Chapter 20: No One Can Betray Me

BANG!

Tsunade kicked open the door, looking completely impatient as she glared at the Third Hokage, who was sitting there, smoking. As soon as the smell hit her nose, she waved a hand in front of her face in disgust and snapped,

"Old man! What are you doing?"

Sarutobi Hiruzen caught the disdain in her eyes and couldn't help but twitch slightly.

What did I do to deserve these disciples? he thought bitterly.

Whether it was Tsunade or Jiraiya, neither of them had ever been easy to handle. Even his once-prized student, Orochimaru, had gradually drifted away over the years, obsessed with experiments and sinking further into moral depravity. And worst of all, he was getting closer to Danzo.

This troubled Hiruzen to no end.

With a sigh, he put out his pipe, exhaled a cloud of smoke, and walked over to open a window to air out the room. Only then did he sit back down and turn his attention to Tsunade.

"I heard you've taken Uchiha Kira as your disciple?" he asked.

"Tch."

Tsunade scoffed, crossing her arms as she gave him a look of pure disdain.

"It's been half a month. You already knew, so why bother asking?"

Hiruzen: "..."

Can't we have a normal conversation for once?

Am I too old to discipline you now, or have you just stopped respecting me altogether?

But when he thought of Nawaki and Dan, guilt flickered in his eyes. His tone softened slightly as he sighed and said,

"I know, but I still wanted to hear it from you directly. And to understand more about this Uchiha Kira."

"To be honest, I was surprised you took an Uchiha as a student," he admitted.

After all, the Senju and Uchiha had always been at odds. Their feud had lasted for centuries.

Of course, that wasn't his biggest concern—what really mattered to him was the problem with the Uchiha clan itself.

"That kid is a monster," Tsunade stated bluntly, still crossing her arms.

"In terms of medical ninjutsu and medical knowledge, his talent is unheard of—way beyond mine."

"He's only three years old, but through self-study alone, he's already grasped medical theory at the level of a Medical Corps jōnin."

"Of course, it's just theory for now," she added.

"But his learning ability and comprehension are terrifying. He picks up everything ridiculously fast."

"Right now, he's already mastered nearly all of my medical ninjutsu."

At this point, Tsunade's expression grew serious. She locked eyes with Hiruzen and warned,

"Listen, old man, I'm telling you now—he's my student, approved by me personally."

"I don't care what kind of shady plans you and the others have for the Uchiha—so long as I'm around, I won't allow anyone to target him or harm him in any way. If they try, don't blame me for turning against you all."

Hiruzen's face darkened, but Tsunade wasn't done.

She shot a glance toward the wooden wall on the right, then narrowed her eyes at Hiruzen and added coldly,

"And pass a message to that old bastard Danzo for me—if he so much as touches Kira, I'll cut his damn hands off."

"Don't think I don't know what really happened with Nawaki and Dan."

"If it weren't for the fact that Konoha was my grandfather and great-uncle's life's work, I would've torn this place apart and left a long time ago."

With that, she turned and stormed out, leaving Hiruzen sitting there, his face ashen.

"Sigh..."

After a long moment, he let out a deep sigh, picked up his pipe again, and took a few puffs before speaking toward the hidden door on his left.

"Alright, you can come out now. No need to keep hiding—Tsunade's already gone."

With a creak, the hidden door opened, and Danzo stepped out, his face just as dark as Hiruzen's.

"Look at the kind of disciples you've raised, Hiruzen!" he snapped before Sarutobi could say anything. "They don't just defy you—they dare to threaten me too! If this keeps up, what's next? She gonna challenge the entire village?!"

Hiruzen shot him a side glance and snorted.

"You don't need to lecture me on how to train my students."

"Besides, do you really not know why she's like this?"

"Don't act like you're innocent. You heard her—she's already found out a lot more than you thought."

"Why did you target Nawaki back then?" Hiruzen demanded, his expression darkening.

"And why did you send that Kato Dan to get close to her? What exactly were you trying to do?"

Hiruzen was furious.

The rift between him and his students? That was Danzo's doing.

His old friend had completely lost his moral compass.

Blinded by ambition, Danzo had always coveted the Hokage's seat, thinking Hiruzen didn't notice.

But did Danzo really think someone like him was fit to be Hokage?

Did he really believe he could lead Konoha?

"You're blaming me?!" Danzo glared at Hiruzen in disbelief.

"Everything I did was for you!"

"For years, I built up Root and handled all the dirty work you couldn't openly touch. Do you think you could've held onto your Hokage seat without me? Do you think you'd have the power you have now?"

His expression was that of someone who felt wronged, like a bitter housewife who had sacrificed everything only to be abandoned.

"And how many times do I have to say it?" Danzo continued. "Nawaki's death had nothing to do with me. And Kato Dan? That was his own decision! Don't pin it on me!"

The mere mention of Kato Dan made his blood boil.

That traitor.

He was supposed to get close to Tsunade, win her trust, and help Danzo control her.

But instead, the fool actually fell for her—and worse, betrayed him.

So Danzo had him eliminated.

"No one betrays me!" he seethed internally.

Hiruzen could see the delusion in Danzo's eyes and felt even more disgusted.

Even when the truth was staring him in the face, Danzo still refused to admit it.

He had no shame left.

And yet... Hiruzen still needed him.

He couldn't afford to completely break ties.

"Enough," Hiruzen said impatiently, waving his hand. "Let's drop this."

"You heard Tsunade—she values this student of hers. Just let it go."

"Stop meddling with Uchiha Kira. If you push too hard and provoke Tsunade, don't blame me if you end up suffering for it."

From Hiruzen's perspective, Tsunade taking Uchiha Kira as a disciple wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Ever since Kagami's death, the Uchiha had grown distant from the village. Their relationship with Konoha had soured significantly.

That wasn't what Hiruzen wanted.

He did want to suppress the Uchiha's arrogance.

But he also wanted to bring them fully under his control.

The Uchiha were strong, after all—an incredibly powerful tool.

And Konoha still needed them to maintain its position in the ninja world.

Now, with Uchiha Kira as Tsunade's disciple, that made him Hiruzen's grand-disciple in a way.

And since Kira was the son of Uchiha Chikazu, a key figure in the younger generation and the Vice Captain of the Konoha Police Force...

Hiruzen saw an opportunity.

"I should find a chance to meet this Uchiha Kira. If he's promising, I'll pull him in, groom him, and mold his loyalty."

"If the time is right, I could even push him to power within the Uchiha clan—helping me gain control over them once and for all."

He smirked slightly at the thought.
