Chapter 42: Obito Collects Kids Again
"Male… him?"
Yugao Uzuki stood there, dumbfounded, staring at Haku's delicate face.
This face was cuter than she ever was as a child. That soft expression, those shimmering eyes, that fragile air that made you want to scoop him up and smother him with hugs ... this guy says that's a boy?
She was completely confused.
Obito, seeing her frozen expression, shrugged and casually pointed at her.
Then he looked down at Haku and said:
"This idiot's name is Yugao Uzuki. She's my subordinate."
"From now on, she'll be your one-san."
"Hey! Who are you calling an idiot?!"
Yugao snapped back to her senses immediately, glaring at Obito.
"Yes!"
Haku nodded earnestly and looked up at Yugao.
"Yugao one-san."
Yugao blinked. And then melted slightly. "Y-Yeah… hello."
Then she turned back toward Obito and asked, "So, what's the story with him?"
"His name's Haku. I'll explain more later," Obito replied as he started walking toward the base, Haku following by his side.
"Let him get familiar with the place first, then I'll give you the whole backstory. Saves me from repeating myself."
A few minutes later, Obito and Yugao brought Haku to meet Chihori and Karin.
"This is Haku," Obito began. "Yes, he's a boy. A descendant of the Snow Clan that was wiped out years ago."
"He awakened a kekkei genkai, ice release. His dumbass dad panicked, called it a curse, killed his mom, and tried to kill him too."
"Then, well… Haku's bloodline awakened fully in the moment of trauma. His father didn't walk away from that one."
"And now, he's an orphan. So, I brought him back."
Yugao and Chihori both looked at Haku with a new layer of sympathy in their eyes.
Meanwhile, little Karin stared wide-eyed at him.
This kid… was even cuter than her?!
Obito continued the introductions.
"This is Karin. From now on, she'll be your little sister."
"And this is her mother, Chihori."
He paused and glanced at her.
Chihori got the message, crouched down beside Haku, and gently placed a hand on his head.
"You can call me Auntie," she said with a soft smile.
Feeling the warmth of her palm and the gentle tone, Haku whispered:
"Hmm… Aunt Chihori..."
His eyes began to turn red again but not from sorrow this time.
"Alright then, from today on, Haku's part of us," Obito said, clapping his hands.
"Yugao, starting tomorrow, after your own training, you're responsible for teaching him some basic ninja knowledge."
"Also assign him some physical conditioning drills."
"But don't start chakra training yet."
"Got it," Yugao nodded.
After that, Obito let Chihori and Karin lead Haku away to settle into a room.
Meanwhile, Obito headed into his study, pulled out a Red item, and rolled it between his fingers.
It was the essence of Haku's mother, a pure Red item holding the natural bloodline of the Snow Clan.
After a moment of silent thought, Obito stowed the item again and pulled out an old scroll of Konoha's sealing techniques.
He resumed his research.
Time passed like lightning.
In the blink of an eye, June had arrived.
That afternoon, Obito had to stop his studies, because White Zetsu brought him some unexpected news.
"The Three-Tails has been reborn."
Obito raised an eyebrow.
"Where's that big turtle now?"
White Zetsu didn't even blink. "Still in the Land of Water... hiding in a huge lake."
Obito stood up, cracked his neck, and said simply:
"Let's go."
---
At the same time, in the Mizukage's office, the body of the Fourth Mizukage suddenly paused.
A moment later, he summoned an Anbu.
Not long after, the Fourth Mizukage quietly left the Hidden Mist Village, bringing along two full squads of Mist ninja.
Meanwhile, in a quiet courtyard within the village, a group of important figures were in the middle of a heated meeting.
Just then, a figure burst into the conference room in a hurry.
"Patriarch! I just got word, the Fourth Mizukage has left the village!"
The room fell silent. A middle-aged man with short brown hair raised his head.
"When?"
"Just now!"
"How many people did he bring? Any word on where or why?"
"He brought two squads. As for his purpose... it's unclear."
"..."
The middle-aged man fell quiet, brows furrowed, an uncertain conflict rising in his heart.
"Patriarch, now's the time!" one of the advisors urged.
"Since the Fourth came to power, he's been ruthlessly suppressing our Terumi clan. If this keeps up, how much longer do you think we'll last?"
"The Snow Clan's fate should be enough of a warning. We can't keep waiting, Patriarch, take the shot!"
The other elders echoed their support, voices rising with urgency.
Looking at the passionate, indignant faces of his clansmen, the Patriarch let out a long sigh.
Since the Fourth Mizukage took office, his personality had done a complete 180—no longer the gentle, balanced man he once was.
Instead, he'd become ruthless, cold, and unrelenting.
The Terumi and Kaguya clans had been pushed out of the upper ranks. Their elite had been reassigned to suicide missions, and the rest were left to rot on the lowest-pay, highest-risk jobs.
The Terumi Patriarch couldn't understand it. He had no beef with previous Mizukage, and he'd certainly never crossed paths with the Fourth before. So why this much hostility?
Was it just because they were a bloodline clan?
The thought nagged at him but there was no time to figure it out now.
"Patriarch, the order!" another voice pressed.
The Patriarch exhaled slowly, then began to issue commands.
"Shota. Head out immediately. Track the Fourth Mizukage. Leave marks along the way for us to follow."
"Yes!" A young man nodded, then disappeared from the room in a blur of motion.
"Elder Kazuma," the Patriarch continued,
"Assemble every clan member above chūnin. We'll move through the secret passage once night falls."
"Understood!"
"Hades," He turned to another elder. "You'll stay behind. Once we leave, guide the rest of the clan out of the village under cover of night."
"Find a safe place to hide. If we don't return by tomorrow, leave the Land of Water with everyone you can."
Suddenly, a girl with long brown hair stood up sharply.
"Father, I'm going too!"
"Mei!" the middle-aged man snapped.
"If we fail, there'll be no place for us left in this land!"
"When that happens, someone needs to carry the clan's hope. That someone is you. You'll protect our bloodline. You'll rebuild us when the time is right."
"You will obey orders."
"..."
Mei sat down again, shoulders tense, lips pressed into a thin line... obviously not in a good mood.
