Naruto : Infinite Buff!

Chapter 4: The Storm Before the Calm

The rain poured like a relentless tide, each drop striking the ruined streets of Amegakure with deafening intensity. The thunder above cracked like the roar of a beast, shaking the crumbling buildings to their cores. Rivers of murky water and debris streamed through the narrow alleys, their paths muddied by the weight of destruction that hung over the village. Lightning flashed, splitting the heavens and illuminating the jagged remnants of a world that refused to heal.

Inside the shelter, the storm seemed muted, yet its oppressive presence was felt in every breath. The damp air clung to the skin, heavy with moisture and the faint stench of mildew. Water dripped steadily from the cracked ceiling, pooling on the uneven floor where the fire flickered weakly in the corner. Its dim light fought a losing battle against the pervasive shadows that crept along the walls.

Amatsu sat in the farthest corner of the room, his back pressed against the cold stone. His body was still, but his dark eyes gleamed with quiet intensity, betraying the tension that coiled within him. His muscles ached, tight and bruised from the day's training. The stale bread in his hand crumbled under his grip as he tore a piece off and placed it in his mouth. He chewed mechanically, each bite dry and tasteless, scraping his throat as he swallowed. His hunger wasn't for food—it was for something deeper, something that the bread could never satisfy.

His system remained silent.

Across the room, Konan crouched near the fire, stirring a thin soup in a battered pot. Steam rose weakly from its surface, barely cutting through the damp air. Her hands moved carefully, though her amber eyes flicked to Amatsu occasionally, watching him with a mixture of worry and unease. She tried to focus on her task, but the tension in the air was suffocating, pressing down on her like a weight she couldn't shake.

Yahiko paced near the doorway, his soaked boots splashing through the shallow puddles that had formed on the floor. His orange hair clung to his forehead, dripping with rainwater. His movements were restless, sharp, like a caged animal ready to lash out. His fists clenched and unclenched at his sides.

"This storm…" Yahiko muttered, his voice low but sharp. He stopped near the doorway, staring out into the endless downpour. His posture was tense, his body rigid as he spoke. "It's worse than usual. It feels like the whole world's falling apart."

"It's just the rain," Konan said softly, though her voice wavered. She didn't look up from the soup. "We've seen storms like this before."

"No." Yahiko turned to face her, his voice rising, his frustration spilling over. "This is different. Can't you feel it? The air—" He gestured toward the doorway, his movements erratic. "It's heavy. Something's coming."

Konan hesitated, her hands stilling over the pot. Her gaze shifted to Amatsu, as if searching for confirmation, but his expression was unreadable. He remained silent, his eyes fixed on the bread in his hands. But there was a tension in his frame, a stillness that felt almost predatory. Yahiko wasn't wrong. The air was thick, charged with something more than rain. Amatsu could feel it in his bones, the faint vibration beneath his feet like a distant drumbeat, growing louder with each passing second.

The first explosion shattered the silence.

The ground trembled violently, shaking the walls of the shelter as chunks of stone and wood rained down from above. The fire was snuffed out in an instant, plunging the room into darkness. Yahiko stumbled, barely catching himself as the shockwave rippled through the air. Konan gasped, her hands clutching the pot as it tipped over, spilling the precious soup across the floor.

Amatsu was already moving. His body reacted on instinct, his muscles coiling like a spring ready to snap. His sharp gaze darted toward the doorway, where the faint glow of firelight flickered against the storm. Another explosion followed, closer this time. The door splintered, shards of wood flying inward as the shockwave tore through the room. The wind howled, carrying with it the acrid stench of smoke and ash.

Through the smoke and rain, three figures emerged, their silhouettes sharp and menacing. The first was a hulking man. His face was hidden behind a mask shaped like a snarling beast, and in his hands, he held a massive blade, its serrated edge dripping with rainwater. The second figure was shorter, wiry, his hands wrapped in bloodstained bandages that glowed faintly with chakra. He moved like a predator, his body low, his steps deliberate. The third was a woman, her tangled hair clinging to her face, her wild eyes gleaming with madness. She swung a chain lazily at her side, the weighted ends dripping with a viscous black liquid that hissed and bubbled as it struck the ground.

The man in the mask stepped forward, his boots splashing through the puddles. His voice was a low growl, distorted by the storm. "Three little rats," he said, his tone mocking. "Huddled together, hiding from the storm. How pathetic."

His eyes shifted to Konan, lingering on her face and form. A low chuckle escaped him, dark and dripping with malice. "But this one…" His voice took on a lecherous edge. "So pretty. Such a shame to waste her here. Maybe I'll take her for myself before I kill her."

Konan's face went pale, her amber eyes widening as she instinctively backed away. The man took another step forward, his masked face tilting as he studied her. "What a sweet face," he murmured. "I wonder how long it'll stay pretty when she's screaming."

"Shut your filthy mouth!" Yahiko roared, stepping forward with his fists raised. His entire body trembled, his knuckles white as his nails dug into his palms. "If you touch her, I'll kill you!"

The woman with the chain cackled, her voice sharp and cruel. "Kill us? You can barely stand, boy."

Amatsu moved first.

In a blur of motion, he closed the distance between himself and the masked man. The man's blade came down in a wide arc, aiming to cleave him in two, but Amatsu twisted his body, the serrated steel slicing through empty air. His counterattack was immediate. A knee driven into the man's ribs with enough force to crack bone. The man staggered, letting out a guttural roar, but he recovered quickly, swinging his blade again with brutal strength.

Amatsu ducked under the strike, his foot lashing out in a kick that connected with the man's knee. The masked man roared as his leg buckled, but he didn't fall. His blade came down again, faster this time, forcing Amatsu to roll to the side. The serrated edge grazed his shoulder, drawing a thin line of blood.

The woman's chain lashed out, the weighted end hissing through the air. Amatsu jumped back, the poisoned metal missing his face by inches. The chain struck the ground with a loud crack, leaving a deep scar in the stone floor. She grinned, her wild eyes locked onto him as she swung the chain again, faster this time.

Amatsu caught it mid-air.

Amatsu's fingers closed around the slick, venomous chain. The black liquid hissed against his skin, but he didn't flinch. He yanked the chain with brutal force, pulling the woman toward him. Her grin faltered as she stumbled forward, her wild eyes widening. The moment she was within range, Amatsu's fist shot out, slamming into her face with a sickening crunch. Blood sprayed from her shattered nose as her head snapped back, her body crumpling to the ground.

Before she could recover, Amatsu pressed his foot down on her chest, pinning her to the floor. Her hands clawed at his leg, her fingers slick with blood and poison, but her struggles only fueled his resolve. He grabbed the chain she had once wielded with such confidence and wrapped it tightly around her neck. Her gasps turned to desperate gurgles as her airway was crushed beneath the chain's weight.

The masked man roared, charging toward Amatsu with his serrated blade raised high. His movements were heavy, reckless, his rage overtaking his precision. Amatsu released the woman's lifeless body and turned to face the incoming attack. The blade came down in a brutal arc, aiming to cleave him in two, but Amatsu sidestepped at the last possible moment. The blade struck the ground with a deafening clang, sending sparks flying into the air.

Amatsu countered immediately, his fist slamming into the man's exposed side. The impact echoed through the shelter, the force of the blow enough to crack the thick armor encasing the man's ribs. The masked man staggered, his breath coming in ragged gasps, but he refused to fall. He swung his blade again, this time in a wide horizontal slash meant to decapitate.

Amatsu ducked low, the blade whistling mere inches above his head. He surged forward, closing the distance between himself and the larger man. His elbow struck the man's jaw with a thunderous crack, the force of the blow shattering the mask and revealing a face twisted in pain and fury. Blood streamed from the man's mouth, but he snarled, refusing to yield.

The shorter man with the bloodstained bandages took his chance, darting toward Amatsu with chakra-coated fists glowing like firebrands. His movements were swift, precise, every strike aimed to kill. Amatsu had no time to recover from his attack on the masked man. He pivoted sharply, his body twisting out of the path of a fist that would have crushed his ribs. The bandaged man's chakra-coated knuckles grazed Amatsu's side, sending a searing jolt of pain through his body.

The pain was sharp, blinding at first, but it faded as quickly as it came. Amatsu's focus sharpened, his movements becoming more fluid. He sidestepped the next strike, his reflexes heightened by the adrenaline coursing through his veins. The bandaged man snarled, his frustration evident as his blows continued to miss their mark.

Amatsu saw his opening. As the man lunged forward, he ducked beneath the strike and drove his knee into the man's stomach. The bandaged man let out a choked gasp, his body folding under the force of the blow. Amatsu didn't let up. He grabbed the man by the back of the head and slammed his face into the stone wall. Blood splattered across the surface, and the man collapsed to the ground, motionless.

The masked man roared again, his blade carving through the air with deadly intent. Amatsu barely had time to react, the blade grazing his forearm and leaving a deep gash. Blood poured from the wound, but Amatsu gritted his teeth and pressed forward. He closed the distance once more, his movements a blur as he drove his fist into the man's throat.

The masked man choked, his blade dropping from his hands as he stumbled back. Amatsu didn't hesitate. He grabbed the man by the collar of his green ninja armor and pulled him forward, driving his knee into the man's face. Teeth shattered, blood sprayed, and the man's head snapped back violently. Amatsu released him, and his body crumpled to the ground, lifeless.

Amatsu turned toward the woman's chain-wielding corpse and the unconscious man with the bandaged fists. The storm outside howled louder, as if the heavens themselves were reflecting the chaos within the shelter. Yahiko stood near the doorway, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with shock and fear. Blood dripped from Amatsu's hands, mixing with the rainwater pooling on the floor. His dark eyes locked onto Yahiko's, and for a moment, there was only silence.

Konan stood frozen near the fire, her hands trembling as she clutched the edge of her cloak. Her amber eyes flickered between the carnage and Amatsu, her expression unreadable. The air inside the shelter was thick with the stench of blood and death, the oppressive weight of violence hanging over them like a shadow.

Amatsu's breathing slowed, his body relaxing as the adrenaline began to fade. His system, however, buzzed faintly in the back of his mind, the familiar sensation of growth and progress washing over him.

Amatsu flexed his fingers, blood dripping from his knuckles. The pain in his body was dull now, muted by the system's enhancements. His dark eyes swept over the shelter, taking in the aftermath of the battle. Three enemies, all defeated. Two dead. One unconscious. His strength had been enough, but barely.

Yahiko finally broke the silence, his voice low but trembling with barely restrained anger. "You killed them, Amatsu. Just like that. You didn't even flinch."

Amatsu turned to him, his dark eyes as steady and cold as the rain pouring outside. "They were going to kill us," he said simply, his tone void of emotion. "What did you want me to do? Wait until they slit your throat? Until they dragged Konan away? Hesitation in this world is a death sentence, and I don't intend to die."

Yahiko's fists clenched at his sides, his knuckles whitening as his nails dug into his palms. "You always talk about survival like it's the only thing that matters. Killing them, fine, maybe you had no choice—but like that? You didn't just kill them. You crushed them. You didn't even give them a chance."

"They didn't deserve a chance," Amatsu replied coldly. "If they had the chance, they would've taken it to destroy us. Do you think they would've shown mercy? Do you think they'd hesitate to kill Konan or you? Don't delude yourself. The world doesn't care about your ideals."

Konan stepped forward, her voice soft but steady, though there was an edge of pain in her words. "Amatsu… you don't understand. It's not just about survival. We're trying to build something better than this. If we act the same as the people who destroy, then what's the point? What's the difference between us and them?"

Amatsu's dark gaze locked onto hers, unflinching. "The difference is that we're still alive. That's all that matters."

A heavy silence fell between them, broken only by the sound of the storm raging outside. Finally, Nagato, who had been standing silently in the corner, stepped forward, his voice deep and calm but carrying a weight that demanded attention. "Amatsu isn't wrong," he said, his Rinnegan eyes glinting in the flickering light. "This world is cruel. If we don't act with strength, it will devour us. But strength isn't the same as cruelty, Amatsu. You fight like you're already dead inside."

Amatsu's expression didn't change, but his eyes narrowed slightly. "Better to be dead inside than weak. I'll keep fighting, no matter what it takes. If you can't see that, then you'll never survive."

"We'll survive," Nagato said firmly, his voice cutting through the tension. "But survival alone isn't enough. If we lose who we are, then what's left to fight for?"

Amatsu turned away, his voice cold and final. "Stay here and debate morality if you want. But this place will soon become a battlefield. If you're smart, you'll follow me." Without waiting for a response, he stepped toward the doorway.

He walked past them, his footsteps splashing through the puddles as he approached the shelter's broken doorway. The storm raged on outside, the rain falling in endless sheets, the wind howling like a wounded animal. Amatsu stepped into the downpour, letting the rain wash the blood from his hands.

He stood there for a moment, his eyes fixed on the horizon. The battle had been brutal, but it had proven one thing: strength was all that mattered. Without it, they would've been nothing but corpses, forgotten in the storm.

Amatsu stepped out into the rain, letting the storm cleanse the blood from his hands. His dark eyes flickered, their coldness mirroring the thunderclouds above. With a faint exhale, he willed the system forward, its silent interface appearing in his mind.

Amatsu's lips pressed into a thin line as he dismissed the interface. The fight had been a test, a brutal confirmation of his path. The system had grown with him, each locked buff proof of his sacrifices.

"Still not enough," he murmured, his voice swallowed by the rain. His grip on his humanity loosened further, like a severed thread in the wind. He turned back to the shelter, his expression empty. Survival demanded more than strength. demanded detachment, and he would give it without hesitation.
