Chapter 71: Seeds of a New System!
"Lady Tsunade, what should we do now?"
Shizune glanced at the mature woman beside her, her eyes flickering briefly toward Tsunade's chest before unconsciously lowering to her own. Even disguised, Lady Tsunade's transformation had given her a figure far too well-endowed—it was unfair.
Currently, Tsunade was using a Transformation Technique, taking on the appearance of Shizune's older sister. Her real face was far too recognizable for her to move about safely.
Shizune herself was the niece of Tsunade's late lover, Kato Dan. Ever since Tsunade developed hemophobia, she had taken Shizune in as her disciple, both for companionship and to pass on her medical expertise.
As for why Tsunade abandoned Konoha… whether it was the death of her loved ones or the darkness festering within the Village, only Tsunade herself could truly say.
What was certain was that, with nothing left to bind her there, she chose to walk away from the land that had brought her so much grief.
"Don't worry," Tsunade replied calmly, her expression steady. "Didn't that person say they'd arrange something for us soon? And you—aren't you enjoying yourself a little too much already?"
Her words were sharp, and her side-eye made Shizune flinch. Cream still clung to Shizune's fingertips, betraying her guilty pleasure.
The Umbrella Organization valued talent greatly, and the moment Tsunade and Shizune arrived, their skills immediately drew the attention of the local branch leader.
To cover their tracks, the two had fabricated a backstory: their family was from the Land of Rivers, and long ago their mother had saved a Medical Ninja from the Land of Whirlpools, who in gratitude left them with several Medical Ninjutsu techniques.
Though the tale was full of holes, it was plausible. After all, survivors of the destroyed Land of Whirlpools had scattered across the shinobi world, and it was not rare for wandering ninja to acquire techniques and build new paths for themselves.
"Hehe… Lady Tsunade, the food here is just too good," Shizune admitted, cheeks slightly red.
In truth, the years spent at Tsunade's side had left most of their money gambled away, and meals had often been simple at best. Even when they stumbled upon delicacies, it was nothing compared to the dishes the Umbrella Organization now provided.
Naruto's arrival had brought more than just a new ideology—he had also introduced prosperity through innovation, food included. And food was more than just a luxury; it was an industry. After all, people could not live without the essentials: food, clothing, shelter, and transport.
As Tsunade and Shizune spoke, a panicked voice cut across the courtyard.
"Lady Shizune! We need your help!"
A man in his thirties rushed toward them, sweat pouring down his face.
"What happened?" Shizune asked immediately, concern flashing across her face.
"It's Old Man Sen," the man gasped. "His arm is broken, and his insides are badly injured! If it were something minor, we wouldn't trouble you, but this…"
"Enough! Don't waste time explaining—we'll understand the situation when we get there. Saving him comes first!"
Shizune cut him off firmly. Over the past few days, she had occasionally offered medical aid to villagers, promising that anyone injured could seek her out. She hadn't expected something truly life-threatening to happen so soon.
The ones she treated were ordinary citizens, men and women newly recruited into the Umbrella Organization.
They worked under its commercial branch, the Umbrella Company. In the shinobi world, companies and merchant syndicates were not unheard of—the Gato Company that once terrorized the Land of Waves was a prime example.
Now, Shizune followed the frantic man as he led her to where Old Man Sen had collapsed.
On the way, the man introduced himself.
"My name's Yamamoto… no surname. Old Man Sen had been working for the Umbrella Company. The pay was good, and even overtime had bonuses. For someone who used to struggle every day, it meant the world to him."
Yamamoto's face twisted with guilt as he continued, "He worked hard… too hard. He never rested enough. Today, while on the bridge, he suddenly fainted. He fell before anyone could catch him!"
As for Old Man Sen—his real name had long been forgotten. The villagers simply called him that out of habit and affection.
Since the scene wasn't far, Shizune and the villager quickly arrived. A crowd had already gathered, voices rising in panic.
"Everyone, move back! Don't crowd him—let the air circulate!" Shizune shouted firmly.
"Quick! Listen to Lady Shizune, step aside!" someone echoed.
Recognizing Shizune as a kunoichi, the villagers immediately obeyed, pulling away to give her space.
Shizune knelt beside the injured man. He looked to be in his fifties, lying in a pool of blood. His breathing was shallow.
Without hesitation, she began treatment. First, she set his broken arm, then pressed glowing hands against it, using the Mystical Palm Technique to reconnect the bones. But her frown deepened—the man's internal organs were damaged, blood clots obstructing circulation.
Swiftly forming hand seals, Shizune summoned a Chakra Scalpel, cutting into his chest with surgical precision. To prevent shock or sudden movement, she paralyzed half his body with controlled chakra, numbing him completely.
For a student trained by Tsunade herself, such injuries were manageable. Her hands moved steadily, each incision and seal practiced and precise. Before long, the wound was sutured and stabilized.
The onlookers stared wide-eyed, dazzled.
"No wonder… they call her a ninja…" someone whispered, awe in their voice.
As the old man's breathing steadied, relief spread through the crowd. Their anxious faces softened into gratitude.
Shizune allowed herself a small smile. Perhaps this—saving lives—was why she had chosen to walk the path of a Medical Ninja in the first place.
Not far away, Tsunade leaned against a tree, watching with a faint smile. In these few days, she had learned much about the people under the Umbrella Organization. Most were impoverished villagers—some with small skills, others capable only of manual labor—but all were given decent wages. For ordinary people, their pay was generous.
Was this Umbrella truly meant to be an umbrella for the people?
Her curiosity deepened. Pulling a scroll from her sleeve, Tsunade retrieved the booklet given to all new recruits.
On the cover, bold characters read: Umbrella Ideology.
She opened it. The first line struck her immediately:
"Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth."
Another: "Science and technology are the primary productive forces."
Some phrases were marked with emphasis:
"Water can carry a boat—but it can also overturn it."
"Peace is the foundation of prosperity."
Mixed within were short parables, yet every line carried a weight that made her pause.
What startled her most were the citations. Each phrase ended with the same note: "Naru says."
Who was this Naru? Did he create this ideology?
Tsunade's eyes narrowed. One passage in particular shook her.
"War does not arise from hatred. Its root lies in the unequal distribution of interests."
The words pierced her like lightning. She froze, stunned, then slowly lowered the book, her mind racing. With her years of experience, she immediately grasped the truth in that statement. Hatred was often an aftereffect—but power, wealth, and resources… those were the true sparks of war.
The text expanded further: the world's nations, its conflicting ideologies, and the inequality of resources. Where one land prospered, another suffered scarcity—inevitably sowing seeds of conflict. But if the world were united, if there were only one nation… resources could be allocated equally, not hoarded by some and denied to others.
The book slipped from Tsunade's grasp, landing heavily against the earth.
Did the author truly believe that her grandfather Hashirama's "one-country, one-village" system was flawed?
Her hand trembled, but she bent down and picked it up again. Her eyes scanned faster, more urgently.
She read the entire day. Each page challenged her convictions, even shaking the foundations of the shinobi system itself.
Tsunade and Shizune had been classified as Blue-Level Talents, given a more advanced form of the Umbrella Ideology manual. Unlike the entry-level versions, this one introduced concepts tied to shinobi themselves.
One line struck Tsunade deeply:
"Ninjutsu originates from life and from war. If it can be used for battle, then it can also be used for daily life."
Enclosed within was even a technique—Earth-Turning Technique, an agricultural jutsu designed to aid farming. Alongside it was a method for extracting chakra for basic use.
Tsunade's heart pounded.
What was Umbrella's true goal?
Did they intend to make chakra cultivation public—for everyone?
