Chapter 44 – The new regulars
It had been four days since the settlement had been attacked by monsters and everything was already back to normal. I was eating my breakfast when Helevyre, a fellow party member and our healer, sat next to me with her own breakfast while saying. ‘You ready for the dive today?’ She is a giant Firbolg who was easily a head taller than me even when we were both sitting down, was covered in a thin layer of dark blue, almost grey fur that she regularly brushed and simple light armour.
She was always worrying about everyone around her so I didn’t mind her checking on me, even if I would have considered that question to be rude if it had come from anyone else. The reason why she was particularly worried today was that the dungeon had recently created its 6
th floor and since we were the only party to take part in the successful raid that stayed here it fell to us to explore it as all the other parties had fucked off, having better things to do.Although, to be fair, if we hadn’t had a contract with the guild to help protect this settlement for a year we would have probably also left as there wasn’t much keeping us here. Unfortunately we needed the money and didn’t mind staying in one place for long, at least we were still able to take quests every now and then as long as we wouldn’t be gone for more than a week.
We were also allowed to dive into the dungeon once a day, although that would probably change when it managed to get enough instances that more adventurers would be inside it than outside it. It wasn’t part of the contract but since we were stuck here anyway we decided that we would be the vanguard in diving into the dungeon and since we found out a new floor had been created yesterday we were going to be challenging it first thing today.
‘Yeah I should be. Just let me finish my breakfast and I’ll check everything’ I said after I had finished my current mouthful of the bland porridge the guild house served here. I didn’t have much left as I was usually the first one up so I had had enough time to eat most of it before Hel had come to get her own breakfast.
A minute later and I had finished my meal so I went back into my room before going through my backpack to check everything was in it. After that I checked my Guandao, it was in pristine condition, the blade was as sharp as ever, the metal was polished so well I could see myself in its reflection and the wood was perfectly firm yet flexible.
Then I checked my armour, it was pretty plain as well but had extra metal plates embedded into it as I needed more protection and could carry a heavier load. I couldn’t see any chinks in the armour and all the stitches looked to be holding well so I put it on over my purple skin and undergarments, making sure to not get my curly, ram-like horns stuck on anything. With my physical checks done I looked through my status just for my own sake.
