-------------------------------------------------------------

As the burly man's voice fell, he slowly extended his arm. Under the pale moonlight, countless pitch-black threads began to crawl out from his arm!

The slender black threads wriggled and twisted as if sniffing out the scent of living beings. Their tips aimed directly at the Iwa-nin sitting paralyzed on the ground.

"What… what are those things?!" one of the Iwa-nin exclaimed in terror, his eyes wide with fear.

Before he could finish his words—

"Whoosh!" "Whoosh!" "Whoosh!"

A sharp sound pierced the air as the dense black threads suddenly shot out, plunging straight into his body.

"Tanben!"

The other Iwa-nin, frozen in place, cried out their comrade's name in horror.

But Tanben couldn't respond. Before he had the chance to react, dozens of black threads had already pierced his body. Blood gushed from his mouth as he stared in disbelief at the horrifying threads protruding from him.

The threads wriggled slightly, causing his head to snap back, his face twisted in excruciating pain. He gasped and wheezed like a broken bellows.

"Kill me… kill me now!" Tanben begged in a trembling voice, his face contorted in agony.

Hearing their comrade's screams, the Iwa-nin, who had been paralyzed with fear, suddenly erupted in a frenzy. They leaped to their feet and charged at the burly man.

"I'll kill you monsters!!"

The burly man, his oily green eyes glowing faintly, glanced at them and rasped,

"Worthless creatures. Your heads aren't even worth a single coin. The only use you have is to feed Earth Grudge Fear."

As his voice trailed off, he remained motionless.

When the Iwa-nin were about to reach him, the fabric at his chest suddenly opened, revealing a mass of writhing black threads. They surged toward the attackers like a monstrous, snarling beast.

"Squelch!" "Squelch!" "Squelch!"

Dozens of black threads pierced the Iwa-nin from different angles. They looked down at the blood oozing from their wounds, their expressions frozen in shock before twisting into agony.

"Ahhh!" "Ahhh!" "Ahhh!"

Amid the echoing screams, blood sprayed onto the ground under the pale moonlight. One by one, the Iwa-nin collapsed, lifeless.

The black threads, like nimble hands, rummaged through the corpses. In no time, they extracted vibrant red hearts, greedily consuming them like wild beasts.

"Glug." "Glug."

Amidst the eerie sounds, the blood on the ground and corpses was drained entirely. The black threads, now satisfied, twisted together and slowly retreated into the burly man's body.

The burly man cast an indifferent glance at the desiccated corpses, then strode forward along a massive trench.

In the distance, Ulquiorra stood quietly, his expression calm as if the carnage had nothing to do with him. He turned and began to walk away.

Just then, his steps faltered slightly. He turned to look back.

From the shadowy forest emerged the burly man who had just dealt with the fleeing Iwa-nin.

Ulquiorra's expression remained calm as he spoke softly.

"Kakuzu, did you take care of the remaining ones?"

Kakuzu's face was equally stoic as he rasped,

"Just a bunch of scraps. There wasn't anything valuable on them. They're all dead now."

Ulquiorra nodded faintly and turned back, speaking calmly.

"Let's go. We've eliminated part of the Iwa-nin's forces. Next, we'll assist Nawaki in staging the performance."

Kakuzu followed closely, his expression indifferent. He rasped,

"What a shame. Let's hope that guy doesn't mess it up and waste Lord Aizen's expectations."

Kakuzu had previously worked with Nawaki on missions. One was silent and reserved, the other annoyingly talkative.

Despite their contrasting personalities and occasional minor conflicts, Kakuzu grudgingly acknowledged Nawaki's strength.

Hearing Kakuzu's words, Ulquiorra glanced at him and said softly,

"Nawaki mentioned to Lord Aizen that he wanted you to play this role. It was his request."

Kakuzu paused, momentarily stunned. He fell silent as memories from years ago surfaced in his mind.

On a desolate, barren land, under a pale sky, sparse and withered tree trunks bent in the wind as if abandoned by the world.

Walking along, Kakuzu's dead, lifeless eyes fell upon the trees. For a moment, they reflected a hint of his past self.

"Hey, Kakuzu! You were defeated by my grandfather. Don't be so gloomy. Let's chat to pass the time. Otherwise, this journey will be so dull!"

Beside him, a young, brown-haired boy with a face full of admiration chattered endlessly about his grandfather, the First Hokage.

Hearing this, Kakuzu briefly paused, his face darkened. He ignored the boy and quickened his pace.

Seeing this, the boy sighed and muttered to himself.

"Sigh… Why did you think attacking my grandfather was a good idea? If I grow up a bit more, even I could beat you. That was basically suicide!"

Hearing this, Kakuzu stopped walking.

The boy, curious, turned to look at him. Kakuzu's hoarse voice finally broke the silence.

"Even knowing it was suicide, we still charge forward. Isn't that the fate of all ninja? Isn't it the same in Konoha?"

The boy wanted to retort but found himself speechless.

Kakuzu's green eyes gleamed faintly as he continued.

"I followed the village's orders, carried out that meaningless assassination. But when I survived, they saw me as an outcast…"

Raising his head slightly, Kakuzu's oily green eyes stared at the sky as he rasped,

"Ninja… If you don't die for your mission, you're labeled a rogue and executed. They even called me a criminal."

As Kakuzu spoke, the boy's expression grew heavy.

Having grown up in Konoha, the boy had never encountered such cruelty. But he could imagine the bitterness of being treated like this after failing a mission.

Kakuzu lowered his head and walked forward, his hoarse voice lingering in the air.

"So, to survive… I killed them all."

The boy stood in silence, watching Kakuzu's retreating back, which exuded a faint air of desolation.

Everything Kakuzu had done was just to live. If he harbored hatred, it was for this world.

Why did the village he once risked his life to protect now wish him dead? Why had the once-kind faces turned hostile and hateful?

Trusting no one, Kakuzu found solace only in money.

The boy ran to catch up and, instead of rambling like before, softly said,

"Don't worry. Once Big Brother establishes the new world, all of this will be in the past."

Kakuzu's steps faltered slightly.

At that moment, Ulquiorra's calm voice broke through the silence. "Kakuzu, Nawaki is ahead. It's your turn to complete this performance."
