANBU members, and I immediately recognized the commander. He was legendary in the ANBU corps, code-named Raven. His presence was intimidating, even through his raven-themed mask.
Raven's voice cut through the air like a kunai. "Introduce yourself."
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my composure. "Naruto Uzumaki, code name Wolf, reporting for duty, sir!"
Raven's eyes narrowed, and his voice grew even more commanding. "From now on, you will refer to me as Lord Raven. Is that understood?"
I nodded quickly, feeling a bit nervous. "Yes, sir!"
Raven's voice turned sharp. "What did you say?"
I corrected myself immediately, standing at attention. "Yes, Lord Raven-sama!"
There was a moment of silence, the tension hanging thick in the air. Then, unexpectedly, Raven laughed, a sound that seemed out of place coming from such a fearsome figure. "Alright, Wolf, as part of your initiation, I have a special task for you."
I stood at attention, waiting for the command.
Raven continued, "I want you to sneak into the Jonin lounge and replace their tea with a special concoction I've prepared." He handed me a small flask. "It's harmless, just a little..ehem... spicy."
The other ANBU members were gravely looking at me from behind their masks. I realized this was part of their way of testing me. Lord Raven added, "If you fail, you'll be going back to the barracks." I suddenly remembered what happened last time, when Kakashi sent me to the reserves. I was panicking inside.
"Yes, Lord Raven-sama," I replied, taking the flask. "Consider it done."
With that, I made my way to the Jonin lounge, my heart pounding with the weight of the task and the fear of being sent back to the barracks. I couldn't afford to fail. As I moved through the village, I relied on the stealth training I had received in ANBU. Every shadow and corner became my ally, allowing me to slip past villagers and shinobi without being noticed.
When I reached the Jonin lounge, I paused outside the entrance, taking a deep breath to steady my nerves. I couldn't afford to make a single mistake. Recalling the layout of the lounge, I formed a plan in my mind. The teapot was usually kept on a small table near the window, easily accessible but also visible from several angles.
I waited until a group of Jonin exited the lounge, their conversation and laughter fading as they walked away. This was my chance. I slipped inside, sticking close to the wall to avoid detection. My senses were on high alert, every creak of the floorboards and rustle of paper making my heart race.
I spotted the teapot on the table, just as I had anticipated. Moving quickly but silently, I approached it. My hands shook slightly as I uncorked the flask Raven had given me. Carefully, I poured the contents into the teapot, the liquid mixing seamlessly with the tea. I wiped the flask and the teapot handle with a cloth to ensure there were no traces of my presence.
Just as I finished, I heard footsteps approaching. Panic surged through me, but I forced myself to stay calm. I ducked behind a nearby chair, holding my breath as two Jonin entered the lounge, chatting casually. They moved towards the teapot, and I felt a surge of adrenaline. I couldn't be caught now, not when I was so close to completing the task.
The Jonin poured themselves cups of tea, and I took the opportunity to slip out of the lounge, moving as quickly and quietly as I could. Once outside, I didn't stop until I was a safe distance away, my heart still racing. The fear of being sent back to the barracks had been a powerful motivator, and the relief of having succeeded was overwhelming.
Returning to the meeting point, I found Raven and the others waiting. I stood at attention, trying to keep my expression neutral. "Mission accomplished, Lord Raven-sama."
Raven nodded, clearly pleased. "Good work," he said, then burst out laughing. "Oh man, you fell for it like many before you. This initiation prank is a tradition all the seniors give the initiates. Make sure if you become Agis captain, you maintain this sacred tradition. Now, Wolf and everyone, remove your masks."
The abrupt shift in tone caught me off guard. I hesitated, wondering if this was some kind of test. The other ANBU members looked at each other, and then, one by one, removed their masks. I followed suit, revealing our faces to each other.
Raven, still chuckling, removed his own mask. "I'm Shisui. Shisui Uchiha."
I was taken aback by the sudden change in his demeanor. From the legendary and intimidating Raven to the approachable Shisui, it was a drastic shift. He noticed my surprise and grinned.
"Don't be so stiff, Wolf," he said with a friendly smirk. "We're a team now. We work hard, but we also look out for each other."
The atmosphere lightened immediately. Shisui's warm personality set a different tone than I had expected. Despite the rigorous training and the seriousness of our missions, there was a sense of camaraderie and belonging.
Shisui's voice became more serious. "Welcome to Agis, one of the most original Anbu teams in ANBU. We expect nothing but the best from you. We have a great legacy to carry out. My father, Kagami Uchiha, was the first captain, and I am the 16th captain. We are family here. Remember, we support each other. You're not alone."
The gravity of his words sunk in. This was my new reality, and I was determined to give it my all. The journey ahead was daunting, but with the guidance and support of my team. Since Kakashi disqualified me three years ago, I had never had a permanent team to call my own. Now, standing among these skilled ANBU members, I finally had it. I belonged. The sense of camaraderie and shared purpose filled a void I hadn't even realized was there. This was more than just a team; it was a family, and I was ready to give everything to protect and support them.
