Chapter 10: Naruto: Of bone and ice: Chapter 8(1)
I was forced to the front lines by those too cowardly to do so on their own. Only a small number of Hidden Mist shinobi fought at the front while the rest provided support from cover. Kunai and other weapons flew through the air, ninjutsu was used everywhere, fire and water clashed in the intense heat. The Hidden Leaf used the cover of their Earth Style walls to fire projectiles, their attacks seemed more coordinated than ours, their warriors fighting together rather than just for themselves. I had no time to stop as we were outnumbered by at least five to one. My lungs were burning and my eyes stung from the blood dripping down them, I had lost count of how many I had killed but more and more were closing in on me. Our chances were looking even worse now as it seemed Konoha reinforcements had arrived from the forest.
I rushed through the hidden ranks of Konoha shinobi, cutting through every body part that came my way, my bones covering me and giving me a huge advantage both offensively and defensively. Piles of dead shinobi began to gather around me as no one seemed able to touch me.
"- Expansion!" Turning around to look, I was suddenly slapped by a giant hand and it sent me flying through the air, I managed to flip back and slid along the ground, recovering. I lost sight of whoever used that jutsu on me as more shinobi attacked me from all directions.
"Fire style, fireball!" The two of them shouted at the same time, using the same jutsu. I was able to counter when I created an ice mirror to block the flames, quickly sliding into it and to their surprise, appearing behind them in another mirror I created. I slit both of their throats before they could strike back.
"Attack the humans!" A voice shouted from behind me. Waves of Hidden Mist Shinobi rushed past me as I slowly stood up, wiping the blood from my face. I watched as the three Kaguyas rushed past me, giving me worried looks as they ran. Somehow, we were holding our ground despite the leaf shinobi being outnumbered.
"We can really win if we keep this up." I thought as I watched the battle unfold. Suddenly, the waves of Hidden Mist Shinobi were broken in mid-air by a massive black staff that seemed to stretch across the battlefield. A whistle sounded in the background. "Retreat!" A voice shouted from the front. It was Nobu, he blew his whistle again and shouted for everyone to retreat. I watched as the Mist Shinobi who were five seconds ago were rushing into battle, ready to die. Now they were running with their tails between their legs. It was then that I saw why.
The staff came down again and I saw a man standing in front of the Konoha forces. He was wearing a black jumpsuit with mesh segments on his lower limbs. The most noticeable thing would have to be the armored hood with a bandana-like forehead protector that was tied with two long straps. If my memory serves me correctly, he was the Third Hokage. My suspicions were confirmed when the shinobi around me started screaming and running for their lives.
"It's the Hokage! Run!" One of them shouted.
"He's going to kill us all!" Another voice said as they ran as fast as they could back into the forest. The rest was a blur as all I could see were bodies moving and them running for cover for their lives. Massive shurikens cut through the ranks of ninja who were still trying to escape, this was the Hokage's jutsu. He threw one shuriken and then it suddenly turned into twenty, flying in all directions. They were too big to stop and tore into everything they hit before slamming into the ground covered in the blood of their targets. I retreated into the forest along with the other survivors, there weren't many.
Even Nobu was taken down by one of the massive shurikens fired by the Hokage. I guessed that we were heading back to the boats and retreating back to the land of water. This plan was quickly interrupted when a mass of hidden leaf ninja appeared in the forest, blocking our path.
"Charge!" their leader shouted. The hellish battle began again, but this time it was more like a massacre. The Hidden Mist ninja were so focused on getting away that they didn't notice the enemy attack until the last moment. Some tried to resist, but there were too many enemies and they didn't stand a chance.
Some managed to slip past the onslaught, including me. I managed to kill three of them before slipping past the left flank and disappearing into the woods. I didn't look back to see the screams, I didn't slow down, and I didn't care. All that mattered was that I got out of this hell alive. After a while, I reached the shore, but to my surprise, the Hidden Leaf had already sabotaged the boats. I slipped back into the woods and ran away. I needed to find a safe place to hide, because now the Hidden Leaf would probably send out small squads to search for survivors, and I didn't want to be captured.
The screams and noise of the battle had long since stopped and I assumed it was over. I stopped crouching on a thick branch, I could see three hidden mist ninjas hiding behind the tree, I guessed they had seen the same thing as me and were trying to come up with a plan. I jumped down and slowly approached them, accidentally startling them.
"Oh my god, it's you. We could have killed you, brat, be a little smarter next time, okay?" The man said, lowering his Kunai. It was the same man who pushed me out of the trench, saying he would cover me.
"Of course he'll survive." I thought to myself. He was with another man who was wounded, and the other was a woman, she was tending to the wound on the wounded man's leg, but it didn't look good.
"How the hell did you survive, kid?" The man asked, sitting up and leaning his back against a large tree. I shrugged.
"Have you seen the boats?" I asked. He nodded, his expression grim. "We have no choice but to find our own way back."
I looked at the other two as the man let out a soft groan. "Will he be able to handle it?" I asked, looking back at the other.
"Damn it, I don't know, kid, stop asking me those damn questions!" I was about to sit up when the bushes to our right began to move, I was about to attack but stopped when I saw who it was. It was the man from the Kaguya clan who tried to ask me questions that time, he was alone and I assumed the other two were dead. His face was still the same but there was blood on it which made him look even more menacing.
The others relaxed a little, but not much, as they realized that it was not an enemy. "I swear, if anyone else jumps out of the bush, I will..." That shinobi said, but was cut off by Kaguya's man.
"So you survived? I'm not surprised. You have a gift." He said, his voice deep. I watched him closely, "um… Thank you." I don't know what else to say. He walked over to the injured man, and he groaned again. The woman tried to use what I assumed was medical ninjutsu on him, but it didn't seem to work. Kaguya suddenly slit the man's throat, and the woman screamed in shock.
"What the hell!" She yelled, raising her Kunai. The Kaguya man's face didn't change as he glared at her. "He was supposed to die anyway." He said as he walked back towards me. Now my defense was up, was he going to attack me? Or just chat? I had no idea.
