Chapter 40: Masterpiece? More Like Masterpoop
On this day, March spring.
Winter in Konoha had long passed, and people on the streets had already changed into their spring clothes.
On one street, a figure wearing a Konoha forehead protector and carrying a ninja sword walked forward expressionlessly.
"Hayate-kun, you're back."
A neighbor aunt greeted him warmly.
In contrast, Hayate Gekkō merely nodded politely and continued on his way without a word.
"Alas…"
Watching his back disappear, the aunt sighed softly.
"Ever since the year before last… he…"
"I hope he can cheer up. That Yugao child, what a shame…"
An uncle nearby chimed in.
The two kids had grown up under the watchful eyes of the neighborhood. Now, one was gone, and the other...
Hearing their voices, Hayate Gekkō walked home with a blank face.
He was now a full-fledged shinobi, but on missions, he rarely spoke and never smiled. His teammates had dubbed him the "cold-faced man."
Arriving home, he didn't go inside right away. Instead, he stood quietly, gazing at the house diagonally across the street, doors and windows sealed shut.
That night over a year ago, when the Nine-Tails stormed the village, everyone either panicked or ran for cover.
But he... he had rushed into that house first, hoping to see her.
But the figure he longed for wasn't there.
After realizing it, he sprinted to the training ground where they had often met.
But he never made it. A passing ninja forcibly dragged him to safety.
He hadn't seen her since.
The villagers told him she'd been training that night, and the area was one of the hardest hit. Her body was never found. No bones left. Just gone.
Plenty of people had been smashed into paste by the Nine-Tails. Nothing recognizable remained.
But he didn't believe it.
He didn't want to believe it.
"If… if I hadn't left early… if I had taken her with me that night…"
Hayate Gekkō clenched his fists. His face was full of silent remorse.
Meanwhile, in the Land of Water, Base 2's training ground
On the training ground
"Dance of the Three Days and Moon!"
Three purple blurs... left, right, and overhead slashed toward Obito in perfect sync.
Obito shifted once, twice... effortlessly dodging the side attacks. Then he raised his sword and casually slashed horizontally.
Clang!
His blade met Yugao's in mid-air, sending her flying back with just one swing..
She twisted and recovered gracefully, landing with a quick step. Then, chakra flared
"Vacuum Sword!"
A sharp arc of wind chakra shot toward Obito.
At the same moment, as it soared toward him, Yugao sheathed her sword, dropped into a low stance, then vanished in a blur of movement.
Obito raised his sword and casually cleaved through the chakra slash.
And just as the energy slash dispersed, before his swing even finished, Yugao appeared at point-blank range, blade aimed right at his throat.
"Killing Slash!"
Obito's eyes lit up a bit at the angle and timing pretty slick. So he let it happen. The blade sliced through… air.
It passed harmlessly through his neck.
"Hoh. Not bad. Ordinary Jonin would have a hard time dodging that."
Clink.
Yugao sheathed her sword slowly, then gave a small, smug smile.
"Thanks to your brutal training, of course. Much appreciated~"
Over a year of intense training... Yugao Uzuki had now mastered Iron Country swordsmanship.
Absorbed most of the Konoha-ryū techniques, and become proficient in shadow clones, shunshin, genjutsu, and the three basic nature transformations: wind, water, and fire.
But Obito had noticed something.
Even after absorbing a Red item, her chakra pool was still on the low side.
Well… to be fair, most shinobi in this world hit the same wall: chakra and stamina.
High-level ninjutsu? Pointless if your battery runs out after two casts.
That included Yugao too.
Sure, she was still physically growing, so there was some room to expand her chakra pool but Obito estimated she'd probably cap out around elite Jonin level.
Which was... not good enough.
Not for his goals.
The plan was Kage level, not "almost there."
Should he keep feeding her Red items from generic ninja to build her base stats?
Or just hand her one with a Kekkei Genkai and fast-track the whole thing?
Obito narrowed his eyes slightly and tapped his chin.
Hashirama cells. Maybe those could be fused into a Red item.
He still had a few leftover from Madara's stash… though most of that was already spent on growing White Zetsu.
He might need to pay a visit to a certain mad scientist snake freak and get some supplies.
"Orochimaru, huh..."
He fell deep into thought.
Then... wave wave.
Obito blinked.
A hand was suddenly waving right in front of his face.
He turned his head and glared.
"Huh? What are you doing?"
Yugao quickly pulled her hand back and huffed.
"Hmph! Who told you to just zone out all of a sudden?"
…Well, she had been trying to lift his mask and see his face, but chickened out last second.
Not that she'd admit it.
Whatever. At this point, whether he was Madara or Obito or whatever, didn't matter much anymore.
Almost two years together now… and those memories of Konoha and the boy next door were starting to fade.
Being beside this annoying masked man just felt more and more natural.
"Tch. I was thinking about important stuff."
Obito rolled his eyes and turned away.
"Anyway, training's over. Let's go."
Outside the base, on the grassy clearing
"Tobi! Tobi! Look!"
Little Karin, now nearly two years old, waved a piece of paper excitedly... it was covered in wild crayon doodles.
"Hmph! Karin-chan, you're still too young.
Behold... my masterpiece!"
White Zetsu (aka Tobi) popped up beside her, smug as hell.
He held up his drawing.
A crude, majestic, child-like sketch of…
Poop.
A steaming pile of it.
Drawn with pride.
