Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Into the Abyss
"Hiroki!" The ninja from the Nara clan cried out, his face full of grief. Being part of the Ino-Shika-Cho formation, he and his teammate from the Akimichi clan were evidently close.
Despite his mournful cry, the Nara ninja quickly retreated. Known for their intelligence and calm under pressure, the Nara clan members understood that if even an Akimichi—renowned for strength in direct combat—had fallen, he didn't stand a chance if he engaged head-on.
'Is there no one from the Yamanaka clan here? Their Mind Transfer techniques would be quite troublesome for me,' Shin wondered, briefly frowning. However, he quickly dismissed the thought, concentrating instead on the task at hand. A wave of black mist extended from him, its potent force pulling the Nara ninja into its dark shroud. Moments later, the unconscious form of the Nara ninja emerged, his chakra drained entirely by the dark mist.
Meanwhile, a Yamanaka clan ninja hidden nearby grimaced in pain and fear. "What kind of monster is this guy? His entire presence feels like a black hole! My spiritual energy was shredded the moment I tried to send my consciousness to his mind!"
Unaware that he had already thwarted a Yamanaka's attempt to use Mind Transfer Jutsu, Shin continued to feel invigorated, drawing in the chakra of the unconscious ninjas around him. His chakra reserves grew more potent, although he was unaware of the impact on his spirit from the attempted mind attack.
Shin strode toward the Root headquarters, ignoring the weaker ninjas hiding in the shadows, focusing on his objective. Time was limited—once the threat of the Nine-Tails subsided, Konoha would undoubtedly shift its attention to him. Though he didn't fear a fight, avoiding unnecessary entanglements suited him better.
Just as he neared his destination, he heard a series of swift footsteps, and a squad of masked ninjas blocked his path. Through his heightened senses, he detected a larger force approaching from behind. He recognized a figure leading them—bandages wrapped around his eyes and arms—Danzo Shimura, the infamous leader of Root.
'Isn't this guy supposed to be dealing with the Uchiha right now? Why did he rush over here?' Shin thought, feeling a twinge of irritation. Yet, it made sense. He had advanced on Danzo's headquarters; the man wouldn't sit idle while his base of operations was compromised.
Initially, Danzo was preoccupied with confronting the Uchiha and blaming them for the Nine-Tails' attack. But with Shin laying waste to his stronghold, the risk of losing crucial secrets and resources outweighed his schemes. If the sensitive experiments and classified documents at Root were exposed, Danzo would have few options left, facing exile or worse.
Shin's brow furrowed as the Root ninjas charged at him. With a scoff, he released a wave of black mist. The dark mist devoured the attacks—whether ninjutsu or shurikenjutsu. All that was left were scattered mummified forms of ninjas, their chakra completely drained.
Shin showed no mercy against the Root operatives. These ninjas, conditioned and brainwashed, had forsaken their humanity. Seeing his operatives defeated so swiftly, Danzo faltered, his eyes widening in alarm.
"Who are you, stranger? Do you have any connection to the Nine-Tails' escape?" Danzo's voice rang out, his expression wary as he attempted to place blame on Shin.
"The Nine-Tails? That's your problem—perhaps you should ask the Uchiha," Shin retorted, a smirk playing on his lips. Given the Nine-Tails ' glaring Sharingan influence, he knew that suspicions surrounding the Uchiha had already spread.
Danzo paused, a calculating look in his eye. "Then, are you here with hostile intent toward Konoha? Or did you come here for a bounty?" he probed, attempting to identify Shin.
"I don't waste my time with Konoha's politics," Shin replied coolly, his patience wearing thin. More Root operatives had arrived, and he was no longer interested in drawing this encounter out.
Realizing further conversation was pointless, Shin raised his hand, unleashing a surge of black mist that rapidly expanded outward. Danzo's eyes widened as he recognized the dark mist's devastating force. He dodged, knowing direct contact with the black mist would be fatal.
Seeing Shin's power, the Root ninjas scattered to avoid the mist. Undeterred, Shin continued to channel dark energy into the ground, activating his most potent technique. "Devouring Void!"
Darkness rippled outward, consuming everything in its path. From above, it looked as if a tenth of Konoha had vanished into a vast, inky chasm. Only the emergency shelters, where civilians had evacuated, remained untouched; otherwise, Shin would have hesitated to unleash such a deadly move on this scale.
"No! We have to stop him!" Danzo shouted, leaping from rooftop to rooftop as he struggled to avoid the powerful suction. Even the elite Root operatives found their chakra slipping from their control, many collapsing mid-attack as the dark void drained their chakra reserves.
Though a handful of the most skilled ninjas managed to launch attacks, Shin's body—hardened and enhanced by layers of haki—shrugged off their attempts with ease.
Buildings collapsed into the abyss, and the remaining Root ninjas could not escape. The darkness consumed everything, leaving only silence as each ninja fell to the overwhelming power.
As the last Root base sank into the darkness, Shin withdrew his hand, breathing heavily from the immense energy expenditure. The move had taken its toll on him, adding to the already heavy burden of energy he'd absorbed.
With the Root base successfully seized, Shin looked over the newly formed pit where it once stood, a grim satisfaction settling over him.
