Chapter 710: Not Just A Minor Dispute
"I didn't do it on purpose! I really didn't do it on purpose!" Dongguo Heixin said angrily, "I really regret it! If I had been more careful at the time, maybe this wouldn't have happened."
"As a doctor, you must be cautious when treating diseases, you absolutely cannot be the slightest bit negligent," Gao Fei said with a serious expression.
"Exactly," He Hentian nodded, "I very much agree with Gao Fei's view."
"I've already regretted it, and I know I was wrong, and, well... I've already paid a painful price..."
"What price did you pay?"
"My Divine Doctor Valley was destroyed, and I lost all my years of savings. I'm like a dog that has lost its home, fleeing for my life in the darkness. These days have been a nightmare for me! I've really had enough, I've truly had enough!!!" Dongguo Heixin became more and more agitated as he spoke, "Gao Fei, please help me, go and speak to Xiahou Wei on my behalf, ask him to stop making things difficult for me, will you?"
"Me, go and speak for you?" Gao Fei frowned, "I'm afraid I don't have that much influence." If it were a minor matter, Gao Fei could attempt to meet with Xiahou Wei, but now that Dongguo Heixin had killed his wife, a vengeance for murder was irreconcilable. Even if Gao Fei spoke for him, it was likely Xiahou Wei would not agree.
Put yourself in his shoes—if Gao Fei's wife had been killed by Dongguo Heixin, he would not let the matter rest either.
If it were a normal death, it would be one thing, but the key issue was with Dongguo Heixin—it was because of his momentary negligence that led to the death. Dongguo Heixin bore an inescapable responsibility.
Seeing Gao Fei's hesitant expression, Dongguo Heixin became anxious, "Gao Fei, I saved your life, remember? Without me, you would have died long ago! Now that I am in trouble, won't you help me? Can you bear to watch me die?" Dongguo Heixin shouted loudly, very emotional, "I am your lifesaver, you can't leave me to die, you can't be ungrateful!!!"
"Don't get worked up, calm down," Gao Fei said, "Rest assured, I will think of a way to help you."
"Really? You're not just placating me?"
"Absolutely not! Just be at ease; I will do everything in my power to help you!"
"At least you still have a conscience," Dongguo Heixin muttered. Gao Fei was his only lifeline—if Gao Fei turned a blind eye, then he really did not know what to do. Fortunately, Gao Fei had a conscience and knew to repay a favor. His promise to help gave Dongguo Heixin hope.
"You can stay in my residence for now, and when there's an outcome, I'll let you know."
"Find me a good room and get me a bucket of hot water; I want to take a bath. Oh, and get me a few sets of new clothes, and it would be best if you provide me with two maids to attend to my needs at night."
"I can't provide you with maids."
"Why not?"
"Because the maids in the house are not willing to accompany you, I cannot force them."
"You..."
"Go rest, get a good night's sleep, and we'll talk tomorrow."
"Fine, if you won't provide them, then you won't. I'll endure it! What else can I do now that I'm down on my luck?" Dongguo Heixin walked away, huffing.
Gao Fei watched Dongguo Heixin's departing figure, his gaze flickering, wondering what to think. The sudden appearance of Dongguo Heixin was a surprise to Gao Fei; he had not expected Dongguo Heixin would one day come to him for help.
"Do you really plan to help him?" He Hentian asked with a frown.
"I have no choice," Gao Fei sighed, "He once saved my life, I owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Now that he's in trouble, how can I just stand by and watch him die?"
"The problem is… the trouble he's brought upon himself is too big. Can you resolve it?"
"I'll try."
"Don't bother trying! I'm telling you, there's no way! Although I haven't had much contact with Xiahou Wei, I can tell that Xiahou Wei is a very stubborn and opinionated person. Once he's set on something, it's very hard to change his mind. Besides, this isn't just any ordinary conflict, it's about the murder of a wife. If it were us, we certainly wouldn't let it go either."
"I know," Gao Fei sighed softly. "I understand everything you're saying! I know it's very difficult to get Xiahou Wei to let Dongguo Heixin off, but what can I do? Ignore him? Would I still be human if I did that? No matter how difficult it is, I have to help him."
"And if Xiahou Wei doesn't agree? What do you plan to do? Fall out with Xiahou Wei?"
"That won't happen! I won't fall out with Xiahou Wei!"
"Then what do you intend to do?"
"If Xiahou Wei remains unrelenting, then I can only step back, send Dongguo Heixin away, find a safe place to settle him. No matter what, I have to protect Dongguo Heixin's safety. That's my bottom line."
"You're asking for trouble! If you really do that, do you think Xiahou Wei would let you off? I need to remind you of something—Xiahou Wei is very close to Liu Yifei."
"Oh?" Gao Fei raised an eyebrow: "Is the information reliable?"
"Of course it is reliable," He Hentian said. "Xiahou Wei and Liu Yifei are from the same hometown, and I've heard they are even somewhat related."
"If that's the case... things just got more difficult," Gao Fei frowned. He had originally planned to use his status as a prince to pressure Xiahou Wei, or if that didn't work, have He Hentian step in to suppress Xiahou Wei, as long as they didn't kill Dongguo Heixin, any other conditions were open for negotiation. But now it seemed that was not going to work; with Liu Yifei backing him, whom would Xiahou Wei fear? No one!
Things are really troublesome!
Sigh...
Repaying favors really isn't easy!
No matter what, Gao Fei had to try; if all else failed, he would think of another solution.
"About that, I need to trouble you with this matter..." Gao Fei hadn't finished speaking when He Hentian interrupted him.
"I don't have time for such trifles! Besides, I can't do anything about it, don't you see, even though I'm the Crown Prince, I'm merely a puppet. Xiahou Wei doesn't take me seriously at all. If I go to make a plea for you... it would only be humiliating myself," He Hentian pouted.
"If you don't want to help, forget it; I'll go find Xiahou Wei myself," Gao Fei said.
...
Several days passed in a flash.
There was still no news from Gao Fei, and Dongguo Heixin was getting anxious. And so, he stormed into the back courtyard's hall: "Gao Fei! How is the situation being handled?"
"I was just about to look for you," Gao Fei said with a wry smile, shaking his head. "I don't know how to say this..."
Dongguo Heixin's face darkened: "What? Isn't it going smoothly?"
Gao Fei nodded: "I personally met with Xiahou Wei, humbled myself to make a plea, and offered many promises, but Xiahou Wei's stance was firm; he refused to let you go and even threatened me not to interfere."
Dongguo Heixin's face twitched a few times: "And then?"
"Xiahou Wei is too stubborn, too quick-tempered; expecting him to let you off... it's impossible."
"But you're a prince, in terms of status and position, you're above Xiahou Wei! Can't you suppress him?"
"Xiahou Wei is a confidant of the Heavenly Emperor Liu Yifei, and their relationship is unshakable, so Xiahou Wei truly doesn't take me into account."
"Then... the Crown Prince? How about asking him to mediate..."
"The Crown Prince's situation is also difficult... If it were a minor dispute, the Crown Prince's face might still mean something, but this is a matter of avenging a wife's death; whoever it is can't just resolve it and be content," Gao Fei said with a bitter smile.
