60: Your Usual Place
“Well then, here we are. Welcome… or rather, welcome back, Uraku.”
“Excuse me… and there’s no way I’m saying ‘I’m home.'”
After finally getting off at our intended bus stop, we walked for a while and arrived at a mansion. It was such a historic-looking Western-style mansion that I couldn’t help but take a picture, wondering if such a place still existed these days.
Though it wasn’t that big, it was still too spacious for just the two of us. Besides, it seemed a bit out of place in the landscape that perfectly suited the term “Japanese countryside.”
There were no other houses around, so instead of standing out, it gave off an air of being completely out of place.
If I were suddenly thrown here, I’d probably think I’d come to another world. It was that strange of a place.
If Kamidama hadn’t opened the door and cutely beckoned me in, I would have probably stood there staring at the mansion for a while.
Of course, I didn’t recognize it at all—Kamidama said it was the place where we used to live together, so I thought I might remember something upon seeing it, but I felt a bit disappointed.
No, it’s not that I forgot anything in the first place… I think. However, if coming here makes me think of something, it would be related to my previous life, and if I were to describe it, it would indeed be “remembering.”
Therefore, I didn’t remember anything. Whether that was because there was nothing to remember, I couldn’t say.
If I had to point something out, it would be that the place was well-maintained despite not being constantly lived in. Sitting in a rocking chair placed separately from the sofa in the spacious living room, I looked around.
I think Kamidama mentioned that it was cleaned regularly. It’s quite a rich person’s story, like a vacation home.
Oh, but this isn’t Kamidama’s mansion, right? If I remember correctly—
“Tōtōura… was it?”
The name was written with the complicated kanji for ‘light’ and ‘bay,’ connected by the number ‘ten.’ After parting with my aunt, Kamidama told me about it, and I thought it was quite an unfamiliar surname.
Whether my thoughts showed on my face or I muttered the name quietly, Kamidama, who was sitting next to me as if it were the most natural thing, gently turned her face toward me.
“Yes, it’s the Tōtōura family’s vacation home. But now, it’s almost like my house… or rather, my vacation home.”
“Wow… that sounded like a rich person’s statement.”
“Hey, don’t make fun of me. I don’t like talking about it much either.”
“Okay, okay. But then, what does that mean? If we piece together the information, in our previous lives, we were living together in someone else’s vacation home…”
“It’s not someone else’s. Back then, it was genuinely our home.”
Kamidama said, after some twists and turns, it ended up this way. Well, even if I believed Kamidama’s words, it’s still about our past lives.
It’s hard to explain what happened to the house after we died, and I don’t know the details.
“So, the interior isn’t exactly the same as back then—though I’ve done my best to restore it.”
“That’s quite… obsessive, or should I say…”
“Hehe, sorry for being a heavy girl?”
“Well, an apology isn’t really necessary…”
It’s better than being shallow, I think. At least that’s how I feel. The more intense the feelings, the heavier they become.
Others can’t decide if that’s good or bad.
“Still, it’s a bit disheartening that I can’t react much to such an impressive place.”
“Hmm? Well, that’s not necessarily true.”
“What do you mean? As you can see, I’m just sitting here as usual.”
“Yes, as usual, you sat there.”
“…”
I was at a loss for words, digesting and savoring the meaning of her words.
Now that she mentioned it, why did I ignore the sofa and sit in this corner rocking chair?
It’s undeniably strange.
Why am I relaxing in someone else’s house as if it’s my own…!?
“Maybe it feels so familiar that you don’t notice anything special. Right, Uraku?”
“Wait, hold on. This is so spooky my legs are shaking.”
“Huh? Isn’t this a bit of a touching moment?”
“It’s more like a horror experience…”
Isn’t this a haunted house or something? Am I going to be possessed by a ghost?
Hearing my heartbeat quicken with fear, I let out a long sigh.
