Chapter 138 The Vicissitudes of Life
At this moment, with her by his side, nothing else seemed to matter.
Zhou Jiajia also quietly nestled in Lin Yifan's embrace, enjoying the protection of this passionate and strong man.
After embracing for a while, Lin Yifan's hands began to itch again, and slowly started moving downward.
However, just then, Zhou Jiajia's phone rang.
Zhou Jiajia felt that the call was from her parents, so she quickly took out her phone to check, and sure enough, it was from her parents.
"Who is it?" Lin Yifan asked with a frown, slightly annoyed at the interruption of his plans.
"It's my mom!" Zhou Jiajia whispered in response, then walked to the side to answer the call, "Hello! Mom, what's up?"
"Why haven't you come back so late, where have you been loitering?" a scolding voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Mom! Didn't I tell you? I'm having dinner with An Qi at the Seaside Grand Restaurant," Zhou Jiajia answered.
"You've been eating for two or three hours? Tell me where you really are!" Zhou's mother demanded.
She felt that something was amiss, fearful that her daughter might have secretly slept with that economically challenged bodyguard to blackmail them.
"I'm at the hospital now," Zhou Jiajia replied truthfully.
"Why at the hospital? You're not having an abortion, are you?" Zhou's mother asked worriedly, her tone tinged with anger.
"Mom, why are you thinking so much? An Qi fainted, and she's been admitted to the hospital, so I'm staying by her side," Zhou Jiajia replied irritably.
"How could she just faint all of a sudden?" Zhou's mother inquired.
"Zhao Ritian drugged our food; he had designs on both me and An Qi," Zhou Jiajia answered.
"Drugged? Then... daughter, have you been violated?" Zhou's mother asked expectantly, seemingly unconcerned.
"No! Fortunately, Yifan stepped in to save us, or else I would have been in that villain's clutches," Zhou Jiajia replied, then looked at the robust man beside her with a smile, feeling fantastic.
"What is that troublemaker doing causing such trouble? Ah, what a pity! What a pity that I missed out on a golden son-in-law," Zhou's mother lamented deeply.
Zhao Ritian's father was the richest man in Guiyuan City, with a fortune of several tens of billions. Marrying into such a wealthy family would have been marvelous.
Hearing this, Lin Yifan felt pity for Zhou Jiajia, having such a mercenary mother made happiness difficult to achieve.
"Mom! How can you say such a thing? A bad man like Zhao Ritian, who goes after other women despite being engaged, would not bring happiness to anyone who marries him," Zhou Jiajia replied, her heart ice cold.
Her own mother wouldn't help her denounce the villain, and now she was even helping the villain by ridiculing her rescuer. She was utterly speechless and deeply chilled.
"You don't know anything. Marrying into a wealthy family, you can enjoy endless glory and wealth, then you can do whatever you want and be extremely happy," Zhou's mother retorted.
"Mom! There are many things money can't give, like happiness; what's the point of holding a bunch of gold and jewelry every day?"
"What's the point? If you gave me a bunch of gold and jewelry, I guarantee I wouldn't have time to bother about you," Zhou's mother countered.
Zhou Jiajia was exasperated, having such a mother was both pitiable and tragic. Fortunately, she had a man who loved her by her side; otherwise, she wouldn't even want to live in this world anymore.
"I don't want to talk about this anymore, Mom! Do you have anything else to say?" Zhou Jiajia was already fed up and didn't want to say more to her mercenary mother.
"Yes!" Zhou's mother replied.
"What's the matter?" Jiajia asked.
"Come back to me right now!" Jiajia's mother commanded on the other end of the phone.
She would not allow her daughter to stay with that not-so-wealthy bodyguard.
"An Qi is now lying in the hospital bed, she needs to be taken care of, I can't leave," Jiajia refused flatly.
"The matters of others are for them to handle, you shouldn't get involved—come back quickly," her mother continued to command.
"What do you mean by 'others'? Weren't our two families very close before? Why have they become 'others' now?" Jiajia was really puzzled.
"The past is the past, and now is now; the An family is no longer promising, we need to find another way out," her mother replied bluntly, without evasion.
"Mom! How can you be so cold?" Jiajia was very confused.
Her mother, diligent and sensible in the past, seemed like a completely different person now, and it was unclear what had caused this.
"Do I call this cold? I call this survival of the fittest!" her mother vehemently countered, clearly disagreeing with her daughter's view.
"Survival of the fittest allows you to be indifferent and inhumane? Survival of the fittest allows you to leave a friend in life-and-death behind? Survival of the fittest allows you to discard all past emotions? What a formidable 'survival of the fittest' indeed." Jiajia scoffed repeatedly, truly feeling the chill of human nature.
"I won't argue with you; come back to me right now," her mother commanded again, obviously angry as well.
"I won't come back!" Jiajia responded firmly.
"If you don't come back, I will jump from the building and kill myself!" her mother threatened on the other end of the phone.
"Mom! Why do you have to force me like this?" Jiajia was helpless.
"You are the one forcing me; you have half an hour. If you don't come back, I will jump from the building and commit suicide," she said, then hung up the phone.
"Wu wu!"
Jiajia threw herself into Yifan's arms and wept bitterly, feeling both helpless and in deep pain.
"How could I have a mother like this? Why do I have to have such a mother?" Jiajia sobbed while murmuring to herself.
"Alright! Stop crying! A person's values can sometimes change with life's circumstances; without doubt, to a hard-working person, money becomes essential," Yifan consoled her.
"Is money really that important?" Jiajia was somewhat puzzled.
"Haven't you heard the saying? Money isn't everything, but without money, you can't do anything. If you don't want to live a primitive life, then you definitely need money," Yifan replied.
"Then give you a choice; on one side is the disappearing wealth, on the other is a relative in mortal danger. Would you choose money, or relationships?" Jiajia asked.
"Of course relationships. Relationships can't be bought with money, they are more noble than money. A person without relationships, no matter how much money they have, it's useless because there's no one to share it with, you can only enjoy it alone," Yifan answered.
"Thank you for your answer; it makes me feel reassured to have found a shoulder to lean on." Jiajia was comforted. As long as the person she loved was not materialistic, it didn't matter if the whole world was.
"All right! Don't be disheartened, I am here for you, I will rescue you from the cage of materialism," Yifan stated with conviction.
"Mm! I believe you can do it," Jiajia replied, filled with confidence.
A happy future awaited her; she could not be easily defeated.
"Then I'll take you back now," Yifan suggested.
