My Perfect Apocalyptic Life

Chapter 9 - Supervisor Lin, I'm Here to Talk!

“Gulp, gulp, gulp, gulp…”

After completing the task and chugging down a bottle of mineral water scavenged from downstairs, Meng Xu marked the situation on the tenth floor, placed the empty water bottle back into his backpack, and continued heading up to the eleventh floor.

The 11th and 12th floors were entirely occupied by ‘Wanxiang International.’ Compared to Meng Xu’s company, Jianglin Technology Co., which only occupied a third of one floor, ‘Wanxiang International’ was much larger in scale. Their main business was… outsourced customer service.

That’s right, customer service for various app software was provided by them.

For example, customer service for certain food delivery, ride-sharing apps, or home appliance services.

Those customer service agents weren’t employees of the app companies themselves but were outsourced to specialized customer service companies to save costs.

For most small companies, customer service only needed to say “Okay,” “Yes,” “Got it,” “We have noted it down.” Only when actual issues arose would they record them and, if numerous enough, report back to the app’s company.

Therefore, the eleventh and twelfth floors were crowded.

Additionally, according to Meng Xu’s knowledge, they operated on a rotation system. This meant that even at midnight, there would be unfortunate workers on duty, handling urgent matters.

Although the system seemed a bit unreliable and couldn’t accurately gauge the current situation, it did provide precise information that Supervisor Lin was on the eleventh floor.

“This could be challenging.”

Meng Xu took a deep breath, worried that the situation on the eleventh floor might be identical to the tenth floor. If that were the case, there was no point in proceeding; he might as well turn back.

As for the task?

He needed to stay alive to complete it.

After taking another deep breath, Meng Xu steadied himself and began ascending the stairs.

Pushing open the door to the emergency staircase, Meng Xu immediately saw a long trail of smeared blood extending all the way to the elevator lobby.

Although Meng Xu didn’t know what had happened, he used his smart little brain to roughly deduce that someone must have pressed the elevator button just as the zombie outbreak occurred, which caused some chaos.

The bits of flesh and blood on the ground suggested… they followed the elevator?

What kind of scenario was this?

After some thought, Meng Xu still couldn’t figure it out.

However…

It seemed pretty quiet?

The quieter it was, the more likely there was a problem!

Meng Xu, leading Chi Wei and Manager Zhang, continued moving forward. Soon, under the large ‘Wanxiang International’ logo, he saw two wandering, mindless zombies in the hallway to the left of the reception area.

【Zombie: Level 0.】

【Zombie: Level 0.】

On the right side, things looked rather messy. An office door stood wide open, and a quick glance inside showed it was empty.

“Phew~”

Meng Xu took a deep breath, crouched, and hid behind the reception desk. He tugged on the rope tied to Chi Wei and Manager Zhang, and the two zombies reluctantly changed their direction with his pull.

“Clatter.”

A crisp sound echoed as Manager Zhang accidentally bumped into something, causing a cascade of clattering noises. This immediately alerted the two zombies.

But upon seeing it was just Manager Zhang, one of the zombies sniffed menacingly, then resumed its slow, aimless wandering.

Seeing this, Meng Xu cautiously moved forward, thinking about how to take down both zombies.

The best strategy was one at a time.

He observed the wandering speed of the two zombies, controlling the current situation to the best of his ability. He aimed to use Chi Wei and Manager Zhang to block the path of the zombies, hoping to “stagger their shifts” and separate the two zombies with a “traffic control” approach.

The difficulty was, indeed, quite high.

However, for Meng Xu, failure was not a deterrent. He was willing to try again and again.

Finally, on the fourth attempt, he noticed the position of a middle-aged female zombie heading in his direction. Meng Xu quickly hid behind the reception desk, tugging on the rope to pull Manager Zhang back, creating a staggered shift that allowed the middle-aged female zombie to pass.

Once the female zombie had passed, Meng Xu quickly released Manager Zhang’s rope and used the two zombies to separate the middle-aged female zombie from the other younger zombie.

The smell of blood was strong, but Meng Xu did not rush to strike.

After all, the hallway was different from the stairwell. In the stairwell, the narrow space allowed him to pin the zombies and attack at will, but the hallway could accommodate 3-4 people side by side. Meng Xu needed a one-hit kill and then swiftly dealt with the second zombie.

This was why he chose the middle-aged female zombie.

Older and weaker, coupled with the naturally weaker strength of females compared to males.

These advantages gave Meng Xu a significant edge.

If things went south… he would have to let Chi Wei and Manager Zhang handle it and make a quick escape.

Holding his breath, Meng Xu abandoned all distracting thoughts.

He could hear his own heartbeat.

Gripping his improvised weapon tightly, he listened closely to the dragging footsteps approaching and the occasional inexplicable growl. Meng Xu’s eyes grew resolute, silently counting down the zombie’s approach.

Three,
Two,
One!

Counting down to three, Meng Xu suddenly tightened his grip on the weapon, leaping from behind the reception desk and thrusting towards the zombie’s head!

“Stab!”

The sound of the weapon piercing the flesh echoed, and in an instant, blood sprayed!

The sharp tip of the scissors stabbed straight into the middle-aged zombie’s neck. The zombie let out a howl, completely ignoring the blood gushing from its neck, and desperately reached out for Meng Xu.
But its arms were too short, failing to reach Meng Xu!

With a sudden burst of strength, Meng Xu shoved the zombie hard against the wall, pinning it there with his improvised weapon.

The noise was so loud that it alerted the energetic male zombie nearby.

Moreover, there was even some commotion coming from the meeting room at the end of the left hallway.

Thankfully, the door to the meeting room was closed.

Seeing the energetic male zombie approaching, Meng Xu glanced at the empty office with no hesitation. He quickly shoved the middle-aged female zombie into the office and slammed the door shut, trapping it inside.

Unless the middle-aged zombie learned to turn a doorknob, it wasn’t getting out.

With that done, Meng Xu didn’t waste any time. He grabbed his improvised tool and thrust it fiercely towards the male zombie’s head!

Fast, accurate, and ruthless!

Although his attribute points hadn’t increased much, the surge of adrenaline in the life-and-death moment made it impossible for Meng Xu to afford any mistakes!

The scissors stabbed into the zombie’s eye socket, bursting the eyeball, and causing blood to spray. Yet the zombie, oblivious to pain, lunged at Meng Xu, making him stumble back a few steps.

At this critical moment, Meng Xu suddenly realized that after three intense fights, the scissors attached to the mop handle were coming loose, and about to fall off.

Without a second thought, Meng Xu abandoned the mop handle, and the zombie, propelled by its momentum, staggered and fell.

Meng Xu seized the receptionist’s chair, kicking the zombie to the ground and stomping on its back. He then raised the metal chair and smashed it down on the zombie’s head!

Again and again, he swung the chair, smashing it heavily onto the zombie’s skull. The zombie struggled to get up but was firmly pinned down by Meng Xu, who relentlessly hammered away with the chair!

Blood splattered everywhere, and the scene was horrifying.

Meng Xu’s body was equally soaked with blood.

It wasn’t until the zombie’s head was reduced to a pulp and the “Zombie: Level 0″ label vanished that Meng Xu finally took a couple of deep breaths and stood up.

In the hallway, Chi Wei and Manager Zhang, stimulated by the intense smell of blood, were restless but hesitated to approach Meng Xu, showing a hint of… fear?

Under the watchful eyes of the two zombies, Meng Xu, covered in blood, straightened his back and flashed a brilliant smile. He called out to the rooms along the hallway, “Supervisor Lin, are you there? I’m Meng Xu from Jianglin Technology on the fourth floor. My boss wants me to discuss this morning’s parking space issue with you.”

“Weren’t we supposed to chat this afternoon? I’m here now, where are you?!”
