Chapter 18: 18. Not All Magic Needs to be Flashy

While my group of friends were training with Cedric, I was thinking about how to get past the Dragon.

Actually, I've been thinking about it for a long time, but I hadn't come up with a really viable idea yet.

It wouldn't be like Harry Potter, summoning a broom, flying around, causing the death of a dragon, without hurting any of the judges, at least a little, breaking myself apart, to get an egg just over 20 meters away from me.

During study time with Hermione, after finishing our homework, and some hot kisses and make-outs, I was reading some of the books she had, as well as complementing what the library had.

I wasn't a genius, far from it, but somehow, what I was studying, in my mind, seemed to become a kind of code.

Structuring a rune, in an alchemical circle, and using it to transfigure was a simple and basic thing. For example, using a transmutation circle, the earth rune for iron for example, then attaching the appropriate runes in the appropriate slots and then applying the finished 'code' to a suitable surface, in this case, a stone floor, or directly to a stone.

The most laborious part was having the runes memorized, which was not difficult, since some runes served several purposes in different situations. For example, the rune ("(3)") can be used to channel magic, to strengthen protections, to create a healing area or simply to describe magic.

The big problem with this type of magic, despite being much stronger and more effective, was the casting time. It was necessary to write the rune, which was quite time-consuming, given the level of delicacy involved in the process.

So I had the idea of writing the rune I needed in the air, structuring the transmutation circle, stabilizing the 'code' and then carving it into the object I needed. Remembering Tom, showing his anagram in the air, and even scrambling the letters, gave me this idea.

Along with that, casting the 'code' on the object was the hardest part, because on some surfaces, it can deform, even if minimally, and that's not a good thing.

I then started practicing assembling the rune, and how to carve it into surfaces. Most of the time, I was doing this near the Lake, where there were more rocks so I could practice and study where the mistakes were, and get as close to perfection as possible.

When Hermione discovered, or rather, extracted my idea from my mouth, she started training with me. She said that this would help her in her Rune classes, and when she presented it to her teacher, she would be able to know how far she had studied.

I was simply happy for her. First, because she would never take my idea as her own, to take credit. Not like a certain envious redhead I know. 'I think old Harry's feelings are leaving a strong mark on me.' I thought with a sigh.

-----

Cedric had been using the Room of Requirement for a while longer, to practice and study what he was going to do against his dragon. As expected, Hagrid took me to see the dragons, but the one who warned me this time was not Ron through his riddle, but Neville.

Apparently, Hagrid tried to talk to Ron, but the boy was nothing short of rude, even insulting the half-giant. Of course his actions had consequences, since Neville was nearby, and he wasted no time in telling the Twins and Ginny.

I asked if Cedric needed help, but he said no. Well, there was a reason, since I would also need to face a dragon, and he was worried about helping me instead.

After explaining that he already had an idea, we decided to take turns in the Room of Requirement.

However, since my training method was much more relaxed, I told him to use the room for as long as he needed, and that I would do my training at the lake, where it was better and safer for me.

I had to explain that what I wanted to do could go very wrong and end up causing a fire or simply exploding. Being at the edge of the lake was a way to have a soft landing in case of an explosion, and an easier place to put out the fire in case of a fire.

------

After receiving the most loving kiss of good luck of my life, at least in this life, I was holding my miniature Hungarian Horntail and watching each of the competitors go face their dragons.

The sounds, despite being muffled in the tent, still gave me some kind of distraction. I was having them while I went over everything I had tested and done right and wrong. I tried to stay as focused as possible, but sometimes I fell a little.

Heavy applause told me that Cedric had managed to get past his dragon. Leaving my miniature on the table, I took out my wand and stood at the entrance, waiting for the signal. There was no point in trying to start writing the rune now, because I wouldn't be able to move it until I finished.

I also wanted the others to see me doing it from the beginning, just so none of them would have the audacity to say that I cheated.

*BOOM*

As soon as the sound of the cannon reached my ears, silence reigned.

My focus went to the peak, and the only sound I could hear was the breathing of the great dragon in front of the tent's exit. He or she wasn't close, but I could see him or her very clearly. Likewise, he or she saw me from afar, and roared in defiance.

I began to advance, until I was a good distance away from the dragon. He roared, releasing a huge puff of flames, which, even though I was behind a large rock, the heat almost cooked me.

Knowing that I had a safe time, I began to draw my rune in the air. I was working extremely focused, very carefully so as not to make any mistakes. Almost 1 minute and a half later, I finished, and realized I was taking so long.

On average, I would have done it in a little over half a minute, but my nervousness made me do it more slowly and smoothly, safely. Then I maneuvered the rune to one of the gigantic stones on the right side of the dragon.

Another 1 minute and a half later, I was finishing the second one, and directing it to the stones on the left side. After seeing that they were well placed and had not 'stained', I took a deep breath.

'Time to Shine, baby', I thought to myself, coming out from behind the rock where I was.

Moving my wand, just like my left hand seemed to hold a ball of air, almost like the scene of Dumbledore fighting Voldemort, holding the sphere of water, but in my case, it was for another purpose.

It needed to be like this, because it would be a way to erase the movement of the wand in case of a mistake. These technicalities that make runic magic so little developed and used, even though they are much stronger.

But now it didn't matter. IT WORKED.

Chains of stone began to come out of the rocks to the right and left of the dragon. This took him by surprise, as the chains followed my wand, like a conductor conducting his choir. The chains tightly held the dragon's front legs.

They ran through his body, wrapping around him like snakes about to strangle their prey. His wings seemed to be attached in a crooked and wrong way, and so I didn't tighten them too much, so as not to cause more pain and suffering to the dragon.

It may seem silly, but she/he is as much a victim of the situation as I am.

After trapping the dragon, I gave the final touch. "Gravis somnus Ray", and a jet of yellowish-white light came from the tip of my wand, hitting the dragon between its eyes. I had to cast 3 more of these, until the creature finally fell asleep.

Still cautious, I cast a shield around me, then moved towards the eggs, and picked up my golden egg. After raising it and presenting it to the judges and audience, I headed towards the competitors' tent, where Madame Pomfrey was waiting for me at the door.
