Chapter 22 – One Sentence Breaks Kabuto’s Mask, Danzo’s Ambush!

After taking the mission scroll, Nagi just gave it a quick glance.

"Disappearances near the shipping company."

"A samurai carrying a large blade, accompanied by a masked attendant."

He didn't even need to think—he already knew who was behind it.

With that, Nagi turned and left the mission center.

He left behind a crowd of bewildered shinobi.

"Lord Nagi taking a C-rank mission so seriously? Is there something more going on here?"

After Nagi departed, the clerk couldn't help but fill in the blanks with his own imagination.

As the top talent of Konoha's younger generation, Nagi wouldn't zero in on a random C-rank mission for no reason.

"You there—reinvestigate that mission later. Cross-check it with the client's intel and re-evaluate the mission rank."

Only after issuing the order did the clerk feel reassured enough to leave.

On the other side, this was Nagi's first time leaving Konoha. Everything outside the village felt fresh and new.

Even though he had transmigrated here over ten years ago, this was his first time stepping outside Konoha.

But he didn't get far before bumping into someone familiar.

Well—not entirely familiar.

"You heading out on a mission too? I recognize you—Nagi!"

A boy with glasses and a scholarly appearance approached, greeting him warmly.

"You probably don't know me yet. I'm your upperclassman—Kabuto Yakushi."

Kabuto tried to put on what he thought was a friendly, approachable expression.

It was the face he used to earn people's trust. It usually worked.

But not today.

Nagi didn't even bother lifting a hand in return.

"Haha, I guess it's normal if you don't know me. I just got back from a mission."

Nagi stared coldly as Kabuto tried to act the part of a senior ninja.

"Get to the point. What do you want?"

Nagi cut straight to the chase.

If Kabuto had shown up here, there was definitely a reason.

"Hehe, don't be so on edge. I just wanted to be friends."

"Oh, and this must be your first mission outside the village, right? Looks like you're headed to the Land of Waves?"

Kabuto kept smiling, trying not to be shaken no matter how indifferent Nagi seemed.

"I happen to have a detailed map of the route there."

As he spoke, Kabuto pulled it out, trying to offer it to Nagi.

"So? What does Orochimaru want from me?"

Nagi, seeing Kabuto starting to show his tail, didn't bother playing games.

He called it out directly—Kabuto was working for Orochimaru.

"So this Nagi really is calm and sharp. He even figured that out?"

Kabuto was surprised, but kept his expression neutral.

It seemed Nagi was far more perceptive than most of the old guard back in the village.

"Oh, it's nothing. I just do a little work for Lord Orochimaru from time to time. He's heard about you and is quite impressed."

Kabuto leaned in, speaking quietly next to Nagi's ear.

"He's especially interested in your Wood Release."

He expected Nagi to react in shock.

But Nagi didn't even blink.

Kabuto had planned to use that classified intel to control the conversation, but it completely backfired.

After all, that kind of information was supposed to be Konoha's top-tier SSS classified secret.

"Oh? And?"

Nagi looked at Kabuto, amused by his posturing.

He'd barely shown one side of his power, and this guy thought he had him figured out.

"But speaking of which, I actually know quite a bit about you."

Nagi's eyes locked onto Kabuto's.

That gaze made Kabuto feel like his entire being was laid bare.

And for a double agent, the scariest thing was—

—being seen through.

"Haha, you're joking. I'm nothing like you, Nagi—the genius of Konoha."

Before Kabuto could finish the sentence, Nagi leaned in close to his ear.

"Nonō Yakushi."

Kabuto froze.

He'd expected Nagi might guess he was working for Danzo—or Orochimaru.

But he never imagined Nagi would say that name.

His knees nearly buckled from the shock.

"Well? Are you going to deny it?"

Nagi asked, watching him with interest. He was confident Kabuto wouldn't refute it.

Kabuto looked completely deflated.

He'd come here thinking he could get the upper hand by exploiting Nagi's secrets.

But Nagi crushed his entire plan with a single sentence.

"Tch… Judging by your face, I guess you can't even speak now."

Nagi said lazily as he walked right past Kabuto.

As for killing him?

No need. Kabuto wasn't even worthy yet. If it had been "Dragon Kabuto," Nagi might have entertained the idea of a fight.

But this ordinary version? Not even worth the warm-up.

"Danzo has men stationed along the road—he's planning an ambush."

Kabuto said it flatly, completely defeated.

Nagi had seen through him so effortlessly that Kabuto's usual confidence as a manipulator was shattered.

But Nagi didn't even respond. He just kept walking.

Only after Nagi left did Kabuto finally exhale.

Terrifying.

Nagi was terrifying.

Even when facing Orochimaru or Danzo, Kabuto had never felt this unsettled.

It was as if he had no secrets in front of Nagi.

"… What a pointless move."

Kabuto bent down and picked up the map he'd originally prepared to give to Nagi.

He'd assumed a first-timer like Nagi would need it.

Turns out, he didn't need anything at all.

"Looks like Danzo's people are the ones who'll suffer now."

Kabuto muttered with a tinge of schadenfreude, staring at Nagi's fading silhouette.

Who told Danzo it was a good idea to mess with someone who had Wood Release—a kekkei genkai only seen from the First Hokage himself?
