Chapter 717: Masters Gather Like Clouds
"Courtesy before force," Gao Fei said. "It's best not to resort to violence if it can be avoided."
"Alright, I'll listen to you!" He Hentian nodded.
"Someone's coming!" Gao Fei's eyebrows raised. "And there's quite a few of them! What's more, they're all experts!"
He Hentian looked up and sure enough, saw a group of monks arriving at the gate. These monks had a powerful aura and solemn expressions, and were all very strong.
A fat old monk, who closely resembled Maitreya Buddha, stepped forward, first chanting a Buddhist invocation, then he inquired: "Who are you at the bottom of the mountain and why have you surrounded the Myriad Buddhas Sect?"
Just as He Hentian was about to step forward to speak, he was stopped by Gao Fei: "Let me do it!" Gao Fei took a step forward and shouted loudly, "Who are you!"
"I am the abbot of the Myriad Buddhas Sect, with the dharma name Xuan Si," the old monk said unhurriedly.
"So you're the abbot," Gao Fei nodded. "Then you're qualified to talk to me!"
Abbot Xuan Si frowned slightly: "Who are you? What brings you to the Myriad Buddhas Sect?"
"You don't need to worry about who I am! You just need to answer my question," Gao Fei said. "Is Shangguan Yunyue being held by you?"
"Shangguan Yunyue?" Abbot Xuan Si was taken aback. "You've come for Shangguan Yunyue?"
Gao Fei nodded. "Indeed! I've come for Shangguan Yunyue! May I dare to ask Master Abbot, is Shangguan Yunyue really at the Myriad Buddhas Sect?"
"She is," Abbot Xuan Si didn't deny it. "Shangguan Yunyue stole something from the Myriad Buddhas Sect and refused to return it, so we had no choice but to capture her."
"You haven't mistreated Shangguan Yunyue, have you?" Gao Fei's expression darkened once he had confirmation.
"Rest assured, Shangguan Yunyue is still alive," Abbot Xuan Si said indifferently. "However... her current situation is somewhat grim, and I estimate she won't last much longer."
"What have you done to her!" Gao Fei became agitated upon hearing this. "I warn you, if you dare to harm Shangguan Yunyue, I will slaughter you and then raze the Myriad Buddhas Sect to the ground!"
"What arrogance," Xuan Wu, the seat holder of Damo Court, snorted coldly. "A mere cultivator at the Unity of Heaven and Man realm dares to be so insolent; it seems you've grown weary of living." Seeing Gao Fei's disrespect towards Abbot Xuan Si, Xuan Wu couldn't hold back any longer and cursed outright.
Gao Fei glared at Monk Xuan Wu: "And who might you be!"
"Listen closely, my name is Xuan Wu, and I am the seat holder of Damo Court," Monk Xuan Wu declared. "It was I who captured Shangguan Yunyue!"
"You captured her?" Gao Fei's eyes turned cold. "Good! I'll remember you!"
"Let me make this clear to you, Shangguan Yunyue stole something of great importance from the Myriad Buddhas Sect. If she hands it over, I might spare her life; if she refuses, she has only a path to death," he stated plainly.
"If anything untoward happens to Shangguan Yunyue, I will make sure all of you are buried with her," Gao Fei said, his face full of murderous intent. "Do not doubt my words! I mean what I say!"
"Such bluster," Monk Xuan Wu exhibited a disdainful look. "If you know what's good for you, you'll get lost quickly. Truly irritate me, and I'll slap you to death." In others' eyes, a million-strong army was powerful, but to Monk Xuan Wu, it was rubbish. Not to mention whether a million-strong army could break through the gate; even if they could, it wouldn't shake the foundation of the Myriad Buddhas Sect. The Sect had a long and profound legacy, and with just a few maneuvers, they could easily deal with a million-strong army.
At this moment, He Hentian walked over, head held high, hands on his hips, his expression cold as he said, "Do you know who we are? If we told you, it would scare you to death!"
"Oh my, scare us to death?" Monk Xuan Wu laughed out loud, a very loud laugh, "And what might your status be? Let's hear it!"
"Listen well! My name is He Hentian, the Crown Prince of the Human Territory! The future Emperor of Mankind!"
"Oh? You're the Crown Prince?" Monk Xuan Wu's face showed surprise, and even Abbot Xuan Si standing beside furrowed his brows.
He Hentian pointed at Gao Fei, "He is a Prince of the Blood!"
"Oh, a Prince of the Blood, huh," Monk Xuan Wu smacked his lips, "I didn't expect you two fellows to have some status." He had traveled around several times, so he knew what the titles of Crown Prince and Prince of the Blood represented.
"Even if you have powerful strength, you can't possibly make an enemy out of the entire officialdom, can you?" He Hentian snorted, "Today I can summon a million-strong army, tomorrow I can call upon ten million, and the day after a hundred million... I refuse to believe that the Myriad Buddhas Sect can withstand the fierce onslaught of a hundred million-strong army!"
"You try and see, see if we can withstand..." Monk Xuan Wu roared.
"Brother Xuan Wu, better hold your tongue," Abbot Xuan Si waved his hand, "The creed of the Myriad Buddhas Sect emphasizes harmony and avoiding disputes whenever possible, especially conflicts with governmental powers."
"But they..."
"That's enough, no more words; I have my own ideas on this matter."
"Oh." Seeing that the Abbot had become angry, Monk Xuan Wu did not dare to say more and obediently stepped aside. In the Myriad Buddhas Sect, Abbot Xuan Si commanded great respect, and except for a few old monks secluded in the back mountain, everyone else had to follow his directives.
Abbot Xuan Si spoke in a conciliatory tone, "What exactly do you want?"
"Release her!" Gao Fei shouted, "Let Shangguan Yunyue go!"
"Impossible!" Abbot Xuan Si decisively refused, "Shangguan Yunyue stole the most precious item of the Myriad Buddhas Sect. Until she hands it over, I will not let her go."
"Then... can I at least see her?" Gao Fei took a step back, "She and I are friends; I can persuade her to return the item to you."
"This..." Abbot Xuan Si hesitated.
"Abbot Xuan Si, can't you offer this much courtesy?" He Hentian interjected, "Do you really want to experience what it's like to have a hundred million-strong army attack a mountain?"
Abbot Xuan Si remained silent.
Just then, the Head Elder of the Elder Council, Xuan Ming, came over and whispered, "Abbot, I think this is an opportunity."
"Oh?" Abbot Xuan Si raised an eyebrow, "What opportunity?"
"An opportunity to pry open Shangguan Yunyue's mouth," said Monk Xuan Ming, "The man at the foot of the mountain claims to be Shangguan Yunyue's good friend. That he has come all this way to rescue her suggests their relationship is no trivial matter. Let him try to persuade Shangguan Yunyue; she might change her mind." Monk Xuan Ming was also at his wit's end, hence he suggested this, as Shangguan Yunyue was exceedingly stubborn. She was nearly tortured to death, yet still wouldn't tell the truth.
"Hmm," Abbot Xuan Si nodded, "You make some sense. All right, I will follow your advice and let them meet." Having made the decision, Abbot Xuan Si then addressed Gao Fei, "Very well, I will let you see Shangguan Yunyue, and I hope you can seriously persuade her. As long as she hands over the Shariputra, I will spare her life."
