Chapter 182: Ch182. You d...!?
After Hinata and Ino both headed in different directions, Hinata ran toward the place where the Oto ninja were currently besieging the western wall.
She tried to help wherever she could on her way, throwing needles left and right as long as the intervention didn't necessitate using chakra or slowing down.
Sometimes her needles helped the defenders or saved the poor, defenseless civilian victims. But most of the time? No matter Hinata's peerless accuracy. No matter that she could nail a bullseye with a thrown needle even when her target was one hundred meters away, and that was with her raw strength alone, without using any booster like lightning chakra.
She was in a hurry, and enemy ninjas were not wooden posts. Oh, she would have still managed to hit wherever she wanted, but real ninjas had this pesky ability to dodge or block.
Very annoying. Capable of causing emotional damage to the thrower.
Because of that, her interventions helped far less than she would have liked, and she could only grit her teeth whenever a ninja dodged or blocked her long-range attack before proceeding to kill his victim anyway.
But it had to do for now. The evacuation was progressing, and that meant more and more Konoha ninjas started to appear on the streets after their assigned locations were cleared of civilians. They started helping their comrades or the civilian stragglers who were still not evacuated, slowly pushing the invaders back.
Without fast reinforcements, the invaders would have a very hard time very soon. And it was Hinata's job to ensure these reinforcements would not arrive.
With determination in her eyes, she slightly sped up as she ran across the rooftops until she started hearing screams, explosions, and cries of despair, pain, and suffering as she neared the wall.
Hinata's eyes narrowed. Even on Konoha's side of the wall, there were some Oto ninjas, most likely the stronger infiltrators, engaging Konoha ninjas in an attempt to help their comrades on the other side of the wall to cross it.
Pulsing her chakra, Hinata instantly held ten needles between her fingers, and since she was finally at the wall, she no longer decided to limit her chakra usage. Mopping these saboteur wannabes was going to help anyway.
Konoha ninjas had to split their attention both ways, outside and inside, because of them. And while Hinata knew it was likely that more of these infiltrated Oto ninjas would show up later from within the walls, she decided that was a problem for later.
For now... Small arcs of electricity zapped between the needles and Hinata's fingers, giving the needles a slight coating of lightning chakra before she threw all ten of them at once.
Like ten extremely fast, blue shooting stars, the needles zoomed through the air and hit ten Oto ninjas locked in combat with Konoha ninjas, nailing them mostly in the necks, backs, and one Oto ninja even had great instincts and managed to jump as he realized the threat. Unfortunately for him, Hinata aimed at his back, and as he jumped up, the needle nailed him in the ass, which still gave his opponent the necessary distraction to finish the poor sod.
This time, Hinata was less than thirty meters away from her targets, and she used lightning chakra. This time, she hadn't missed even once, and even those hit in the back died as the lightning-clad needles burned through their bodies, creating small holes straight through them.
As the ten Oto ninjas suddenly died, the Konoha defenders became startled, but they quickly snapped out of it as Hinata threw another ten needles, killing ten more Oto ninjas.
'That should do the trick.' Hinata thought as she ran through the battlefield, passing several Konoha chunin at speeds that made it difficult for them to react. She arrived at the base of the wall and, without slowing down, she started running up.
The twenty dead Oto ninjas gave the fifty-ish Konoha defenders a distinct numerical advantage over the last thirty-ish Oto infiltrators. Hinata deemed that good enough of an assist for the Konoha ninjas to quickly mop up the remainder.
She had a bigger fish to fry.
Hopping over the stone railing, Hinata landed on the top of the wall and instantly had to duck under a stray shuriken that wasn't even thrown at her. She simply happened to accidentally be in its path.
Instantly straightening after the kunai flew over her, a nearby Oto ninja instantly jumped at her, swinging a kunai at her neck. But Hinata was faster. With a smooth half-step, she invaded the man's guard, and her palm slammed into his chest. His heart ruptured, and the man didn't even know when he died, as his corpse flew over the stone railing, hitting another Oto ninja who had just managed to finally climb up the wall.
Both the corpse and the now screaming Oto ninja were hurled through the air, straight toward the ground, where they went splat upon impact.
Konoha walls were very tall.
They had to be. Ninjas could wall walk, after all.
That disabused the other Oto ninjas from attacking Hinata and gave her a second to properly take stock of the situation. It... wasn't good.
Hinata frowned. Ren always said that the existence of ninjas and the conflicts between them were better than the alternative. But as Hinata saw all the dead and dying ninjas, all the corpses strewn all over the top of the wall or the field underneath it. The pile gathered at its base, discarded like garbage. Hinata's gaze grew sad.
... This was one thing Hinata disagreed with Ren about. Logically, she understood that a conflict between a few thousand ninjas was still less bloody than a conflict between hundreds of thousands of normal civilians.
But that was in theory. On paper. The killing around her? That was very much real. And she didn't see anything 'better' in all the death around her. It was still death.
There were over a thousand and seven hundred Oto ninjas still alive from the initial... two thousand? Hinata didn't rightly know. She didn't have the time to properly count. But that was her rough estimate.
The Konoha side, however, only had four hundred? Three hundred and fifty defenders? There were probably five hundred of them at the start.
Still, Konoha's side was outnumbered. Only thanks to the fact that the Oto ninjas were nothing spectacular, and the high ground of the impenetrable wall, did they still resist the charge.
It couldn't be more obvious to Hinata that their resistance was not going to last. Suddenly, it made a horrible amount of sense why they only sent fifty ninjas to deal with fifty enemy infiltrators. They couldn't spare more, and yet, the infiltrators simply had to be stopped.
The reinforcements...
Hinata inwardly sighed. They were not going to make it in time. The northern and southern defense points were just breached, Oto and Suna ninjas flooding into Konoha through the breaches.
The ANBU and other ninja had their hands full as they were now fighting in the streets of Konoha.
Really, bolstering the Country of Fire's ninja border guard teams just in case somebody tried to invade definitely did not help Konoha's current position.
Hinata only knew about that because she heard Ren quietly cursing a certain Elder from their village who had sent all his supposedly nonexistent, secret special ANBU forces to bolster the western borders before he took an abrupt vacation to the Capital of the Land of Fire. To promote connections with the nobility... or something.
Hinata didn't exactly know what had Ren so angry back then, and she didn't bother to ask, but now she couldn't help but admit that something was very fishy about the lower number of ninja present in Konoha during this invasion.
How the hell did this big of a force get through all the supposedly bolstered border guard teams with sensors and detection seals?
All that flashed through Hinata's mind within three seconds as she assessed the situation. By the end of it, she was already moving, determined to end this.
Stepping on the stone railing separating the top of the wall from the side outside of Konoha, Hinata jumped high into the air, soaring above the army of Oto ninjas.
Closing her eyes, arcs of lightning flared to life around her as she funneled her chakra out of her tenketsu all over her body. Using some principles of Kaiten, Hinata spun in the air, the lightning following her movements as it wrapped around her, creating a spinning ball out of its crackling arcs.
She spun faster, and faster, the sheer concentration of lightning around her keeping her suspended in the air without falling. Barely two seconds later, as most ninja on the battlefield noticed her and watched the happenings with trepidation, Hinata had gained sufficient spinning speed.
Some of the arcs of lightning couldn't stay in the ball and inevitably peeled off before raining onto the Oto ninja in Hinata's proximity, striking and frying them by the dozens, while those at a safe distance could only watch in horror.
But the relief of the Oto spectators was short-lived.
Just as they thought they were out of the technique's range, an unending rain of lightning-enhanced needles started to zap and swish through the air too fast for most to track with their eyes.
And just as the first victims started to die or scream in pain, depending on where the needles struck and burned holes through them, the real horror started.
The needles began to explode.
Swiftly, the already loud, pulsing sound of crackling needles swishing through the air was completely deafened by the symphony of unceasing thunderous explosions.
Seconds ticked by, and Hinata had thrown dozens... a hundred, five hundred, thousand... An entire minute later, Hinata had emptied her reserve of two thousand needles in her wrist seals.
The field in front of Konoha's wall was full of craters, the Oto army reduced to burnt and shattered body pieces strewn all around. And those were actually the lucky ones who still had some pieces of their body to bury after all the explosions.
Maybe if there were some capable Jonin... maybe they could survive the onslaught of Hinata's technique. But Oto ninjas were not exactly an elite force.
Even those climbing the wall were not spared as Hinata's needles rained indiscriminately on the wall too, leaving the rocky surface shattered in many places, revealing the sturdy but still slightly cracked Hashirama wood of its inward structure.
Only a few Oto ninjas atop the wall didn't die. But seeing their 'comrades' reduced to cinders in the thundering explosions sapped all will to resist out of them.
By the end of it, they knelt on the ground in surrender with empty eyes as they realized they had no chance of victory left.
Their army was gone. Over a thousand and six hundred-ish ninjas, dead. All within a minute.
Konoha had a new Yellow Butcher.
Hinata's spinning slowed down, and the crackling lightning was dispersed. When it halted completely, Hinata kicked against the air and did a backward somersault, landing on the top of the wall under the awed and fearful gazes of Konoha ninjas.
Tilting her head, Hinata blinked.
The Konoha ninjas near her... shuffled to the side and nervously avoided her gaze. She even heard some of them gulp in fear.
"Well... who is the commanding officer here?" Hinata shouted, feeling a bit exasperated at their reaction.
Honestly, she was extremely tired. Spinning at those speeds while using her Byakugan to perceive the surroundings...
Keeping the field of spinning lightning chakra around her body at a certain intensity...
Unsealing and imbuing her needles with lightning chakra before inscribing exploding seals on them with her chakra as she threw them at the rate of around thirty-three per second, give or take...
Hinata's muscles, especially the ones on her wrists, hands, and fingers, felt like lead. Her nerves were slightly twitching all over her body. Her arms were nearly shivering.
And for that first second when she landed on her feet, she felt as if she was going to fall down before she regained her balance and supported her body with her chakra.
She... was fine.
Nothing was damaged. But this technique was brutal on her body. Even Kaiten spun barely at a third of the speed of that technique.
On the bright side, thanks to her Byakugan, all that spinning hadn't made her even a bit dizzy.
Her chakra pool was once again half empty, and the rapid decrease in her chakra made Hinata feel as if she had just run nonstop for a whole day at her top speed.
She now understood why Ren insisted on saving her chakra until this confrontation. During training, she had only used this with two hundred needles at most. The aftereffects didn't feel nearly as draining.
Three seconds passed, and Hinata's eye twitched when nobody answered her. Because of her ire, the remnants of her lightning chakra became agitated, sparks crackling around her as her white eyes narrowed.
"He is the commander!" One Konoha ninja flinched and rapidly pointed to a man, throwing him under the bus.
Hinata coerced her chakra to stop flaring on its own, ceasing the unintended effect of crackling sparks as she exchanged an exasperated look with the supposed commander while he cautiously approached her.
He opened his mouth...
"I need you to send half of your forces to reinforce the village." Hinata interrupted him, channeling all the training of the Hyuga heiress to sound as commanding as possible.
Not that it was truly needed. Not after her earlier army-killing display.
"But..."
To give the man credit, he didn't instantly agree, showing that he indeed deserved the leadership position. Even in front of somebody who had slaughtered an army, he started to protest despite being afraid enough that his knees slightly shook.
Poor, low-level Jonin.
But Hinata was not interested in his protests. She decided to quickly explain the situation, even letting the veins around her eyes bulge to imply how she got her information.
"The northern and southern defense points were breached. Over a thousand and five hundred ninja managed to get into Konoha and are either in the process of entrenching themselves inside the buildings or fighting in the streets. Your two hundred ninjas will not change much, but they will definitely help. This battlefield is cleared. Two hundred ninjas should be enough to keep watch here."
Hinata scanned the remaining Konoha ninjas with her eyes, noting that many were injured or tired. Those would be staying.
The commander stayed silent for a moment, mentally calculating the situation, but then he nodded. He realized that Hinata, being a Hyuga, had a better idea of the situation, and if her information was correct, then her suggestion made sense.
That and... well, strength spoke. The commander wryly smiled. He would have liked to see which low-Jonin would have the brass balls to say no to an army-killer S-rank ninja staring him down while demanding something.
He inwardly shook his head with a relieved sigh. His arm was messed up, and as a commander, he had to stay guarding this war anyway. This invasion was more or less over for him.
With that, he turned around and went to organize the two hundred men who would reinforce the ninjas within the village.
Seeing that her suggestion would be followed, Hinata's shoulders slumped in relief. With amusement, she noticed how such a human gesture lessened the fear of many nearby Konoha ninjas.
She decided to take a look at her family members now that she had a moment of respite. While her father was undoubtedly fighting, her sister should be asleep in the arena, under Ren's safety meas-
Hinata's eyes flew wide open as her search for her family members suddenly stopped when she noticed several ninjas with vaguely lightning-flavored chakra about to make their way out of Konoha with unconscious Hanabi slung over one ninja's shoulders like a sack of potatoes.
"YOU DARE!?" Hinata screeched as her head snapped in their direction, and the ground underneath her shattered, sending several nearby ninjas tumbling backward while her lightning chakra exploded out of her body once again.
