Chapter 76: Destroying Gates
After Ella passed out, Silva took her out of the building a rushed ti the nearest hospital, Peter Drove. The rest of the situation was handled my Elena. The clean up, the arresting ajd the investigation into Noel's family, all of it was handled by her.
Peter and Silva sat inside the hospital, their, they're heads bowed. There was worry all over their faces as he looked at his sister lying on the bed.
Silva was worried. Despite the fact that the doctors had said she would be fine after running numerous tests on her, he was still worried that something bad could have happened to her.
He remembered how she looked while she fought him: her glowing eyes, the demonic aura around her body, the viciousness, everything that had happened in the warehouse. He recalled that when he looked at her, he didn't see his sister, but a rage-driven monster.
He regretted not being there to stop her, and regretted allowing her to fall in love with Noel. If he had only been more protective, and if he had only watched out more for the dangers, she wouldn't be in the situation she was in now.
The regret gnawed at his heart. He felt it like pangs of pain, thinking of how she could have died because of his mistake, and how the only person whom he loved would have left this world because of his mistake.
The more he thought of it, the more depressed he became. He covered his face with his palms, his body trembling in anger, while Peter walked up to him and placed his hand on his shoulder.
Silva looked up at Peter, and Peter gave him a soft smile and said, "It's not your fault, bro. There's nothing you could have done to avoid it."
But Silva looked at him with rage, anger at himself, and said, voice shaking, "But it was… it was my fault." His hands trembled. "If I had stopped her from going out with him, if I had protected her more, if I had looked out for her more, if I had been with her more, she wouldn't be in this state. I almost killed her.
She almost died because of what I did." He stood up, pointed at her on the bed. "If only I was there when she needed me, she wouldn't be like this. So don't tell me it's not my fault."
Peter kept his hand on his shoulder. He looked at him and said, "Eighteen years you've been alive, and sixteen you've spent with your sister. In those sixteen years, the only person she knows and trusts is you because you've been there when she needed you. Mistakes happen, and some are really dangerous, but she can't keep living in a bubble forever. You can't watch her like a hawk.
Yes, bad things happen, and this was one of the worst. But the good thing is she's alive, and that should be enough to make you grateful instead of regretting every single action."
Silva stared at Peter, the anger still burning in his eyes. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. He looked at Peter once more and said, "I just wish I could have stopped this from happening entirely."
Peter gave a soft smile. "Yeah. Me too. But at least she's alive. That's what matters."
A knock came at the door. It opened, and Elena walked in with Andrew and Lily.
She looked at Ella on the bed and then at Silva. She didn't say anything about his sister who was on the bed. She simply went straight to the point. "Noel's family have been arrested, every one of them, for being in coalition with the cult and carrying out human sacrifices.
After a search of their main house, multiple corpses were found and items tracing back to the cult." She explained that they would be tried and that she was truly sorry for everything he had been through.
Silva looked up at her, the fire still burning in his eyes. He clasped his hands together as he sat down on the chair.
"Those people hurt my sister. Those people hurt the only person who mattered the most to me. I don't care what it takes. I'll burn the cult down to the ground even if it costs me my life. I'll make sure they feel the pain they caused her.
I'll make sure that each and every one of them dies a gruesome death." His voice carried a certain intent behind it, they could tell he wasn't joking in the slightest. There was a faint purple glow in his eyes as he spoke.
Andrew stepped forward. "Let's not be rash," he said, adjusting his glasses. "If we begin to move based on emotion, the cult might get the better of us. We've seen that their actions are broader and bigger than we thought. We have to act wisely so we don't end up causing more harm than good."
Silva shot him a look, then said, "Then you guys better move fast. Tell me what needs to be done and I'll do it. But if you delay, I'll take matters into my own hands, and I might become worse than them, because I'll kill everyone I see."
Lily walked up to him and said, "Calm your horses down there." She tapped his shoulder and smiled. "We're going to get them," she said, then looked at Elena. "Can we start destroying gates it now?" she asked.
Elena gave her a stern look; Lily stuck out her tongue and let out a playful chuckle.
Elena looked at Silva. "We have to start from somewhere. Since the Awakened Council has given us permission, we have to start taking down gates, like Lily said.
The lower gates are out of limits for us S-rank and A-rank Awakened. But you, Silva, you are still registered as a D-rank, regardless of your current strength, which means you can enter without an issue. So you will be the one destroying all lower gates for us. It's a heavy ask, but—"
Silva cut her short. "Just tell me the gate and the time, and I'll make sure I do it."
He didn't care about the EXP gain. He didn't care that he could gain more EXP from higher gates, and he was willing to risk that to destroy lower-rank gates. All that mattered to him now was destroying the gates, finding the cultists, and killing every one of them for what they did to his sister.
Elena understood why he agreed so fast. She took a deep breath and looked at him.
"Fine. We will communicate the gates to you when it's time, but you have to be cautious. The cult is getting more active and their actions are becoming bolder. Also, you have to move fast.
It's only a matter of time before the Awakened Guild recognizes your strength and begins to question why you are still in lower-rank gates. Maybe two weeks tops, so we have to destroy as many gates as possible before their attention turns to you."
"I'll do just that," he said. "You just have to provide me the needed information." He repeated himself.
She nodded, looked at his sister one more time, and then walked to the door. She looked back at him. "We'll be in touch. Don't do anything rash." She left.
Andrew followed her, and then Lily walked to the door as well. She waved and said, "Bye," in a high-pitched tone before exiting.
Silva got up and moved to the window. Peter stood behind him. "Destroying gates? That's really risky, bro. Are you sure you're up for it?" he asked.
Silva turned to look at him. "If that's the way Ella will remain safe and far away from all of this, then sure. I'll risk my life to destroy any gate."
Peter tried to say something, but Silva cut him off. "I know what you want to say, it's dangerous, it's crazy, it's all sorts of things, but I'm not backing down. The only person I care about in the world is at risk of death."
Peter dropped his head and muttered something Silva couldn't hear.
[... ]
After a few hours of waiting, his sister finally woke up. She let out a small cough and her eyes opened. Silva rushed to her side, calling,
"Ella, are you alright? Ella"
She let out a sigh. "You keep calling me like that. I'm going back to sleep, bro," she said. He looked at her; she offered a smile that broke his heart and tore down his defenses. He hugged her on the bed and kept saying he was grateful she had made it out, that she hadn't died, then apologized.
"I'm so glad nothing happened to you, I'm sorry sis, i really am."
She looked at Peter while she hugged her brother. Peter, with a confused look, just smiled and shook his head, knowing that Silva had really been going through a lot emotionally since his sister was knocked out.
