Chapter 1: Between Hope and Rejection
Returning from his training with Jiraiya after two years, Naruto felt he had grown a lot, but more importantly, he had to keep a promise—something he had finally decided to fulfill upon his return.
"S-Sakura," he stammered, a nervous smile on his face as he struggled to find the right words. "It's been a while, and—"
"Spit it out already!" she interrupted, a bit annoyed. "I don't have time for this; Lady Tsunade is waiting for me."
Naruto stepped back, scratching the back of his head nervously. "Ah, yeah… of course. Actually, I just wanted to know if… you'd be free tonight?"
Sakura raised an eyebrow, eyeing him suspiciously. "For what?"
"Uh… just to grab a bowl of ramen at Ichiraku. To talk, that's all!" He clasped his hands together as if begging for mercy.
She sighed, crossing her arms. "Fine, but don't be late. I'm warning you—if this is a waste of my time…"
"Thank you, Sakura-chan! You'll see, it'll be quick!" he replied eagerly.
Without waiting for his response, she turned on her heels and walked away, leaving Naruto standing there, grinning like an idiot.
"I think that's a yes!" he thought, gently slapping his cheeks to keep himself focused.
As Sakura disappeared into the crowd, Naruto let out a sigh, running a hand through his messy hair.
"Man, I'm so bad at this stuff… She probably thinks I'm an idiot," he thought.
Still, a faint glimmer of hope remained. She had agreed to see him later. It was a start. A clumsy smile spread across his face as he resumed walking.
"Okay, Naruto, focus. Now all that's left is to tell her how I feel…" Lost in thought, he wandered aimlessly through the lively streets of Konoha.
The sun, now at its zenith, illuminated the red-tiled rooftops and wooden panels carved with family emblems, reflecting the vibrant soul of the Hidden Leaf Village.
Everything suddenly seemed… softer. Merchants appeared more cheerful and welcoming, calling out to villagers while praising their goods. Children ran around laughing, pretending to be their ninja heroes.
"I wonder what our kids would look like," he mused, watching the children.
It was as if he were seeing the village for the first time. Perhaps the saying that love makes fools of men wasn't so far from the truth…
"Naruto, what are you doing here?" A familiar voice snapped him out of his reverie.
"Tenten?" he turned to see her, a confused look on his face.
"We've been waiting for you for the mission, and here you are strolling around?"
"I was… thinking about important things," he replied nervously. "And, uh, I was just on my way."
She rolled her eyes. "Important things? Like what?"
"Well…" he began, fumbling for an excuse. Before he could answer, she interrupted, "Forget it, let's just go. We're late enough as it is."
The two headed toward the village gates, where the rest of the team had been waiting for quite some time.
Rock Lee was leaping through the air with boundless energy, while Gai-sensei, as flamboyant as ever, watched with pride.
"Lee! You are the embodiment of youth! Show me that triple spinning jump again!"
"Yes, Gai-sensei!" Lee replied, leaping with unyielding determination.
Not far away, Neji sat cross-legged, observing the scene with patience that barely masked his irritation.
"They should've been here twenty minutes ago…" he muttered, arms crossed, his sharp gaze fixed on the path ahead.
The sound of hurried footsteps broke the calm. Naruto and Tenten appeared, out of breath. Naruto, as usual, had a sheepish smile, while Tenten tried to maintain some semblance of composure.
"Sorry we're late!" Naruto called out, scratching his head.
"He… he was watching kids," Tenten added with a sigh, pointing at Naruto.
Neji stood, his Byakugan briefly flaring as he shot them a piercing look.
"You're ninjas, not civilians. Discipline is essential. This behavior is unacceptable."
"Oh, lighten up, Neji! We're here now, aren't we?" Naruto shot back, crossing his arms.
Tenten, irritated, chimed in:
"Neji's right, Naruto. We really should take this more seriously…"
Before the argument could escalate, Gai raised a dramatic hand.
"Enough! Dear students, the time has come for an exhilarating mission, and I refuse to let quarrels dull the flame of youth!"
Everyone gathered around their sensei, who pulled out a scroll from his pocket.
"Our mission is simple but crucial: escort a medicine merchant to a nearby village. There have been reports of recent bandit ambushes, and we must ensure his safety."
"Bandits?" Naruto exclaimed. "Easy—we'll crush them in no time!"
Neji sighed, but Gai, ever optimistic, smiled.
"Ah, Naruto, such confidence is wonderful to hear! But remember, even simple missions can hold surprises."
[...]
The team moved along a peaceful forest path, with the merchant walking cautiously in the middle of the group. Neji led the way, his Byakugan activated to spot potential threats. Lee and Gai enthusiastically discussed new training techniques, while Naruto and Tenten shared anecdotes, creating a relaxed atmosphere.
Neji abruptly stopped as they approached a bridge crossing a river.
"Four chakra signatures. Ambush, ten meters ahead."
Gai nodded firmly.
"Good. Defensive formation. Naruto, Lee, Tenten, handle them. Neji, protect the merchant."
Without hesitation, four masked figures emerged from the trees, kunai in hand. One of them threw a shower of shuriken as a warning.
"Hand over your goods, and maybe we'll let you live!" one of the bandits growled.
Naruto stepped forward confidently, cracking his knuckles.
"Is that all? You picked the wrong group to mess with!"
Creating two shadow clones, he charged straight at one of the bandits. His clones distracted the enemy while Naruto closed in for a direct attack, dodging counterattacks skillfully. With a spinning kick, he disarmed his opponent.
Meanwhile, Lee faced two enemies at once, his swift and precise movements leaving no room for retaliation.
"Gai-sensei, watch my ultimate technique!" he shouted, executing a flying kick that sent his targets reeling.
From a higher vantage point, Tenten launched a barrage of kunai, pinning another bandit in place. The weapons landed precisely around him, cutting off any chance of escape.
The last bandit attempted to flee, but Neji appeared in front of him, his Byakugan glowing intensely.
"You're not going anywhere."
In an instant, Neji struck several vital points, rendering the enemy incapacitated with minimal effort.
In less than five minutes, the bandits were subdued and securely tied up by the team.
The merchant, visibly impressed, bowed respectfully.
"Thank you—you've saved my life. You truly are extraordinary ninjas."
"It's all in a day's work! Protecting people is what we do!" Naruto replied, puffing out his chest with pride.
Neji, ever composed, simply nodded in agreement.
Gai burst into laughter.
"That's the team spirit I love to see! You've all proven that youth can overcome any obstacle!"
With the mission complete, Naruto headed home, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirling inside him.
The setting sun painted the sky in shades of orange, and the village of Konoha hummed with a peaceful serenity. After a quick bath and carefully selecting his outfit—his usual clothes but freshly ironed—Naruto stood in front of the mirror, taking a deep breath.
"This is it, Naruto! You've got this. Stay cool and don't mess it up!" he murmured, adjusting his forehead protector.
When he arrived at Sakura's house, his heart raced. She came out shortly after, her expression stoic. Her pink hair, shining in the last rays of daylight, framed her delicate face. Naruto felt his throat tighten.
"Hi, Sakura-chan! You look amazing tonight."
"Yeah. So, what's this about?" she replied, almost distractedly.
"Uh… Well… I thought we were going to Ichiraku for ramen. You didn't forget, right?"
She raised an eyebrow but eventually nodded.
"Alright, but let's not take too long. I have things to do afterward."
They walked together, Naruto clumsily trying to start conversations about anything—the day's fight, training, or funny stories about Jiraiya.
Sakura, as usual, was blunt at times and seemed distant, giving mechanical responses while observing the bustling streets around them.
Once they arrived at Ichiraku, Naruto ordered his favorite ramen, trying to hide his nervousness. Sakura, after a few bites, placed her bowl on the counter and looked directly at him.
"So, Naruto, what did you want to say? I don't have all night."
Naruto took a deep breath, his fists clenched under the table.
"Come on, you can do this. It's now or never."
His eyes met Sakura's. For a moment, he thought he saw a flicker of impatience, but he refused to let it shake him.
"Sakura-chan… I wanted to tell you that… I've always loved you."
The silence that followed was almost deafening, as if the world had stopped around them.
