Chapter 35: The Fallen Power That Renders Everything Meaningless
"Arrghhh—!!"
Avik let out a furious roar, raising his hands as a vortex of energy, deep and dark like a black hole, swirled into existence. In an instant, he hurled it toward Savorn. The gravitational pull of the energy destabilized our footing and began sucking in everything around us.
Before I could act, Savorn gritted her teeth and forced her ability into play.
"**[Cinderflame Divine Array]!**"
Savorn stomped the ground hard. The earth, already eroded by the rushing mudflow, split apart as crimson flames surged forth. The oncoming energy sphere was obliterated in a flash.
A massive wave of fire swept across the entire marshland, reducing the swampy terrain to cinders. Any vegetation within sight was scorched to ash.
Even the enormous vortex dissipated, leaving nothing but a vast expanse of charred land in its wake.
"What incredible power..."
"Hmph... Of course," Savorn replied with a smug expression.
"That was considerate of you, adjusting the flames so they wouldn't harm an ally."
"...Of course. Did you expect me to burn you alive?"
With that, Savorn raised her rapier, pointing it at Avik, who had been knocked down by the fiery onslaught.
"Experience the flames granted by the god of fire firsthand!"
Taking advantage of Avik's unsteady state, Savorn brandished her rapier, commanding the surrounding flames to launch an even fiercer assault.
As the flames engulfed Avik completely, Savorn held her breath, watching intently.
However, the figure writhing within the inferno became even more twisted. Dark energy erupted from his frail frame, coalescing into grotesque wings shaped like massive pincers. These wings replaced Avik's demonic right wing, exuding an even greater aura of oppression.
"This is my power—mine alone—and I will not... I will not allow anyone to interfere!!"
A transparent barrier rapidly expanded from Avik's center. Everything it touched lost its color, reduced to an eerie monochrome.
Even Savorn wasn't spared.
"**[Dichromatic Domain]—Submit to the dominion of the Fallen Power!!**"
In that moment, all meaning seemed to vanish.
Savorn froze mid-action, her rapier slipping from her loosened grip to the ground.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"Me...?" Savorn's confused gaze met mine, her eyes void of any light. She seemed completely devoid of will to fight. I scanned our surroundings—ground, sky, air, clothing, weapons. Everything, except myself, appeared to have lost "something."
Turning my gaze back to Avik, I saw him writhing in pain, struggling against the violent magic surging within him.
"Arrghhh—aaaghh!!"
I hoped he would stay incapacitated for a while.
Taking the opportunity, I decided to confirm something.
"Savorn, do you remember what this thing is called?"
I drew the peculiar sword hanging from my waist and asked her. Truth be told, I didn't understand why I felt compelled to ask.
It just felt... necessary.
"Are you talking to me? That thing... has a name? It's nothing... It's not anything... It doesn't exist... Uh..."
What a bewildering response.
"Do you remember your own name?"
"Huh? I don't have a name... Why would I need one? What even is a name?"
This situation was spiraling out of control.
"I'm changing the plan. I was going to let this drag out a little longer."
I approached Avik, who was still thrashing on the ground, overwhelmed by his own chaotic magic.
"I'll end your suffering now."
Killing Avik outright? Impossible. That wasn't necessary.
Neutralizing the chaotic magic within him would suffice.
Though this would strip him of his power, it was the only viable solution for now.
Once I gained better control over my ability, I could try restoring it later.
"Extinguish."
At my command, the dark energy radiating from Avik instantly dissipated.
Simultaneously, the eerie monochrome domain vanished.
"Ughhh—huh? What just...?"
"You're back to normal?"
Avik stood up, looking dazed. He flexed his hands experimentally and glanced around.
"Did I lose control?"
"What do you think?"
I glanced back at Savorn, relieved to see she had also returned to normal.
"Phew... I can finally think straight. What just happened...?"
She rubbed her head and walked over to Avik, fixing him with a sharp gaze.
"Tell us everything you're hiding, Avik."
Savorn's glare was razor-sharp. She knew Avik harbored many secrets, and she wasn't letting him off the hook.
I agreed. It was time for him to come clean.
