Chapter 126 "Deal" Struck
"Kid! You're still not giving up on 5 billion? People like you could never earn that much in a lifetime, yet you're asking me for a deadline? Ridiculous!" Zhou Jiajia's father scoffed, his face full of contempt.
"That's hard to say. Twenty days ago, I was a penniless worker, but now I'm a multimillionaire with assets of fifty million. So, anything is possible; tell me, what's the deadline?" Lin Yifan asked again.
He ignored the other party's sneer because this example was enough to prove everything.
Shocked by Lin Yifan's words, Zhou Jiajia's father began to see him as a potential stock with limitless possibilities. However, he had already made a promise to another powerful family, so he couldn't break his word; after pondering for a moment, he replied, "I'll give you nine months. If you can't earn 5 billion in nine months, don't blame us for not giving you a chance."
"OK! Nine months it is. I hope you won't break your word in these nine months; otherwise, when I lose my temper, even I don't know what I might do," Lin Yifan said with a sinister smile.
This was an intangible threat, letting the other party know he wasn't to be trifled with.
"If you have the ability to earn 5 billion in nine months, do you think I'd go back on my word?" Zhou Jiajia's father asked with a smile.
He was a shrewd businessman who knew how to weigh the situation; if there was such a huge potential stock, he wouldn't easily let it slip away.
Listening to this money-scented conversation, Lin Yifan truly felt sorry for Zhou Jiajia; however, the more people like that, the easier they are to deal with, so it isn't necessarily a bad thing; thus, he made a very sarcastic remark, "Dealing with businessmen is always so straightforward!"
As the person concerned, having such a father made Zhou Jiajia feel ashamed; what kind of father uses his own daughter as a bargaining chip? But some things can't be changed, and with such a father, she had to accept it.
At this moment, An Qi walked out of the house. She was attracted by the arguing; she had been applying makeup, then heard a commotion outside, including Zhou Jiajia's voice; curious and worried, she finished her makeup in a hurry, then ran out to see what had happened.
Now, seeing so many people here, including Zhou Jiajia's parents, she asked curiously, "Oh! What are you all doing here? Jiajia, why do you look so pale? What happened?"
Lin Yifan stepped forward to explain, "Ms. An, Secretary Zhou tripped accidentally; Mr. and Mrs. Zhou heard her and came out; they thought I had pushed her, so they blamed me for it."
Nobody wanted to publicize the matter, especially Zhou Jiajia's parents; then he was afraid Zhou Jiajia and the others couldn't find an excuse, so he took the initiative to stand out.
"Is that really what happened?" An Qi looked at Lin Yifan with a skeptical gaze, sensing something fishy.
"Don't believe me? You can ask them," Lin Yifan answered, appearing very generous.
"Uncle Zhou, Aunt Li, is that true?" An Qi asked.
"It's true," Zhou Jiajia's parents answered in unison.
So sure? Why does it sound somewhat fabricated? An Qi questioned inwardly, but since she hadn't witnessed the event herself, it was difficult for her to judge or challenge, so she asked instead, "Jiajia, where did you hurt yourself?"
At this point, Lin Yifan, Mr. Zhou, and Mrs. Zhou were all confused, obviously feeling that their lie was about to be exposed.
However, Zhou Jiajia's comment acted like a stroke of genius, sealing the hole in their lie completely, "I hurt my knee."
Everyone looked at her knee and indeed saw a bruise; Lin Yifan and the others breathed a sigh of relief.
The bruise was caused by Zhou Jiajia when she was begging her parents yesterday, and it had already scabbed over; but this morning, while rushing out of her room, she accidentally hit the doorframe, so the scab was scraped off, leading to the new mark.
Zhou Jiajia's response left An Qi with no grounds for questioning; but from the atmosphere at the scene and everyone's expressions, she felt that there was more to the story than Lin Yifan had let on. However, since nobody wanted to speak up, asking would be futile.
So she said, "Since it's a misunderstanding, then let's go to work."
"Alright," Zhou Jiajia agreed and got into the car with An Qi.
Lin Yifan also got into the car and drove away.
Waving goodbye through the car window, An Qi said, "Goodbye Uncle Zhou, Aunt Li, take care!"
"Goodbye, be careful on the road," Mrs. Zhou sent them off with a smile, not showing any traces of being the small-minded opportunist she was.
Watching the car fade into the distance, Mrs. Zhou's expression suddenly darkened, and she turned to berate Mr. Zhou beside her, "Lao Zhou, how could you agree to that deal?"
"Didn't we already plan the wedding with the Zhen Family in nine months? If he can present the same dowry in such a short time, why wouldn't we be pleased?" Mr. Zhou replied.
He had thought the situation through clearer than anyone, so why would he let himself suffer a loss?
"Do you think he can earn 5 billion in just nine months?" Mrs. Zhou asked.
"Anything is possible with effort. Remember, you also didn't think I could make a million within a year? And didn't I make it eventually? So, where there's a will, there's a way—never underestimate anyone," Mr. Zhou answered.
He had a hunch that this young man, Lin Yifan, might bring unexpected surprises. It was evident from his determined gaze; so now, he began to see Lin Yifan in a new light.
Compared to the spoiled heir of the Zhen Family, Lin Yifan's character seemed much better to him. If Lin Yifan truly had the capability to earn 5 billion in nine months, why would he push his precious daughter towards the ill-behaved scion of the Zhen Family? After all, he was also a father. He would not push his daughter into an abyss unless absolutely necessary.
If it weren't for Antian Group being on the brink of collapse, he would not be acting as mercenary as he was now, scrambling for a way out.
Today, their daughter was the only one who could bring a turning point to their future. That's why they were so protective over her marriage prospects.
On the other side, after arriving downtown, An Qi asked Lin Yifan to get off the car and buy some band-aids.
Taking advantage of Lin Yifan's absence, An Qi brought up the incident again, "Jiajia, was it that big bad wolf who tripped you just now?"
"No, I tripped by myself," Zhou Jiajia replied.
"You're lying to me. Jiajia, I'm your best friend; can't you tell me the real story?" An Qi felt let down.
