Chapter 20: What's wrong with my dress
She ordered Jacob and Abe to stay with Lucile and I while she took the rest to chase the intruders. I could feel my heart pound in my chest, every hair on my skin stood up as these goosebumps spread through me.
Oh goodness! They found us!
And because of me, Alexa and her travelling companions were in mortal danger.
"This is all my fault. It's me he wants…maybe if I offer myself to them, they would spare you and…"
"Abigail? Shut up!" Lucile snapped at me.
I stayed quiet for a few seconds but I wasn't one to follow orders anyway.
"I should help Alexa. I am going to help Alexa"
"No, don't…"
I didn't wait for Lucile to finish talking when I took off. I barely made it to where Alexa was when I saw her push someone against the tree.
"Who are you? And why are you following me?"
The shadowy figure was wearing a cloak that covered their face and every part of their body.
"Who are you?!" Alexa yelled as she pulled the cloak away revealing a teenage girl, she was barely thirteen years of age.
I saw how fast Alexa took her hand away from the girl's throat. I was confused, did my cousin send a child to kill me this time around?
I don't…I don't think…it doesn't make any sense.
"Who are you?" I asked the girl.
"I don't know, ask Alpha Alexandrina!" The girl yelled as she rubbed her wrist like she had been injured in her fight against the girl they keep calling Alpha.
I looked at Alexa and she was quiet.
"Or maybe she doesn't remember!" she yelled again.
"I do"
It was the only thing Alexa said but her eyes went to the girl's hand like she was barely restraining herself from saying 'ARE YOU HURT?"
"Is that all you have to say?" the girl asked her.
Alexa was quiet instead she stared at the floor instead.
"Is that all you have to say?!" she yelled this time around.
Alexa didn't flinch.
"I am sorry but did I come all the way here to have you say 'I do'? is that all you are going to say?" the girl was quiet for a few seconds like she was giving Alexa a chance to say something but she didn't.
I saw her wipe her teary face with the back of her palm and she sniffed back. When she looked at Alexa again, she had this look in her eyes. It looked like her mind was made up.
"Well, you can bloody go to hell and do me a favor, stay there"
She said and took off into the forest.
Alexa cleared her throat and looked at John. "Fetch her please…before she gets herself in trouble or worse"
I watched as John went after her and I turned to Alexa.
"Why is she so angry at you?" I asked.
"I wouldn't know, I haven't seen her since she was two and half of age" Alexa answered.
"So, you know her?" Lucile asked.
"Of course. Her name is Mia and she's my daughter"
I blinked once again.
"Wait what?"
The rest of our journey to Zurich was taken in silence…awkward silence. The tension between Mia and Alexa was as high as a horse fence.
I did my best not to stare but it was really impossible not to. When we got close enough to the capital, I felt the need to ask my savior some questions.
Maybe she could help me understand why she would go through the trouble of saving a total stranger like me, safely deliver me to the capital without taking gold or pennies but had no trouble abandoning her daughter for years.
I hastened up to catch up with Alexa since she was walking as fast as she could like she wanted to give a distance between a sulking Mia and herself.
I walked up to her as we were entering the market of Zurich, it was noisy and if I am going to buffer a reconciliation between mother and daughter, I had to speak louder than normal.
"Alexa, maybe if you sit down and talk to Mia, you can…"
I hardly finished my sentence when she stopped and looked me dead in the eyes. It made me stop talking.
"This is where we part ways, Abigail. We are in Zurich" her eyes told me it wasn't a decision she was going to change no matter how hard I pushed and I can be adamant but I was no fool either.
I gripped my satchel tighter and I nodded. She took a step away from me and then as she walked away from me, I spoke.
"Thank you for saving my life. If you ever need my help…"
"I won't" she murmured and kept walking.
I bid goodbye to Lucile and I watched them disappear into the market.
I started walking towards the castle, barely made it to the gate when I came face to face with Sir Bastian, his countenance was a mixture of shock and relief.
"Lady Abigail!"
"Oh no!" I turned around and ran.
I bumped into someone.
"Alexa!"
"Oh great! It is you" she sounded disappointed. The reason for this eluded me.
"Hide me! They are after me!" I yelled and got behind her but she just kept walking and left me behind.
I followed her. "Alexa, wait!"
"Go away, Abigail. I have enough problem without you"
I looked around but she was alone. I wondered where everyone else was.
"Where is Mia? Did you send her away?"
She hastened up and I followed her. Alexa walked away like the very ground beneath our feet was lava.
She walked like she was running away from something.
It made me realize that everyone has a story…stories they would rather keep to themselves than share with a stranger or friends.
Stories that would make one cry and sometimes laugh, heartache that keeps them awake at night, memories that make them smile just before they fall asleep, regrets and accomplishment.
Everyone has a story and prying it out of them wasn't fair
Everyone has a tale to tell and just as overwhelming as my life is right now, it might just be like that for her too.
I stopped walking and said something i wish someone had said to me in these past few days.
"I am sorry" i exhaled.
She stopped and looked at me.
"Why are you sorry, Abigail?" she asked me.
"I am sorry things just became a tad more difficult. I am sorry you are having a hard time. I am sorry about Mia. it can't be easy seeing your daughter after all these years, Alexa. I am sorry you can't tell me or Mia why you left her because you are a kind person, Alexa. You are a kind person even when you didn't have to be. I will leave you alone now" i said and turned around to keep running but she spoke to me.
"Seeing Mia is the eqivalent of being knocked down by a furious bull. I don't want my daughter here…i don't want her anywhere near me. It is why i will be travelling alone now. I have to kill Aldous Raven and i want Mia to not be here when i do that" she turned around and looked at me.
"I can't help you, Abigail. I have my demon to face and you have yours. The sooner i kill the ulgy bastard, the sooner i can get my daughter back. You can stay with my pack for the night but tomorrow, you must leave. I can't help"
I nodded. She already saved me once and that was enough.
She started walking away.
"That is alright…I will leave tomorrow. i just have to find my way back to the palace. Markle will protect me"
"First Prince Markle?" she asked and stopped at once.
"Yes. I am to wedd him but his uncle is my demon. He kidnapped me and now, i am running from his men but if i can make it to the gate of the palace they will let me in"
"I am sorry but did you say you could walk right in to the palace through the front gate and no one would stop you?"
She took a step closer to me and her eyes dimmed considerably at me. She bit her lower lip as she pulled on her shirt. If i didn't know better i would say she was hatching something terrible. I was becoming apprehensive but she smiled warmly at me. It was strange.
I didn't know Alpha Alexa could smile.
"It turns out i can help you, Abigail. But we are going to need a carriage and some change of clothing for our journey Tomorrow"
"What is wrong with my dress?" i asked her but she kept walking.
"Are you coming?!" she yelled.
"Yes! But what is wrong with my dress?!"
