Chapter 44
The day of the big Chunin Exam had finally arrived.
I woke up thrilled to show off my skills, even though I knew that the first day would just be a written test to assess our knowledge, as usual.
We arrived in front of the building where the test would be held, and some ninjas were already gathered, waiting for the gate to open so we could enter the classrooms and take the tests. To my surprise, Renji seemed to be the most worried of the three of us.
'I never doubted his intelligence because he's an Uchiha, but if he continues like this during the exam, he definitely won't be able to pass.'
"Renji, is something wrong?" I asked.
"What? Oh, no... I'm just thinking too much, it's not a problem," he replied, starting to walk towards the entrance, which was finally opening.
Sora and I shrugged, but I was still a little worried about him.
When we entered the classroom, the person who gave us the test was the captain of Konoha's interrogation force, Ibiki Morino. He gave us all the information we needed, especially warning that if we were caught cheating, all three members of the team would be disqualified and we would have to wait until next year to take the test.
As soon as the tests were handed out and we could begin, I realized that every question was extremely easy.
[Test started. Intelligence level required for the test: 20]
[Current level: 28]
[Congratulations! You aced the test.]
'Hm, this is pretty fun,' I thought, smiling as I saw that all the correct answers were highlighted in the same color as the translucent system screen in front of me. I marked them all in no time.
Ibiki watched me cautiously when he noticed the smile on my face, which was different from the other candidates in the room, but he ignored it — probably because he realized I wasn't cheating, at least not in a way he could detect.
Glancing around, I noticed that Sora was writing her answers calmly, although she stopped every now and then to think. And Renji, who hadn't answered a question in a while.
'Shit, now I don't know if he's having trouble or if he's already finished like me.'
With that doubt in mind, I decided not to risk being eliminated from the Chunin Exam because of a teammate who froze when he saw some questions on paper.
It was common to hear some of the jounin in the room call out individuals and entire teams who were caught cheating, disqualifying them immediately. Using my > Strategic Analysis < skill, I waited for the perfect moment when none of the jounin were focused on me to make a hand seal under the table.
Concentrating my chakra, I made the correct answers appear next to Renji and Sora's tests. When they noticed what I was doing, they began to mark the questions with ease until they finished. With that, I released the seal so the answers disappeared from both tables, preventing them from being discovered.
Brrrr.
The alarm for the end of the first test rang, and after that, Ibiki came to collect the tests while dismissing the candidates who had passed. Our team passed.
We left the room with the rest of the teams that had qualified for the second phase of the tournament.
Renji seemed relieved to have finished, but still looked like he had worked very hard, while Sora was totally unconcerned; in fact, she was very happy.
"Hey, Riku, you know that thing you did? You know, the wooden thing and everything!" she said, trying to keep it a secret that we had cheated on the test, but without any actual secrecy.
"Yes, I know, Sora... I hope it helped you in some way," I said, scratching my head.
"It helped! There were a few—"
When she was about to speak loudly about what had happened, Renji quickly covered her mouth.
"What she meant, Riku, is that you did well... I was extremely tense during that incident myself," he said.
"Ah, relax. The important thing now is to prepare for the next phase of the exam," I replied.
I watched some competitors breathe in relief after passing the first test, while others simply walked away disappointed.
The team we had seen in front of the Forest of Death was talking a short distance away. Hayato was visibly excited, which showed that they had also passed the stage.
"All those who passed, follow me," said a kunoichi wearing the elite Konoha uniform.
We followed a narrow corridor to a wooden gate.
When it opened, I saw a large hall with bleachers on the second floor and a massive stone statue of two hands joined together, forming a seal in the center of the room.
The place was extremely imposing despite its simplicity.
Several jounin were gathered there, and the kunoichi joined them.
Tetsu, Ibiki, Asuma, Kurenai, Kakashi, and Shisui were the shinobi I recognized.
Asuma stepped forward from among the other jounin to speak.
"I'm glad to see that so many genin passed the first test.
The second phase of the Chunin Exam begins tomorrow in the Forty-Fourth Training Zone, known to those in the know as the 'Forest of Death.'" He smiled.
"Rest well. We will meet there at sunrise. You are dismissed," Asuma concluded.
[Second Phase of the Chunin Exam: Unlocked]
Almost everyone began murmuring, worried about what awaited them in the next phase.
Sora and Renji looked at me, realizing that I had been right about the next step of the exam — their tension was palpable, but so was their confidence.
"Ready to take them all down?" I asked with a confident smile.
They smiled back.
"As long as you leave some of them for us," Sora said with a grin.
"Hmm, you should be the one worried about that, Sora. Let's finish them all off before he even sees them," Renji said, trying to maintain his cool-boy pose but letting out a small smile.
"We'll see about that... just be careful not to fall behind again," I teased.
Tomorrow, there would be no more test papers or correct answers appearing in front of me.
It would be strength, strategy, and... a little bit of luck.
"Whatever awaits me, I'm ready."
[Current Objective: Pass the second phase of the Chunin Exam]
