Inside the studio, a constant stream of bustling people moved through the corridors. Shinjii Takahashi sat alone in his office, like a self-isolated puppet, meticulously writing down important notes on rolls of white paper. A successful television program required an unprecedented amount of human and material resources.
Though only a single character separated their titles, the positions of assistant director and lead director were worlds apart. As an assistant director, Shinjii Takahashi was primarily responsible for the promotional videos.
This included promotional content, individual music videos (MVs), post-production, and for the final rounds (e.g., top eight to top four, top four to finalists), shooting documentaries for each eliminated participant.
This culinary show, "Midnight Chef," was certainly positioned as variety entertainment, but it was far from a traditional variety show. A variety show without substance was merely a farce. A good variety show, one that leaves a lasting impression, possessed a core content that shone brightly and provoked deeper thought.
Tokyo TV aimed to produce a variety show with content, ideas, and a clear stance. Choosing "cuisine" as its theme already created a stark contrast with most variety shows. Its core had extensions, points that viewers could discuss or even debate, and at the very least, it was a program where one could learn something and understand industry knowledge.
"Takahashi." Someone suddenly clapped Shinjii Takahashi on the shoulder.
"There's a handsome guy over there filming a promo. I heard you found him, as expected of you," the man who walked over said, putting his hand on Shinjii Takahashi's shoulder, his tone ambiguous.
"Please don't approach me with a tone that praises gay men, okay? Let me emphasize again, I, Shinjii Takahashi, am male, I like women, and preferably 18-year-old JK who can wear stockings and cosplay," Shinjii Takahashi said with a look of disdain.
"Kyoto University really churns out perverted gentlemen like you, huh," the man said, laughing.
"No, it's just to prove my gender preference," Shinjii Takahashi said, somewhat helplessly. "Don't assume I'm gay just because I'm nearly thirty and don't have a girlfriend! Domoto, I don't want to emphasize this a second time."
"Heh, not only no girlfriend, but I bet you're still a virgin. With your way of talking, I doubt you can even communicate with women," Tomoi Domoto said mockingly and sarcastically. They were both staff members of the same team, usually quite close, and loved to tease and joke with each other.
"A virgin? Then I'll have to warn you, last time I went to a pleasure establishment, I used twelve condoms in one night. Everyone said I was too fierce and told me not to go to their place to ruin girls anymore."
"Do you, an impotent man, understand the true strength of an iron-blooded tough guy like me?"
"When I'm lying in bed, I'm taller than you are when you're standing," Shinjii Takahashi bristled at the word "virgin," as if his tail had been stepped on. However, Tomoi Domoto was right; he was indeed a virgin and didn't even dare to look at pleasure establishments. But how could he admit he wasn't capable of such things?
Haha, Tomoi Domoto was satisfied when he heard that. He knew Shinjii Takahashi had been provoked when he said such things, and Tomoi Domoto felt incredibly pleased. Darn virgin.
"But seriously, I only found two people," Shinjii Takahashi said, somewhat surprised. The two people he invited were both brought in from Totsuki Academy. "Why is it causing such a commotion?" Shinjii Takahashi hesitated.
"I'm not entirely sure, but it seems that male chef you found, after getting his makeup done and putting on a suit, was spotted by a talent scout," Tomoi Domoto explained. Tokyo TV also had talent scouts on staff.
A talent scout, as the name suggests, is someone who discovers individuals with celebrity potential. In simple terms, their job is to search for suitable "new talents" in streets and crowds, based on the requirements of various clients. During grassroots auditions, many talent scouts would poach artists who failed their interviews.
Some lucky ones would go to good studios under the guidance of a scout and quickly rise to fame, while for the unlucky ones, it depended on the situation; some would simply give up, while others would try to muddle through until they disappeared. However, talent scouts at major TV stations were generally more legitimate.
But seriously.
"Isn't this basically stealing our people?" Shinjii Takahashi thought for a moment. Tokyo TV had dedicated talent scouts to discover new talent, and both this department and their program team certainly served Tokyo TV. However, even if they all worked for the same TV station, they weren't part of the same department. This kind of poaching was an overstep! Shinjii Takahashi sat up. "Come on, let's go take a look."
...
"I told you, it's not suitable to wear a suit here," Renz said in a low voice. "You insisted I wear it and even put makeup on me, making it seem like I'm going to some awards ceremony." Renz could only offer a helpless smile to the people around him. But the crowd of onlookers grew larger and larger.
Some people, without changing their clothes or putting on makeup, would never know how handsome they truly were. Renz had always had good looks; when he was a professional gamer in China, he already had many "face fans."
However, Renz had always dismissed them as joking, teasing anti-fans. More importantly, people who played e-sports were generally not handsome. Renz, among them, stood out like a crane among chickens.
Some fans even joked that if he couldn't make money playing professionally someday, they suggested he switch to being a male model. This was originally just a jest, and since Renz didn't really think he was that handsome, he didn't take these things seriously. But after Erina put light makeup on him, covering some tiny blemishes on his face, and he changed into a suit, it seemed these Japanese people really did think he was quite handsome?
"Sir, this is my business card. If you're interested in what I discussed earlier, please feel free to contact me anytime." The middle-aged man in front of him took out a business card and handed it to Renz. Renz couldn't very well throw it away in front of him, so he took it. This man, who claimed to be a talent scout from Tokyo TV, was immediately taken with Renz. He began with a string of "praises" and then started recruiting him, planning for Renz to join Tokyo TV's studio and become a professional artist.
He talked a lot of nonsense, and Renz actually wanted to chase him away long ago, but out of politeness, he listened to the end. The gist was that they would provide professional training to help Renz smoothly transition through the awkward period of only relying on "looks" and "charisma."
"Erina, I seem to be a handsome guy," Renz quietly said to the person beside him. Erina rolled her eyes. She couldn't take it anymore. Just because I've never praised your handsomeness, don't you dare think you're not good-looking, okay?
"Super handsome, actually," Erina replied softly. Akemi Tenzaki took a deep breath. Boss, I'm quitting this job. Can they not calm down?
Can they seriously not calm down? From sleeping to waking up, to eating breakfast, to helping him get dressed and groomed, and now this, have they ever stopped? Huh? If Akemi Tenzaki had a table in front of her, she would probably raise her hand, clench it into a fist, and bang it hard on the table to intimidate these two little lovebirds.
Are these flashes of affection endless? Did your flashes come with a cheat code? Do they have infinite throws?
