NOVEL NEXT Chapter 17: The attack
Alex and Sophia didn't know that someone of high status was already planning against them as they walked towards the car.
Alex, what was that?, Sophia asked.
Huh?, Alex turned to look at her, confused.
What?, he asked her.
What's actually going on between you and that man? Sophia asked, her confusion evident. The two of you were at each other's throats just now. Do you know him?
No, I don't know him, Alex said and continued, I don't know what I've done to make him angry. Maybe it's because I'm too good at winning and he kept losing.
Remember I told you about how these rich and influential bastards think, right?he asked.
Sophia, not knowing what he was getting at, answered, Hmm, yes.
Alex continued, It's mainly their nature. They'll do anything to accumulate more wealth, not wanting to lose a penny. That's why that guy in there can't bear to lose and got angry. I bet he's even cursing me now. Alex spoke, trying to get her mind off the topic.
Alex knew that the man in purple was a werewolf, and he didn't want Sophia to have any dealings or relationships with the Veiled World. He knew how dangerous this world of supernaturals was and how they held grudges. It was mainly because of this that he was already figuring out a way to protect both Sophia and her family from the Veiled.
But you should have let him win, right?, Sophia asked.
Why? Alex asked.
To avoid trouble, of course,Sophia said and continued. If you knew he was going to get angry because of your consistent wins, you should have let him simply win. I know that there are some rich and influential figures out there who would and can go to any extreme and do anything if they are simply humiliated.
She would rather prefer not to be the target of these rich and influential figures.
Hm, you're right, Alex said, nodding.
The two walked to the car, where the driver was already waiting, smiling and opening the door for both of them before closing it.
Where are we heading, sir? he asked as he sat in the driver's seat.
Drive to Sophia's house; we're dropping her off first, Alex replied.
Sophia, hearing this, nodded her head, saying, Yes, drop me off at my house.
Okay, sir, the driver replied and began driving.
There was silence in the car, both Alex and Sophia lost in their thoughts. Sophia turned her head to the other side, looking outside at the quiet and peaceful road. The streetlights glowed brightly, illuminating her beautiful face.
And she couldn't help but think about how her life had changed to this point. She turned to Alex for a while, then turned back, smiling, grateful, and appreciative of the man in her heart. She would never forget this.
But in a split second, "Bang!!!!" a gun was fired, and everything stopped. The only sound heard was "Swissssshhhh," indicating the tire had been busted already.
Sophia nearly had a heart attack as her heart leaped, scared. She turned to Alex, only to find him looking composed. She also turned to the driver, but was surprised to see him composed as well, as if nothing could faze the both of them.
"Bang!!!! Bang!!!! Bang!!!! Bang!!!!" Four gunshots sounded again. This time, Sophia screamed and ducked. Alex, seeing her like this, was calm, but if anyone looked closely, they would see his nails elongated, his hands clenched, his jaw tightening, and his eyes turning golden. Anger had taken over.
We're getting attacked, sir, the driver said.
I see, Alex answered, his face devoid of emotion, his voice cold. But in a second, he calmed and returned to his normal appearance. He turned to Sophia, his voice gentle, soft, and sweet, as if he was coaxing a child.
Sophia, look at me, he said.
Sophia, hearing his voice, turned to him.
Everything is going to be okay, but I need you to do one thing for me. Close your eyes for a while, and once you open them, everything will get back to normal, he said.
Sophia nodded and did exactly that.
Alex turned to the driver, Protect her with your life. If anything happens to her, I will make you wish you were dead.
I will protect her with my life, sir, the driver replied.
Good, Alex said, his appearance changing slightly as he opened the door and stepped out of the car.
