Chapter 431: Chapter 431: The Daimyo Also Started to Panic
The Third Hokage looked as though all his energy and spirit had drained away, clearly shaken by the events. However, being of the older generation, such a shock was something he could handle.
After the Third Hokage left, Shinki turned to Uchiha Fugaku and waved casually: "Fugaku, please take care of the body."
"?"
Uchiha Fugaku blinked in confusion. It wasn't that he was unwilling—on the contrary, he would gladly handle Shimura Danzo's remains. If Shinki had wanted to pulverize the body into meat paste, Fugaku would have been delighted to assist.
But... that wasn't what Shinki had implied earlier.
"Master, didn't you just say..."
Shinki had mentioned making Shimura Danzo into a puppet and placing it in front of the Hokage's office building to vent the villagers' anger. Now, he was asking Fugaku to handle the body.
Was this for real, or just a joke?
Are you really this dense?
Shikashin, observing from nearby, sighed and spoke firmly: "Uchiha Fugaku, do you really think he'd turn Shimura Danzo's body into a puppet and put it on public display? That would be pure chaos."
Hiashi Hyuga, arms crossed behind his back, nodded slightly. "Lord Shinki detested Danzo, but to desecrate the body publicly would tarnish his reputation. Killing is one thing; humiliation of the dead is another. Such actions would spread like wildfire and cause damage to his name."
As long as the act wasn't exposed, it didn't matter what was done privately. However, making a puppet out of the body and placing it at the Hokage's office was too extreme. While it might satisfy some anger, it would ultimately backfire and ruin his image.
"I understand. Thank you for the advice, seniors," Fugaku said as he decisively burned the body on the spot.
Just as he was about to bury the ashes, Nara Shikashin stopped him.
"Pack them in something and send them to the Hokage."
"Yes."
Uchiha Fugaku didn't question the order. Whatever the Third Hokage might think about receiving the ashes wasn't his concern. Nara Shikashin had spoken, and Fugaku simply obeyed.
Technically, Shikashin had no authority over Fugaku, as the Uchiha clan head held a higher position. However, Shikashin's close relationship with Shinki and his respected status made his instructions difficult to ignore.
"I'll help," Hiashi Hyuga offered, not letting Fugaku handle the matter alone. He even produced a small box, carefully placing the ashes inside before delivering them to the Third Hokage.
Not far from the secret passage leading back to the village, Hiashi and Fugaku encountered the Third Hokage waiting solemnly on the path. Nara Shikashin had already gone in another direction.
"Hokage-sama, these are the remaining ashes," Fugaku said, handing over the box.
The Third Hokage's eyes reddened as he took it.
Beyond their professional relationship, he and Shimura Danzo had trained and competed together since childhood. Their bond, though strained by the years, had been genuine. He had purposely waited here for Danzo's remains, not trusting anyone else with them.
As for Shinki's earlier words about making Danzo into a puppet, the Third Hokage dismissed them. Shinki might despise Danzo, but he wouldn't act in a way that damaged his own reputation. Such actions wouldn't serve anyone, least of all the village or its next Hokage, Tsunade.
"You've worked hard. Go and rest," the Third Hokage said quietly, his voice tinged with fatigue. He left swiftly with the urn, intending to find a secluded spot to bury it and finally put his relationship with Danzo to rest.
Meanwhile, Tsunade had reached the daimyo's mansion after traveling tirelessly. Upon her arrival, she went directly to the palace to meet the daimyo.
"Oh, little Tsunade, you're here! Quickly, prepare a feast..." The daimyo greeted her warmly, his face lighting up with enthusiasm. Despite his cheerful demeanor, there was an undercurrent of nervousness—he was worried his actions might have been exposed.
In theory, the daimyo was untouchable. The five great ninja villages adhered to an unspoken rule: the daimyo were not to be harmed. But rules were one thing, and reality another. A ninja backed into a corner could become unpredictable, and Tsunade was no exception.
"Forget it. I'm not in the mood," Tsunade interrupted coldly, her expression stern.
The daimyo's smile faltered. He tried to defend himself. "Tsunade-chan, I don't understand what you're saying—"
Tsunade cut him off sharply. "Daimyo, we've known each other for a long time, so let me be blunt. What you did to the Third Hokage went too far. I can understand your anger, but this has gone beyond reason."
"Hehehe..." The daimyo forced a laugh, feeling a pang of guilt. He tried to feign ignorance. "Tsunade-chan, I really don't—"
"Do you want the fake assassination plot to turn into a real one?" Tsunade asked, her tone icy.
The daimyo froze, startled. Even the suggestion of an assassination—fake or not—was enough to shake him. Such warnings weren't to be taken lightly.
"No, no, of course not," he stammered, now genuinely afraid.
"Good," Tsunade said curtly. "You pushed things too far. Both Konoha and the daimyo's office need stability, not petty grudges."
Seeing that excuses wouldn't work, the daimyo quickly shifted his approach, lowering his voice to plead. "Tsunade, don't misunderstand. It was just Sarutobi Hiruzen! He made me angry, cutting off my funds for a while. Then he had the nerve to plot with the Sand Village behind my back! Anyone would've been furious, don't you think?"
Tsunade massaged her temples, feeling a headache coming on. "Enough. What's done is done. Let's focus on moving forward. Both the daimyo's office and the village need stability to develop."
The daimyo nodded quickly, seizing the opportunity. "Then, little Tsunade, how about we—"
