Chapter 49 Not Coveting What People Love
"Mr. Luo, what type of jade ware do you usually carve?" Gao Fei asked.
"Jade," Luo Mingshan replied. "I mainly carve jade, though occasionally I also carve other types like white jade and Hotan jade."
Jade is a type of jade ware, also known as hard jade. Jade ware can primarily be divided into four categories: soft jade, hard jade, silicate jade, and other types of jade. Compared to other jades, jade has four main characteristics: a strong luster, high refractive index, high specific gravity, and high hardness. Among all jade stones, jade is considered the most valuable.
"There are some items in storage that I carved before. If you're interested, I can take you to see them," Luo Mingshan said.
Gao Fei and Shen Caidie, of course, had no objections.
After a satisfying meal, Luo Mingshan led Gao Fei and Shen Caidie to the storeroom, while Luo Zhongxing stayed behind to clean up the dining table. It was clear that Luo Zhongxing was a dutiful son, very filial towards Luo Mingshan.
The storeroom was in a corner of the workshop, not very large, just a dozen or so square meters. Inside there was a wooden rack displaying some exquisitely carved jade ware.
"Feel free to look around," Luo Mingshan said with a smile.
"This jade Guanyin is carved so beautifully..."
"This lion isn't bad either."
"And this Maitreya giving away wealth, it's incredibly lifelike."
"As expected of a master, the things you carve are truly extraordinary."
...
"Eh? What is this..." Gao Fei suddenly stopped as he was walking, his eyes intently fixed on a jade pendant, a hint of surprise on his face.
"This is an ancient jade," Luo Mingshan explained. "I bought it from a friend. There were some cracks on it that affected its beauty, so I specially worked on it to turn those cracks into decorative patterns. Now it looks much more beautiful. What, Mr. Gao, are you interested in this piece of ancient jade?"
"Ancient jade? Jade from ancient times?" Gao Fei asked.
Luo Mingshan nodded: "You could say that... Any jade that satisfies two conditions can be called ancient jade.
First, it's carved by ancient people, and second, it's been in existence for over a century." At this point, Luo Mingshan paused for a moment: "After careful examination, I determined that this piece of ancient jade is from the end of the Qing Dynasty, over a hundred years old, and is carved from fine white jade."
"Ancient jade... from the end of the Qing Dynasty... over a hundred years old..." Gao Fei muttered to himself. Why was he so interested in this jade pendant? Because he discovered an eerie fact: after activating his Clairvoyance eye, he could see that the jade pendant contained a breath, a breath full of spirituality.
When he placed his hand on the pendant, that breath rapidly entered through his palm and flowed into his Dantian along his arm. Afterwards, Gao Fei found his cultivation had improved.
What was happening?
Could he actually absorb the breath from the jade pendant? And could this breath help improve his cultivation?
This was too eerie, wasn't it?
"Mr. Gao, what's wrong?" Seeing Gao Fei standing there in a daze, Luo Mingshan asked with curiosity.
"Oh, it's nothing." Gao Fei came back to his senses, placing the jade pendant back in its original place. At this moment, he distinctively felt that the pendant had lost its spirituality and even its color was starting to dull; of course, these changes were not very obvious, at least Luo Mingshan and Shen Caidie did not notice the changes in the pendant: "Mr.
Luo, don't you have any other ancient jades here?"
"Other ancient jades?" Luo Mingshan was momentarily startled. "I did collect a few pieces in the past, but later on, I gave them all away..."
"I see." Gao Fei showed a hint of disappointment.
"It seems that Mr. Gao is quite interested in ancient jade," Luo Mingshan said with a smile. "In that case, I'll give this jade pendant to Mr. Gao." This jade pendant was an ancient jade, which if auctioned, could fetch at least a few million. Now Luo Mingshan was willing to give it away without so much as blinking an eye, which was very generous indeed.
"No, no, no, a gentleman does not take what others hold dear, I cannot accept this pendant," Gao Fei said hurriedly, waving his hand.
"An ancient jade isn't much to me," Luo Mingshan insisted on giving the jade pendant to Gao Fei: "Mr. Gao, I am someone who never goes back on my word once it's out, just like water that's been spilled. If you don't accept this jade pendant today, then I'll have to throw it away."
"...Alright, I'll accept it." Luo Mingshan had put it that way, what more could Gao Fei say? He couldn't really stand there and watch Luo Mingshan throw away the pendant.
The reason Luo Mingshan gave the jade pendant to Gao Fei was mainly to repay Gao Fei's life-saving grace. Of course, one jade pendant was not enough to repay the debt of saving his life; Luo Mingshan would look for other opportunities to show his gratitude to Gao Fei in the future.
Luo Mingshan's principle was: For a drop of kindness, reciprocate with a spring of gratitude!
The day's visit was hugely rewarding for Gao Fei, he had discovered a secret, a secret that could allow him to swiftly improve his cultivation: absorb the breath inside ancient jades. According to Gao Fei's speculation, as long as it was ancient jade, it would contain a breath, and by absorbing this breath, he could quickly enhance his cultivation.
Gao Fei decided that after leaving this place, he would visit the shops that sell ancient jade to see if all ancient jade contained an aura.
"Dad, something terrible has happened." The iron door to the storeroom was forcefully pushed open, and Luo Zhongli ran in with a panicked face, "The hospital just called and said... said... my mom is not going to make it..."
"What!" Luo Mingshan's face changed, "How could this happen! Let's go, to the hospital right now! Mr. Gao, Miss Shen, I am really sorry, my wife has had an accident, and I need to go to the hospital now. I can't entertain you two any longer..."
"This is an emergency, we can't delay." Gao Fei reached out to support the pale-faced Luo Mingshan, "Let's go, I will go to the hospital with you."
And so, Gao Fei, Shen Caidie, Luo Mingshan, and Luo Zhongxing drove to the hospital.
On the way, Luo Mingshan told Gao Fei and Shen Caidie about his wife's situation. Many years ago, she had been in a car accident and ended up in a vegetative state, living each day on nutritional drips. Luo Mingshan had never given up hope; whenever he had time, he would visit the hospital to talk to his wife, narrating past events by her side, hoping to wake her up, but he had never succeeded.
About half an hour later, they arrived at the hospital.
"Bang!"
Luo Mingshan barged through the door of the ward, "Lingxiu, Lingxiu, what's wrong with you..."
"Mr. Luo, please accept my condolences." A doctor in a white lab coat came over with a face full of sorrow, "Your wife, she... has passed away..."
"No... this can't be! Impossible!" Luo Mingshan shoved the doctor aside, then stumbled to the bedside, his hands trembling as he pulled back the white sheet, revealing a pale, emaciated face. "Lingxiu... don't scare me, Lingxiu..." Luo Mingshan embraced his wife's body and began to cry loudly. After more than a decade of hope, it had all ended this way, and Luo Mingshan truly couldn't bear it.
"Mom!" Luo Zhongli knelt by the bedside, crying out heartbreakingly, "Mom, don't leave me, don't abandon me, Mom..."
A wave of sorrow began to spread through the ward.
Shen Caidie's eyes also started to redden; she walked over and softly comforted Luo Mingshan.
"She's not dead yet!" Gao Fei suddenly said.
"Huh?" Luo Mingshan was stunned.
"What?" Luo Zhongli was dumbfounded.
"Mr. Gao, what did you say?" Shen Caidie was full of astonishment.
"Hey, don't talk nonsense here." The nearby doctor, unwilling to listen, said, "We've conducted a thorough examination and confirmed that the patient is dead, completely dead. Breathing stopped, heart stopped, pulse stopped... If this isn't death, then what is it?"
Gao Fei ignored the doctor, walked quickly to the bedside, and said to Luo Mingshan, whose face was streaked with tears, "Mr. Luo, if you trust me, let me try to save your wife. I am seventy percent certain that I can revive her."
"You... you're serious..." Luo Mingshan asked, his voice trembling, his heart originally ashened by grief, resigning himself to the cruel reality, only to be profoundly shaken by Gao Fei's sudden claim that he could save his wife.
Gao Fei nodded solemnly, "Yes."
"Then, please, go ahead..." Luo Mingshan hurriedly said.
"Mr. Luo, don't be swayed by this guy's nonsense. Your wife is dead, and even if God himself came down, he couldn't save her..." The doctor by the door said loudly, the claim by Gao Fei that he could revive the dead was a direct affront to his professional authority.
Luo Mingshan didn't even acknowledge the doctor, just looked at Gao Fei with hopeful eyes, "Mr. Gao, if you can bring my wife back, I will repay your kindness, even if it means working like an ox or a horse for you."
The doctor standing by the door was so angry he could feel his nose skewing. First ignored by Gao Fei, now disregarded by Luo Mingshan, it was too much, simply too much! He was an esteemed expert at this hospital, and patients' families always treated him with the utmost respect. He had never been subjected to such humiliation.
"Please, everyone, leave the room! I need a quiet environment to treat the patient," Gao Fei said in a deep voice.
"Okay, okay, we'll leave, we'll leave right away." Luo Mingshan quickly stood up, pulling his son Luo Zhongli and Shen Caidie toward the door.
"I'm not leaving! I can't let this man of unknown origins desecrate the body of the deceased!" the doctor said loudly.
"Zhongli, push him out!" Luo Mingshan ordered.
Luo Zhongli immediately went over and pushed the still-protesting doctor out of the ward. Luo Mingshan looked back at Gao Fei, "Mr. Gao, I am entrusting everything to you!" After saying this, Luo Mingshan hurriedly left the ward.
Shen Caidie, with a complex expression, glanced at Gao Fei, her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but upon seeing Gao Fei's serious demeanor, she swallowed back her words, turned, walked out of the ward, and closed the door behind her.
