Chapter 269
269 Mysterious Force Behind The Shamans (2)
(Tom’s PoV)
“Send as many shadows as you can to haunt this man’s house.”
That was the order the man received. It sounded reckless and annoying, and there was something wrong with the order. Of course, the message didn’t specify what type of shadow should be sent to fulfill the order, which was probably the reason why they had not sent any high level shadows to the house.
Or, maybe the low levels were sent to scout the situation.
Whatever the reason was, now that we knew there was someone out there wanting to create a mess in our house, there was no way we would let it happen. Every wickedness needed to be uprooted to avoid further hassle.
Jane took out her phone and showed him a picture. “Is this the man you’re talking about?”
It was her father’s picture. The man nodded his head. “That’s right. It’s him!”
Sending shadows to haunt the house, what did the person behind this action want? Mostly, people would send shadows to create disturbance in a house. It could be a severe illness, bad luck, or even instant kill for the person they hated. However, judging from the way those shadows were invading the front and back yard of the house, they were really harmless, in spite of their insidious appearances.
“Are there no more messages after that?”
.....
“No. There’s no more messages for me after all. I don’t know about the others, though.” The man shook his head.
“Are you saying the truth?” I squinted my eyes and shot him a look full of suspicion.
“Of course! I dare not lying to you.” The man hastily replied, as if he would be tortured if he were late to answer the question.
“There must be someone among you who received another mission from your employer.” Jane’s eyes were peering into those spirits’ eyes, trying to find any unnatural expression in their face.
BINGO!
There was someone who acted unusual after those words were spoken. She averted her eyes and there was a trace of panic on her face. Jane smirked and I knew someone was going to be into deep trouble. Maybe she didn’t realize it, but Jane was a whole different person when dealing with astral issues. She was obviously the youngest in our group, but she turned into a cold-blooded leader when she dealt with shadows.
“I’ll deal with her. Can you torture them for a while before you send them back? Thank you.” She didn’t ask for my my agreement. She was ordering me politely, even with a smile. After doing so, she walked towards the bench in the garden and sat down elegantly. The one that she asked for and the shadows under her were following her steps under my manipulation.
Sanji and I exchanged a knowing look. Since the rest of them weren’t needed here, we might as well send them back with a little souvenir. It didn’t take long for us to get rid of the disturbance, and after we cleaned up, we let Jane have her fun in interrogating and torturing the stubborn shaman.
Those shamans that we sent off, I hoped they knew the consequences of messing around with us now and learned from it. As far as I knew, no shamans were capable of hurting her. Those shadows were sent only to haunt, not to harm anyone. Jane had also ordered to let them enter the yard as long as they were not causing any casualties. She might have thought that those shadows were just lost and only passing by. Only after we noticed the number increase each day that we started taking action.
Why did she order so? She once said that was to create a balance environment. A clean surrounding was nice, but it would mean the balance would be broken. Also, the existence of the shadows and ghosts in the yard was meant to make her house felt as common as the other house. It was to avoid any unnecessary attraction coming from ‘gifted’ people.
Tonight was a special occasion where no other ghosts would come around. With how Jane’s aura was soaring, I doubted they would want to get close -those shadows and the shaman must be feeling dreadful being that close to her. Even after I called some of the men back to reduce the pressure, those ghosts didn’t dare to approach the house.
“Who do you think the one behind this prank?” I asked Sanji who was playing with his sharp thread with his fingers.
“Do you think it’s just a prank?” Sanji kept his eyes on his palm, but it seemed like his eyes saw through them.
“Sending shadows to haunt a place instead of scaring or harming the people, if it’s not a prank, then it’s spying.” I looked up at the night sky with a sigh.
“Indeed.” Sanji responded.
He was acting a bit strange. He didn’t talk much lately. It was as if he was drowned in his own world. But, anything related to Jane’s safety would make him more serious than anyone. I knew that he was secretly training himself, just like how I secretly trained myself, but his changes were too obvious to ignore.
As the person who once clashed with him, I knew him better than anyone. He seemed to talk less and less after the incident with the portal. He might blame himself for not being able to help much, but I wasn’t better myself. I left her in his hand out of my own selfishness -and I regretted it so much every day. He had done his best to help her in clearing the first portal when I only appeared on the last minute like a fool. I had done my best to have a truce with my own self, to allow myself a better self-development. I changed as well, of course. But, other than the time when I was the General of White Army, I was still the usual me.
But, Sanji changed a lot that I was almost sure he was not the same person anymore. Other than his concern towards Jane’s safety, he was almost like another person.
“Are you okay?” I asked him out of my concern towards him.
Sanji chuckled and shot me a teasing look. “What? Being unable to touch her making you diverting your attention to me? Sorry, I know that I’m handsome but I don’t swing that way.”
Hah! Forget what I thought that he was another person. He was the real Sanji! Only he could annoy me with a simple sentence.
“Forget that I ask.” I waved my hand in annoyance. “It’s only a matter of time until I can touch her. You know that, too. The only thing that stand between me and her is the status of our relationship. What our parents told us about the forbidden sex before marriage is real, after all.”
Sanji snorted and chuckled. “I planned to take things slowly and ravish her on our wedding night. But your appearance made me lose control of my own self. The girl that I had cherished so much suddenly emitted sexual pheromone in full force with another man in her arms, how could I not snap? I wanted to blame you, but I couldn’t. I could only blame my own weak will to go back on my own words. This way is also good. Both of us can focus on protecting her instead of being aroused with every teasing touch she makes. I can also feel my power getting clearer and purer to the point it is easier to control. It seems like being abstained from any sexual activity is good for nurturing our spiritual power.”
I laughed hearing his confession. He was right. After abstaining from touching Jane sexually, I could feel my spiritual power was expanding. It was also easier for me to feel my power and to use it to my own needs. My mind was getting clearer and the bond between me and the Death Volcano was getting stronger. It was even easier to manipulate the form of my power and the chain to my own will. All this time, the only thing that blocked me from advancing further was my own relationship with my girlfriend.
Not the relationship, but the thing we did in our relationship.
This kind of rules sounded too personal, but it was to our own benefits, after all.
My train of thoughts was abruptly stopped when a shrill cry was heard from where Jane was. My body went on auto pilot as I ran towards her without observing the source of cry first. As my eyes and brain caught up with my body, I saw Jane being enveloped in her light smoke as the shadows and the spirit of the shaman were attacking her like madmen. I clenched my fist towards them and my loosened chain wrapped them up again tighter.
There was another cry and suddenly, the chain broke. My fingers went numb as the backlash, but I quickly summoned another chain -thicker this time -and tried to wrap them up. The key word is ‘tried’. I failed as they evaded it quickly and floated higher. The thick black smoke emitted from their bodies made them look like they were about to blend with the night sky.
“Are you okay?” I asked as I stood outside her barrier of smoke. Clearly she was still on her guard.
She nodded. “Someone is manipulating them right now.” She sounded cold as her eyes kept following the movement of the shadows and their master.
“Well, well, well. Isn’t it the young girl Jane Harris? Long time no see, Jane, and you’re already this big. Your father must be proud of you following his steps to deal with the other world.”
It should be a compliment but there was no trace of sincerity in it. Instead, it sounded so sarcastic to my ears. Also, that was not the shaman’s voice. Jane must have done something that made the mastermind behind the shaman came forward. But, that shaman was in her spirit form, how could a spirit get possessed?
