Chapter 49
"On my left, the darlings of Konoha's missions, led by Kurenai Yuuhi! Nara Itsuki, Okuda Rie, and Hoshino Daigo!! They're great, aren't they, Matsuo?" the narrator commented.
"That's right, Raido. According to official data, they have never failed any mission they've undertaken so far! Very impressive. Let's see how they fare in battle against other powerful ninjas, shall we?" the co-narrator replied, cueing the introduction of the next team.
"And coming from my right... those we can call the promise of Konoha? Clans and great names standing behind them! The team of Tetsu Hyuuga: Mitome Sora, Uchiha Renji, and Senju Riku!" Raido said.
"An Uchiha and a Senju working together, Raido. We can say that our golden age is back! Their team hides several interesting surprises. I can't wait to see what they can do," Matsuo added.
'The time has come...' I took a deep breath, trying to focus on the battle.
"Come on, guys, let's get this over with," I said.
Renji and Sora nodded, excited to finally fight after a week of intensive training. With every step we took into the arena, the voices of the audience grew louder and more excited, and it was impossible not to avoid the butterflies in my stomach.
It would be the first time I fought in front of so many people, and I knew this would also be the first time all of Konoha would see my Mokuton.
Upon entering the arena, we saw how many people were there, and our surprise intensified even more — the place was packed. I could see several ninjas I knew, who were watching our movements eagerly. My parents were shouting excitedly when they saw me enter. Shisui and Itachi were side by side with Fugaku, who now accompanied Hiruzen as his right-hand man and new advisor, while Kakashi and Tetsu stood together with Guy and Yamato.
'If we mess up here, our reputation will be ruined... Let's at least put up a good fight.'
In the center of the arena, Hayate Gekkou waited for everyone to approach so he could explain the rules of combat. As we made our way over, his expression grew serious as he spoke to us.
"The battle will begin as soon as the signal sounds. Until then, stay nine meters apart for safety, and then you may begin fighting.
The fight lasts until all three members of the enemy team are down and unable to fight, or until you surrender. Any kind of intentional mutilation that results in serious injury with no chance of recovery—such as death — is strictly prohibited. Any questions?"
Everyone replied that they had no questions and proceeded to their respective places in the arena.
'No deaths or serious injuries. That's easy... but I remembered that this kind of thing wasn't exactly enforced before. Strange.'
"Sora, Renji, you know what to do. Let's finish them off," I said with a smile.
"You didn't even need to say that," Renji replied excitedly.
"They don't stand a chance," Sora commented.
And then the bell rang, signaling the start of the battle.
Sora, before I even had time to move, threw some kunai at them, aiming to strike them directly. It would have caused enormous damage, but she avoided it by activating the explosive tags before they reached their target — a feint that still managed to wound them.
Boom!
The earth rose into the sky, covering the battlefield and blocking their view. Renji responded exactly as we had planned, activating his Sharingan and charging at them, his feet and blade infused with Fuuton. He combined speed, agility, and kenjutsu in a unique way.
In response to my allies' movements, I made hand seals and said:
"Renji, now! Doton: Mud Slide!"
The ground beneath Renji turned to mud, and thanks to the momentum he had gained, it acted like a ramp that sent him sliding upward. The ramp curved and tore free from the earth, launching him into the sky.
When he reached the highest point, moving at terrifying speed, he shouted:
"Katon: Great Fireball!"
The arena erupted with excitement at our swift movements and the flawless execution of the elemental combo, which scorched the entire area where they stood.
I took advantage of the moment to rush toward them, since there was no more dust blocking our vision. But then I realized their injuries and burns weren't as severe as expected; somehow they had defended themselves — though it didn't matter.
When I got close enough, I prepared to attack with more jutsu, but they acted first.
The girl, Rie, also formed hand seals and, to my surprise, unleashed a Doton jutsu I hadn't expected.
"Doton: Great Earth Fissure!" she shouted.
Suddenly, in front of me, before I could approach, the ground split in half and a huge hole appeared, blocking my path and threatening to swallow me if I advanced.
'Are they that powerful even with jutsu? No... something's wrong.'
"Riku, genjutsu!" Renji — now on the opposite side of the arena — warned me just as I began to sense the illusion.
I leapt back in time to avoid being caught by another ability rushing toward me. Itsuki's shadows surged forward, trying to paralyze me, but I jumped, and at the same time felt my instincts sharpening.
[Battle Instinct activated.]
My body reacted on its own, dodging backward in midair and preventing a kunai from striking me.
'Where did that come from?' I scanned the area quickly and saw another split of Itsuki's shadow, which had tried to strike me with everything it had.
'These guys are really fast...'
In front of me I had two clear opponents, Rie and Itsuki, while Renji exchanged blows with Daigo, who was surprisingly managing to withstand my friend's attacks. I was at a disadvantage, as I was used to being, but I still had Sora by my side — she had arrived to help me in the battle.
"Together, Riku! Let's go," she said.
"I can always count on you, Sora!"
I smiled and prepared to continue the battle, now with one more ally by my side.
